world history

Strange, you have contacted one of the most important contributors to the article History of the world of the English Wikipedia. I dramatically changed the structure 2 years ago. The former structure was similar to the Dutch article. I didn't like the period called Age of Kingdoms and decided to change most of the article. Now, two years later the article has changed somewhat and has lost some of the structure i gave it.

The sections on agriculture, city, trade, civilizations have been implemented by me. I had deleted the sections on paleolithic, mesolithic and neolithic, because i didn't think it was significant enough to mention such concepts.

My idea was to first mention the evolution of humans and the migration of humans out of Africa. Than, major developments, which changed human societies worldwide, independent from each other, like agriculture, city, trade, state, religion. I kept the section called rise of Europe, because Europe conquered the world. The original piece started in the year 1000, and i moved it to the 15th century with the start of the Portuguese and Spanish explorations. I kept a section on the 20th century, but added a section on westernization and globalization to discuss the impact of the European and American culture on the world and to describe the clash between different ideologies, like religions, national socialism, communism and liberalism. But this section has been deleted entirely.

At the moment i disagree with the format. It is the traditional format of the European culture, but has nothing to do with China, Arabia, India or the Americas. The Middle Ages don't belong to those regions.Daanschr (talk) 11:18, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

I like the structure that you want to give to the article. You try to direct people to themes related to world history, while my approach is to tell the world history. I must confess I trusted Erkan and did not look for your contributions. Good luck that I said the history of the world article was good. ;-) - I am very happy now! My idea is like yours, people should learn about China, Japan, India, Islamic culture, Africa, the Aborigines and the Americas. That shoud be done in a way that they are attracted to the special articles. So they might learn about Hindustan, Plymouth Colony, Edo period, Kush, Papua,‎ Papuan languages, Torres Strait Islanders, Australian megafauna, Edo, Kingdom of Kerma, Basil II, Battle of Manzikert‎, Sakoku, Tokugawa Shogunate, Tokugawa Ieyasu, Habitation at Port-Royal, Mi'kmaq, Fur Trade. Here is the article just before i started editing in 2005. This is after my last significant contribution. I quitted editing, because i didn't like the lack of interest of other editors in the contents of the article. structure editing and social interaction on Wikipedia

Cethegus, i have created two institutions in order to structure editing and social interaction on Wikipedia. Maybe you are interested in it. We could read books about world history as a part of either one of these institutions.

The easiest one of these are the reading groups on Wikiversity. The concept of this institution is very easy. We decide to read some books and discuss them. We could discuss them on a regular basis and we can edit articles on world history.

The other institution is more structured and of an academic level, WikiProject study before editing (on Wikipedia). The idea is to schedule a congress, which will start a year from now and which will last a month. Congress sounds like a word indicating a time consuming process, but it could be just two guys editing articles for a month whenever they feel like it. During the year we can acquire and read literature and other sources, which will be used during the congress. In the long run, this institution could work in a way that a couple of groups prepare which literature will be read and that people with less time will be able to join the congress a year from now, when there is a month of concentrated editing. It is comparable with a fair or with preparing for carnival.

Main reason for implementing these institutions is to try to create sustainable communities who can contribute on Wikipedia on an academic level, thereby improving the quality of the encyclopedia and other projects of the Wikimedia Foundation.Daanschr (talk) 08:05, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for showing your projects to me. They look nice. But I'm afraid I am not flewent enough in English to be able to chat or to contribute at a high level in English. As I have only an intermediate level I prefer to simplify to Simple English or to write in German. Furthermore I have the plan to write an article on World History in German since some years and I want to have a go on this now. (Having a lot of other activities I must try to avoid to be distracted from that aim.) Last but not least: never in my life I shall have read all relevant texts about world history. Therefore I have to try to write earlier and hope for corrections. - When I have finished my first version of that article I'll be happy to join one of your projects. --Cethegus (talk) 18:04, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

The idea of the project was to have it multilingual. The first time i tried to organize a congress, it was immediately for the english, german and dutch Wikipedias, because those are the three languages i speak. Of course, all relevant texts is a relative concept. It depends on the views, level of expertise, but also leisure time of participants. I have shown these projects to several people. Some day there could be someone who is enthusiastic enough to get things starting. The experience with the reading groups was good. Me and Erkan were a team who read and discussed texts for a couple of months every week, and we had 5-10 participants who joint occasionally. You are of course free to join or not to join.
