Continuing development on the Wink Page

Hey Daylenca, I noticed you haven't done any edits or anything on Draft:Wink (platform). Is that still a project you are pursuing? You may have noticed that I have done some stuff. Let me know. Thanks! bojo1498 talk 15:42, 8 April 2015 (UTC)

Yes, I have been working on updating the LIFX article lately; however, I am still pursuing the article on Wink. Daylen (talk) 02:13, 9 April 2015 (UTC)

Problems with upload of File:Ring Logo.png

Thanks for uploading File:Ring Logo.png. You don't seem to have said where the image came from, who created it, or what the copyright status is. New Article: Ring (doorbell)

Hello Wikipedia users. I have been working on a new article about the smart doorbell Ring. I would love everyones help in making this article the best it can possibly be before making it public. Here is the link to the article. Thanks!

Hi there, I noticed the article draft and made a few changes. It's not complete at all. I'm new to wikipedia, but feel free to check it out. Perhaps we can finish filling it out and suggest to replace Ring_Video_Doorbell? --Rdwinters (talk) 01:47, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

July 2015

Hello, I'm General Ization. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. I noticed that you unlinked one or more redlinks from Smoke detector. Often redlinks can be helpful, so we don't remove them just because they are red. They help improve Wikipedia by attracting editors to create needed articles.

In addition, clicking on the "What links here" special link (in the Wikipedia Toolbox at left) on a missing article shows how many—and which—articles depend on that article being created. This can help prioritize article creation. Redlinks are useful! Please, only remove a redlink if you are pretty sure that it is to a non-notable topic and not likely ever to be created. Thanks! General Ization Talk 01:19, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

Hey General Ization!
I did not think about that. Thanks for the information, I have added that to my Wikipedia journal that I refer to when making edits.

Question

Hi! I was exploring Fiverr regarding some design services and stumbled on this, (a Fiverr account offering Wikipedia article writing services, I can't link the page because Wikipedia won't let me; here is a screenshot of the URL, http://screencast.com/t/Mmw5XZiRfB). Isn't this in violation of the Wikipedia terms? While looking through the page to attempt to find their Wikipedia user name I stumbled upon this http://screencast.com/t/7As0jec01nX (two of his latest works, Tuft & Needle and Lancaster Insurance Services). I found that Dewimani was the only editor on the Lancaster Insurance Services article so I suspect that they are the seller. Also, on their talk page, Inks.LWC noticed that the user stated "I am aware of the Wikipedia notability guidelines & have contributed many with other name.", that leads me to believe that they have multiple accounts which is a violation of Wikipedia's policy. As such, I believe that an administrator should look into blocking this users IP address. Can someone please help me submit a claim because I have no idea how.

Daylen (talk) 23:44, 24 July 2015 (UTC)

If you have evidence that they're improperly using multiple accounts then you should file an WP:SPI. It should be noted there are a few cases when multiple accounts can be used. In terms of paid writing, it's covered under our policy at WP:PAY. It's strongly discouraged, but until the issue is addressed further through complete prohibition, then they may have edited within the limits. Was anything you noticed expressly promotional? Mkdwtalk 03:29, 25 July 2015 (UTC)
My guess, after looking at a comparison of the three accounts and the screenshot that Daylen provided (which shows that Lancaster Insurance and Tuft & Needle are connected), it looks like it might be three people all working for the same "company". Unfortunately, I don't really have time to be of much more help right now, as I'm taking the bar exam in 4 days and only came here now because I was pinged; however, if the issue is not yet resolved by July 30, feel free to give me a reminder on my talk page, and I can look into it some more. Inks.LWC (talk) 07:21, 25 July 2015 (UTC)
I actually just realized something... I noticed in the Fiverr ad that it states, "If you want us to write for News about you. Contact us". Smileverse, one of the editors to Tuft & Needle (but not Lancaster Insurance Services) is the url removed editor-in-chief of Bangalorean.net (he posted his personal website information to his user page, so there are no outing issues with what I'm saying). In the past, Smileverse has created articles about subjects that he has written about on Bangalorean.net and used his articles as sources. I informed him that doing this was a conflict of interest. A lot of the articles he was linking to from Bangalorean.net were very promotional in there tone, and with that line about "write for News about you", I have a suspicion that he may be getting paid to write stories on Bangalorean.net so that he can use them as "news sources" to make articles here. I had had a suspicion that he might be a paid editor, just based on the articles he had written before and how promotional in nature they were, but now with this Fiverr post that shows that Dewimani, Smileverse, and Baligema might all be connected, that raises more suspicions. Just looking at the editor interactions, it is not apparent that Dewimani is connected, but quite a few articles that have been created by Smileverse and Dewimani have been deleted, so some common pages between them would no longer show up. I know that at one point, they both created an article on a businessman, William Benson (Smileverse created William Benson (businessman), and Dewimani created William benson(businessman)). So there seems to be some connection between the three, and there are certainly some conflict of interest problems, but the exact connection isn't 100% clear. As I said before, I don't really have the time right now to devote to this (I've already spent more time on it than I should have), but if it isn't resolved by next Thursday, I'll come back to this. Question

Why didn't you move the article Sound Recorder (Windows)? Mdrnpndr (talk) 20:17, 28 July 2015 (UTC)

I don't know how to move articles, can you please do it for me?
Daylen (talk) 23:28, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
Please don't. The application described at this article has been called Sound Recorder in every version of Windows through Windows 8.1. The free, downloadable app for Windows 10 called Voice Recorder is a different tool. General Ization Talk 00:16, 29 July 2015 (UTC)
Voice Recorder is preloaded on Windows 10 and replaces Sound Recorder. Would it be better to create a new page and put that Voice Recorder is Sound Recorder's replacement? I will leave the decision up to you. Daylen (talk) 16:28, 29 July 2015 (UTC)
Depending how extensive the differences are between the two tools (and whether enough is known about the Windows 10 tool) to justify a separate article, I would either create a new article; or create a subsection within the Sound Recorder (Windows) article to describe the new Voice Recorder tool, along with a redirect called Voice Recorder (Windows 10) -> Sound Recorder (Windows). (We cannot create a redirect at Voice recorder because it already redirects to Dictation machine, which is appropriate.) The title and lead of the existing article should continue to refer to Sound Recorder, because it is currently the much better known tool (and has a much larger installed base) and that is what most of the current article does and will primarily describe. General Ization Talk 16:42, 29 July 2015 (UTC)
(by talk page watcher) Hello, General Ization. Given the parameters of content similarity, similarity of nature and size rule, I don't believe splitting is justifiable. In fact, I have already covered Voice Recorder in the Sound Recorder article. This Voice Recorder app was included with Windows 8.1; back then it was called Sound Recorder. (Yup! Two Sound Recorders in one Windows!) Voice Recorder is now the only sound recorder in Windows 10. Best regards, Codename Lisa (talk) 17:54, 29 July 2015 (UTC)
Very good. Then you might consider my suggestion about a redirect, above. General Ization Talk 17:56, 29 July 2015 (UTC)

Copyright violation problem

Hello, Daylenca

How do you do?

After five month of being with us, your edit record seems very good. But that also means it is high time we discussed a very serious issue: Copyright. I hope the rather alarming title of my message has conveyed how important the issue is.

Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. So serious, that it has a very stringent policy called Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria (NFCC) which is deliberately more stringent than copyright laws. However, I see that you've disregarded this policy when you uploaded File:Voice Recorder.png and File:Voice Recorder Tile.png, committing serious copyright violations. In fact, you have knowingly claimed that these two images are in public domain. Microsoft software screenshots are non-free; they must be uploaded locally (not on Commons), have a use rationale and have an appropriate license tag.

Please be sure to study the policies to which I've linked and take extra precautions not to violate them.

By the way, the appropriate license tag for Microsoft screenshots is {{Non-free Microsoft screenshot}}. The appropriate tag for their computer icons is {{Non-free computer icon}}.

Best regards,
Codename Lisa (talk) 06:48, 29 July 2015 (UTC)

Hi Codename Lisa, When I uploaded those photos I used the Groove Music tile as reference https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Microsoft_Groove_logo.png. Also, I was uploading them locally but Wikipedia recommended that I upload to the Commons, so I did. So, for the next month or so I will not be uploading images to Wikipedia until I have read through all the guidelines or got approval that I am using the right copyright tags via my talk page. All the information you have given me I have added to my Wikipedia notebook which I have with me everytime I make edits to Wikipedia. Daylen (talk) 16:28, 29 July 2015 (UTC)
Hello again.
Much appreciated. If you had any questions, I'll help whenever I am around.
The groove logo is a slanted "G" and a dot. It does not meet United States threshold of originality requirement. Plus, letters, font renderings and even calligraphy are not copyright-protected in US. (I myself uploaded the logo of Xbox Video to Commons because it consisted of a simple rounded triangle and the public domain triangular sign for play.) But the images that we are discussing are too complex; even if they consisted of simple shapes, layout alone is copyright-protected.
The offer to upload to Commons occurs when there is a notion of "free image" implied. However, "free" here means "free content", not free-of-charge content. In other words, a free image is one that you are allowed to freely view, copy, redistribute, use (even commercially) and derive from,

Image upload

Hey Codename Lisa, I just wanted to make sure that the following image: http://blog.thoughtstuff.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Skype-for-Business-2.png should use the copyright tag {{Non-free Microsoft screenshot}} and be uploaded locally to Wikipedia.

Daylen (talk) 00:05, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

Hi. :) The image looks good enough. But please make sure you include the page on which you found it in the sources. This direct link alone won't do. For example, it should look like:

Downloaded from {{URL|http://www.example.com}} ([http://www.example.com/image/image_name.ext Direct link])

It would be rendered as:

Downloaded from

www.example.com

(Direct link)

Orphaned non-free image File:PhotoMath Logo.png

Thanks for uploading File:PhotoMath Logo.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 17:33, 4 October 2015 (UTC)

Hello
There is a way to keep the image but I need to know exactly from where you got the image. You have provided photomath.net as a source, which is too generic. All I can see there is this: https://photomath.net/i/PhotoMath-head.png. A link to the page where the image can be seen or downloaded is required.
Best regards,
Codename Lisa (talk) 20:29, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
Hi Codename Lisa, thanks for coming to the rescue! I got the image from https://photomath.net/presskit/PhotoMath/logos/PhotoMath-app-icon-with-title.png. Daylen (talk) 23:11, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
As I feared, you ignored this sentence: A link to the page where the image can be seen or downloaded is required. You provided a direct link to the image instead. Believe me, WP:CSD#F4 is a matter of life and dead!
But you are incredibly lucky: I inferred the link that I needed; it is https://photomath.net/presskit/.
Rescue operation is underway.

WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 5

Newsletter • October 2015

Hello there! Happy to be writing this newsletter once more. This month:

We did it!

In July, we launched five pilot WikiProjects: WikiProjects Cannabis, Evolutionary Biology, Ghana, Hampshire, and Women's Health. We also use the new design, named "WPX UI," on WikiProject Women in Technology, Women in Red, WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health. We are currently looking for projects for the next round of testing. If you are interested, please sign up on the Pilots page.

Shortly after our launch we presented at Wikimania 2015. Our slides are on Wikimedia Commons.

Then after all that work, we went through the process of figuring out whether we accomplished our goal. We reached out to participants on the redesigned WikiProjects, and we asked them to complete a survey. (If you filled out your survey—thank you!) While there are still some issues with the WikiProject tools and the new design, there appears to be general satisfaction (at least among those who responded). The results of the survey and more are documented in our grant report filed with the Wikimedia Foundation.

The work continues!

There is more work that needs to be done, so we have applied for a renewal of our grant. Comments on the proposal are welcome. We would like to improve what we have already started on the English Wikipedia and to also expand to Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. Why those? Because they are multilingual projects and because there needs to be better coordination across Wikimedia projects. More details are available in the renewal proposal.

How can the Wikimedia Foundation support WikiProjects?

The Wikimedia Developer Summit will be held in San Francisco in January 2016. The recently established Community Tech team at the Wikimedia Foundation is interested in investigating what technical support they can provide for WikiProjects, i.e., support beyond just templates and bots. I have plenty of opinions myself, but I want to hear what you think. The session is being planned on Phabricator, the Wikimedia bug tracker. If you are not familiar with Phabricator, you can log in with your Wikipedia username and password through the "Login or Register: MediaWiki" button on the login page. Your feedback can help make editing Wikipedia a better experience.

Until next time,

Possibly unfree File:Ecobee logo.png

A file that you uploaded or altered, File:Ecobee logo.png, has been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree files because its copyright status is unclear or disputed. If the file's copyright status cannot be verified, it may be deleted. You may find more information on the file description page. You are welcome to add comments to its entry at the discussion if you object to the listing for any reason. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 12:25, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

File source problem with File:Ecobee logo.png

Thank you for uploading File:Ecobee logo.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 12:31, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

Non-free rationale for File:Ecobee logo.png

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Ecobee logo.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 12:31, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
