United Kingdom Planning Law

Hi, I've recently been expanding Town and country planning in the United Kingdom quite a bit and have started a subcategory called [Category:United Kingdom Planning Law]. I've really written up a bit of a skeleton for this area of planning. The planning acts, the new planning structure, PPS's, all those bloody new abbreviations LDF,LDD,RSS etc.etc. So far the majority of it are stubs and I was wondering if you might be interested in lending a hand in some way. Most of the articles so far are pretty dry statements of fact(I think) and could do with some context, structure/re-structure, debate, proof reading etc.etc. I'm a complete novice at Wikipedia and sure there's a heap of no-no's I've committed (Posting direct to talk pages?!?). Hi David- Is it incorrect procedure for me to link to the fr: article the way I did? Also:

• though I can see the link to the fr: article in the page code, it doesn't show up in the article;
• I don't see how the page to which the Category link points is helpful.

• fr link: Look on the left-hand side of the page. You'll see a box titled "In other languages" - in there, there's now a link called "Français" which links to the relevant page. This is the standard way to link a page to its counterparts in other languages. (Have a look at a page like Brussels and you'll see the same thing done for virtually every different major language wikipedia.)
• category: You mean the category Category:Hiking trails in Europe? I think this is the best category to include the page GR 11 (France) in. I don't think there's a more specific one that's better at the moment. Do you disagree? It's helpful because it allows people to easily locate articles on related hiking trails. --David Edgar 09:49, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

• fr link: I see now! Hadn't noticed that before--wasn't looking in the sidebar. So, simply typing [[fr:GR 11 (France)]] adds the "in other languages" box to the sidebar and populates it with "Français"? I thought only templates did tricks like that; I'll have to learn that stuff.
• category: Oops, of course the hiking trails link is helpful; I didn't have my brain on and only followed the link on the word "Category."

List of castles in France

I came acroos the List of castles in France page you created with interest. However, I'm disappointed to see that most of the places listed are not actually castles. As I'm sure you know, the French word château can be translated as "castle", but much more often "palace" or "stately home" would be better. Compare, in the UK, Kenilworth Castle and Blenheim Palace: to the French they are both châteaux, but to call both castles in English would be silly. The French also refer to just about every vineyard as a château whether on the site of a castle, a palace, a stately home or a 20C farm, which only adds to the confusion

On your page, I have identified the following which should not be described as castles:

When I "created" this page, actually all I did was to move the content out of the page List of castles which was getting much too long. (I created many other similar country-specific pages in the same way.) I didn't have a lot to do with which entries had previously been added to the list.

I certainly agree with you, there's a big distinction between castles and palaces; there isn't really yet a standard way to handle them in the context of these lists. For example, for Denmark there's a page List of castles and palaces in Denmark which includes both, but for England there's a list of Castles in England and a separate List of historic houses in England.

Places like Chenonceau and Versailles definitely merit inclusion in a list somewhere... so I would tend to suggest creating a new page for them, rather than simply removing them - List of palaces in France, perhaps? (It would be the list counterpart to the Category:Palaces in France. You might also check the existing French list within List of palaces.) Or maybe call them manor houses or stately homes if that makes it more inclusive?

As you indicate, there are a lot of the stately home / palace variety of châteaux... so probably separating the lists would make for better clarity than renaming the existing list to include both.

As for the glossary on the Dalgarven Mill page, it seemed inappropriate. For example, there's no need to explain what a cart or a maiden is - the words 'cart' and 'maiden' can be considered quite basic, and weren't even used in the text of the page. There's no problem explaining on a particular page a small number of terms relevant to the subject, but I don't feel it's helpful to add huge lists of terms. I believe that that page is using the wikipedia content without mentioning the source or licensing conditions.

When I first created the page, I didn't include the winner's table, and I used several phrases which have since been changed ('the United Kingdom' -> 'England', 'two nations', 'countries' -> 'teams') (see http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Admiral%27s_Cup&diff=201457697&oldid=19091235).

Since the Solar Navigator site content reflects the current content, I'd suggest that it was most likely that it was taken from the WP page. I'm fairly sure I wrote the text myself from a number of different sources (unfortunately I didn't note which, though).

Metronomy

I'm just wondering about some the edits you've made to this page. I think that the bold text you removed should be replaced as it makes that part of the article difficult to read. Also you have added a part about weasel words, would you like to find a source that refers to the Metronomy live show and light and dance routines? Some of the phrases definitely should not be in bold. For example album titles should always be in italics. (See WP:ALBUM.)

For other uses of bold, it's generally best to follow the Manual of Style. WP:MOSBOLD#Boldface says:

... Use boldface in the remainder of the article only for a few special uses:

• Table headers
• Definition lists (example: Proof)
• Volume numbers of journal articles, in some bibliographic formats

...

Take a look at some well-developed articles (eg. The Beatles), and you'll see this reflected. I think following this principle makes it nicer to read, and more like an encyclopedia than like some advertising blurb.

As far as the 'by whom' tag goes, that phrase seems a lot like some opinion from an unkown source. If it's 'charming' then I'd expect a reference from (for example) a professional reviewer stating that this was what they thought of it.

Alternatively, a phrase like, perhaps, "Metronomy live shows prominently feature dance routines and light shows." would be better. --David Edgar (talk) 15:35, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Castles in Belgium

It was agreed some time ago in relation to French castles - User:Emeraude can doubtless point you to the reference - that because the word château is wider in meaning than the English word "castle", it was decided to leave châteaux in their French-language form. There was no discussion at the time about Belgium, but it seems entirely logical that châteaux in Wallonia should also keep their French-language form. This was my thinking behind what I had started to do, if time had allowed, with List of castles in Belgium. (As it stands it is very flawed but nevertheless better than what was there before). I've no problem with châteaux being used instead of 'castle' where it's more appropriate. My issue with List of castles in Belgium is that it has a huge number of red links, even though many of the pages actually exist (and are listed in Category:Castles in Belgium) under different titles. Hi! You can't link to something like that which has just been posted on youtube, for copyright reasons. But that doesn't mean you can't reference a documentary - you can add a reference, naming the film (possibly adding a date, title of a DVD edition, quotation etc. if these make it clearer) to identify the source of a particular fact. (You can even use the cite video tag if you like, by writing something like this: <ref>{{cite video |title=Touching the Void}}</ref> )

However, you should also be careful with the reliability of sources; probably in this case it's reasonable to assume that the documentary attempts to be reasonably accurate, although of course it's largely based on the first person account in Joe Simpson's book. Ideally objective secondary sources are always best.

Hi - I'm sorry, I didn't reply to your earlier questions earlier.

• Regarding vandalism - in this case, it seems this anonymous user only made this one edit. So it might not be worth reporting it. What you might want to do is put a warning on the user's talk page (User talk:92.25.44.154 in this case) - for example Template:Uw-vandalism1. (You can find a full list of these template messages for user talk pages at WP:WARN.) If a particular user makes (or has already) more vandalism edits, you can add further more serious warnings to their talk page, and/or report the user at Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism, which will notify an administrator to take action.
• Red links - a name or other text in red simply means the article doesn't exist. Sometimes this does indeed mean an article would be useful; other times, the linked subject isn't really notable enough for an article of their own, in which case it can be appropriate to simply unlink the name. For people, they should satisfy the criteria listed at Wikipedia:Notability (people).
• In the particular case of Mal Duff, I think there's a good case for asserting notability. There are quite a few reliable secondary sources (eg. books, newspaper articles talking about him). Make sure to add these as references.
• Re hierarchy - you mean as in different categories of wikipedia editor? Wikipedia:User access levels lists the different user levels and what actions each can take; of these, the ones you'll mostly come across are either anonymous users, autoconfirmed users (basically regular logged in users) and administrators. Most things you'll want to do can either be done with standard editor rights, or can be done by an administrator (eg. page deletion, blocking users, normally in response to a particular request or deletion discussion). But it's not really a hierarchy - administrators don't have any real authority over other users, when it comes to editing articles; they simply have the ability to do certain additional things. I see what you've written on the talk page, but I disagree with you that 'history' is an accurate genre. Just because something is based on true events does not make it history.

He himself says his writing is fictional, for example in this interview: "The story line of my novel is largely fictional. The characters were invented and the plot imagined."

I don't doubt that some elements of his stories are autobiographical (as is the case with very many authors) but don't mistake that for an attempt to accurately narrate particular events in the past, which is what historical writing would do. --David Edgar (talk) 07:27, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

I have great doubts that the original 1999 date was when the strip was drawn. If you look at this version of the page, you'll see that both references to different xkcd comic strips are both dated with the same 1999-02-22 date, which looks suspiciously like some default chosen value. Additionally, I don't think Cory Doctorow had started blogging at that time, or at least wasn't well known. And they're certainly not done in the style of the earliest xkcd strips, suggesting both strips were made much closer to their publication dates.

So in the absence of any reference for these original dates specified, I replaced them with the publication dates. For the one you refer to, I found the version of the archive on waybackmachine.org where it was displayed on the xkcd front page and used the Friday immediately before. Incidentally this corresponds well to the date in the URL of the blag.xkcd.com reference. --David Edgar (talk) 11:58, 25 March 2011 (UTC)

Ian Curtis's house

I think I had gotten the right corner when I planned my little pre-Wikimania day trip from London—I just screwed up the address when I typed the filename Facepalm. It seems, based on this, that my picture is of the far corner rather than the one that was the actual house (yup ... this seems to support that. I think I even printed out the linked map and brought it along) It's hard to tell because the houses are only incidentally numbered. The right house may well be the one at left in this image. I knew at least I was in the right neighborhood.

Yeah, it seems like getting good light on it would be the issue (I would have been shooting too late to get any light on the house, and to boot sort of at right angles to the light. This is an excellent website (and mobile app) for calculating natural light availability (and what direction it comes from) at a particular location; I have set this up for 77 Barton St., Macclesfield, Cheshire. Wikipedia doesn't work on such a notion of "authority" as you suggest. Instead it works on consensus.

On the topic itself, my primary reasons for reverting were nothing to do with the languages of the sources. Instead, I felt that the reason for the section's inclusion was poorly explained, there was no explanation as to where this variation was used (or by whom), and the English was not good.
