Links etc edit

Hallo, I've just come across a couple of articles you've edited. Could I point out a few tips for editing?

  • The first section of an article shouldn't have a heading like "description", it just comes as the first,or "lead" section, and appears above the table of contents.
  • To get the article name in bold in the first line, use bold formatting '''like this''' rather than making it into a link back to the article
  • There's no point in making a link from the abbreviation for the article subject - it usually goes to a disambiguation page, no use at all to the reader.
  • When you're adding things to disambiguation pages, remember to read the editing notes for dab pages - there should not be any extra blue links in the entry, just the one for the article being disambiguated
  • In the text of an article, don't link to any article more than once from any one section of an article (eg if "Uganda" or "commercial bank" comes up several times in a section, link the first one only)
  • Don't link words like "Act" which aren't going to help the reader understand more about your subject.
  • There's no point in having a disambiguation page no-one is going to find, like SLAU (disambiguation). Instead, I've put a "hatnote" on the article at Slau and one at the university article, so anyone who types Slau or SLAU will get offered both articles. The dab page isn't really needed.

I hope that's useful for your future editing! Welcome to Wikipedia - I see you've been here a while but no-one's done the full welcome so I'll do it now. PamD (talk) 22:47, 5 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

PamD,

Thank you for the corrections and suggestions.Fsmatovu (talk) 23:09, 5 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Another little thing: if you're adding a contribution to a talk page, give it a new section heading - either by typing it ==Like this== or by clicking on the "new section" or "+" tab at the top of the page. It just makes it easier for people to find their way around talk pages, as these headings get picked up in the table of contents of the talk page. Best wishes, PamD (talk) 23:13, 5 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
And what I should have made clearer in that last remark: if you're continuing a discussion, precede your comment by ":" to indent it one level, "::" for two levels, etc - or "*" for a bullet point, "**" for an indented bullet, etc - then the conversation stays together and is easier to read. Best wishes, PamD (talk) 06:50, 7 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Welcome edit

Hi! Great to see we have somebody from Uganda on here and keen on improving our coverage of Uganda on here. Thanks for your contributions!Glad to have you on board! Ideally we need several hundred people like you from every country in Africa working towards improving the rather poor coverage of this part of the world on here! I've started a few stubs on politicians from your Cabinet of Uganda, if you could expand them this would be great. Regards. Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:37, 21 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

I see! Well in the UK we do have a Dr. Hilary Jones so...! Glad to have you on board with the Uganda wiki project. If you ever want to talk about something give me a bell. I noticed that you started a few articles on hydroelectric plants. If I have time I will expand one of them into a Wikipedia:DYK cool? Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:08, 22 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

African banks edit

Hi I doubt you know but I have created economcy templates for the African countries at Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/Economy templates. If you could also add banks in your lists to the relative templates this would be great. Keep up the good work. I've done Template:Economy of Mauritania as an example. P.S ignore the annoying deletion warnings, you're doing great. Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:54, 5 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

  The Ugandan Award
For your excellent work on Ugandan towns and economic related articles. You are undoubtedly one of the most valuable wikipedians on here in terms of addressing uneven bias and improving coverage of a country like Uganda which otherwise would remain ignorantly basic in terms of coverage on here. We need several hundred editors like you working onother countries in Africa, I hope over time more people will get online in Africa... Your work is more appreciated than you might think... Keep up the great work! May we soon have a decent starter articles on all the places in Uganda! Himalayan 22:19, 12 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Translation of a short story edit

Hi! So, you speak Luganda. I hope, you could help me. I'm a Hungarain wikipedian, my name is Norbert Kiss. I wrote a really short story and now I have 121 translations about it, but only two are from the real Africa. Could you make me a Luganda version? The English version is here:

Myself edit

Ancient are my people to whom I belong, we are ancient ones, on this whole world. I speak an ancient language, the language of my own. I live in an ancient land, I’ve never lived elsewhere, and I belong here. This is me, myself. I am alone in the big world. I am alone, my nation passed away a long time ago, only I stayed. I speak my ancient language alone.

I am wandering on the road called life, I eat my bread and I drink my water alone. It is me who writes my books and I am the one who reads them. I climb the mountains behind my house; me I get the fish from the river which is in front of my house. Every day I go up to the hills to think and to meditate alone, only me on my own. While I was away, I have seen other people; some of them came to my land. I was good to them. I gave them food and drink, they could rest in my houses.

And now... strangers tell me, when they come here, what I should do, what I’m allowed to do. But here I am the landlord, I am the owner, I am the one who is at home. This is my ancient home, where my fathers and their fathers lived. This is my home, my land; I live here on my own.

I hope, you could help me. --Eino81 (talk) 10:03, 30 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Districts edit

HI, good to see you are still doing well. I was wondering if you could copy and paste the infobox in Wakiso District and add one to all of the other districts and add the relevant details. I think we can replace the old red maps to with the ones in the example given, they look of a higher quality. Himalayan 23:21, 14 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I've decided to draw up some templates by district at Wikipedia:WikiProject Uganda/District templates. See Template:Kalangala District. The idea will be to eventually have a detailed guide by each district connecting all articles within it on counties/towns and villages, notable landmarks geo features. economy companies, schools, notable people etc. If you like the ide and format please let me know. Specifically are ther elikely to be articles on counties/sub counties and parishes and villages emerging or what? Please let me know if you ar ehappy with the columns or suggest something I can do to improve them and I will create all the templates for you ready to fill if so given that much of your work is geared to improving content by district anyway... If you understand how the templates work, then you can add whatever content to them you think notable by district.. Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:52, 6 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Judging by the administrative structure in Uganda it seems I have constructed a fairly good basic template for you to build upon. I've started Template:Luwero District as an example added a few landmarks. Basically just cram in as many notable articles blue or red linked to each one as possible. If you are happy with the idea I'll create all the templates tomorrow empty ready for filling. I'm certian it would also help organize things for you. We also need to be listing the missing county/sub-county and parish articles at least and at somedate all of the villages... Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:47, 6 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Please communicate thanks. Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:29, 10 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Well admittedly I get quite frustrated when governments keep changing their districts all the time. It messes everything up from an encyclopedia point of view and means having to redraw everything. The idea is that you add all of the missing counties and sub counties/parishes to the templates by district and any towns or villages which you think should have an article and any topic you think should have an article. If you'd like me to go ahead and create empty templates ready for filling let me know but gradually I want these templates brought into the mainspace at the foot of articles... You are now a Reviewer edit

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 01:47, 17 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Page titles edit

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you recently tried to give NIC Bank Uganda a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into NC Bank Uganda. This is known as a "cut and paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is needed for attribution and various other purposes. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. Thank you. Categorisation edit

Hi. You're doing great work on African academia, can I just make two comments? One is that although each country is free to use whatever format for category names they want, it helps other people guess category names if they conform to some kind of standard format. In the case of your "X University academics" categories you should be aware that the usual forms are either "X University faculty" for US/Australian academics or "Academics of X University" for British articles.
I'd also ask you to categorise any new categories you make - there's no point having a category if people can't find it! Plus it makes more work for people like me who sweep up any categories that aren't categorised... Also since we don't know the subject so well we may make mistakes in the categorisation. The academics categories may also need "X University people" and "X University" categories creating - I know it's extra work but they will be needed in the long term and it will encourage people to further develop the hierarchy with eg alumni etc. You can copy the categories I've set up in eg Category:Busoga University, Category:Busoga University people and Category:Busoga University academics. Anyway, keep up the good work! Le Deluge (talk) 12:22, 25 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Pakuba Airfield / Kabalega Falls Airport edit

Hi Fsmatovu,

in different places you have suggested that "Pakuba Airfield" and "Kabalega Falls Airport" appear to be the same entity. I have established that this is indeed the case. Many online resources (such as Google Maps, Wikimapia, and others) mistakenly call the airstrip next to Pakuba "Kabalega Falls Airport". However, there is no airport with this name. Instead, the one next to Pakuba is denoted Pakuba Airfield. The second airstrip within Murchison Falls National Park is named Bugungu Airstrip. Unfortunately, many resources call this one "Pakuba Airport". This doesn't make sense, as this second one is on the southern bank of the Nile and not at all near to Pakuba village. I have made the necessary corrections on Pakuba Airport and List of airports in Uganda. My question for you is now this: Could you cast some light on the name "Kabalega Falls Airport"? Is there an airport with this name anywhere in Uganda? Or where else does this false information come from?

Jomibe (talk) 14:41, 16 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jomibe, thank you for the work that you are doing. Give me some time to make further inquires. I will report back when I get relevant information. Thanks. Fsmatovu (talk)
Hi Jomibe, I have looked around and the only plausible explanation goes back to when dictator Idi Amin ruled Uganda (1971 - 1979). He and Mobutu Sese Seko in neighboring Zaire enacted reforms that attempted to Africanize some of the landmarks in both countries. Lake Edward was briefly named "Lake Mobutu" and Lake George (Uganda) was briefly named "Lake Amin". Murchison Falls was named "Kabalega Falls". Murchison Falls National Park was renamed "Kabalega Falls National Park" and Pakuba Airport became Kabalega Falls Airport, being the airport that serves the national park. Although these changes may have been made in good faith, they were done haphazardly, by dictators with little International credibility and were reversed as soon as the two rulers were deposed. The temporary changes in names were not recognized outside the two countries. Fsmatovu (talk) 18:51, 6 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hi Fsmatovu, wow! Thank you for your extensive research. I think the explanation you provide is very plausible. I had already found out that Murchison Falls National Park was at some point called "Kabalega Falls National Park". So this is in line with your explanation. Thanks again! Greetings Fsmatovu. I would like to make major edits to Kenya Commercial Bank Group and its subsidiaries. Would that be okay? Zotezangu (talk) 19:30, May 28, 2015 (EAT)

Hi Zotezangu. You are more than welcome to edit the KCB pages. You know you do not need my permission. KCB has gone the Equity route and formed a holding company. My only disappointment with both of them is the lack of financial statements for the subsidiaries. It is always a challenge finding the subsidiaries' total assets, shareholders' assets and profits. But have a go at it. Good luck. Fsmatovu (talk) 16:56, 28 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hi Fsmatovu. Thank you. You have done a great deal creating those pages and it is only fair to notify you before making drastic changes. I guess with the group structure, both KCB and Equity will be able to offer segment reports. Thanks again. Zotezangu (talk) 22:51, May 28, 2015 (EAT)

Africa Finance Corporation edit

Hi Fsmatovu – I see that you recently created Africa Finance Corporation. I have drafted some additional content on this organisation, namely sections on its history and some of the major financing deals that have taken place. What I've done is merged our two drafts in my user space (see here). That draft now has an expanded introduction summarising what's in this larger article, then the sections covering history and financing, and then your sections covering shareholders, management and credit rating. I've added a couple of other names to the shareholders as there are some others listed in ref 33 (including Sanjeev Gupta, who according to ref 34 is actually a shareholder rather than part of the senior management team). I have a COI here in that I work for Bell Pottinger, a PR agency in London, and AFC is my client – see my user page for more info. Would you have time to take a look at this expanded draft and see whether you'd be happy to transfer it across to the main article space? The references are all sound and the tone is neutral. I will also be able to get hold of a logo and release it under a free licence for use in the infobox. Many thanks. HOgilvy (talk) 16:39, 13 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Also, you should add |country=UGA to the infobox so that it can properly display the links at the bottom to the appropriate Ugandan articles. Imzadi 1979  01:51, 20 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Contests edit

User:Dr. Blofeld has created Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/Contests. The idea is to run a series of contests/editathons focusing on each region of Africa. He has spoken to Wikimedia about it and $1000-1500 is possible for prize money. As someone who has previously expressed interest in African topics, would you be interested in contributing to one or assisting draw up core article/missing article lists? He says he's thinking of North Africa for an inaugural one in October. Coordinator edit

Hi, as I know you're an experienced editor here with Uganda topics I was wondering if you could help. The Africa contest proposal doesn't exactly have WM gushing with support. They think we need a coordinator for this in Africa to run an effective contest. I was wondering if you could offer to help me coordinate the contests and comment there? I know Uganda is your specialty but the same principle would be applied to all areas of Africa. I'd be willing to do much of the work but need a few people from within Africa on board with me.♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:47, 23 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thanks for that. If you could post at here and state that you're an African wikipedian with much experience and that you'd be willing to help coordinate the contests this would be great. I would do most of the work drawing up the framework, but I might need some help drawing up some of the core article lists and identifying what is most important. Cheers.♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:16, 24 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge edit

Hello. I've revamped the contest page into this, based on the new British model. Long term goal, but I've added entries since the beginning of July to give it some initial life. I hope it proves productive long term. The contests are still planned, but will be more tools towards increasing bulk output in overall goal. It's a permanent goal now, and open! I would be grateful if you could keep a record of all your articles you do there, as I really think seeing the combined efforts will encourage others to create more content too! Please spread the word to the others, cheers!♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:23, 2 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi, the Destubathon is definitely going ahead and will be held from October 15th to November 27th. Even if no prizes are offered haha. It's been badly needed for a very long time I think.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:00, 4 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Invite to the African Destubathon edit

Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most geography, wildlife and women articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing, whether it's a river in Malawi, a Nigerian footballer, or a South African civil rights activist, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. For those of you who signed up to the North African contest, that will hopefully be held in the new year. Thanks. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:11, 6 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

You don't seem to email much haha, but we've got the full grants we need for the contest now anyway, so let's hope it goes well from the 15th!♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:10, 13 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I think it might be best to keep contest entries in a separate list accumulating on the main page of the contest for six weeks and treat that as the challenge entry for this duration. I thought it might be best to add the entries to the list once done and everybody is clear on that and then we can see all of the entries specifically done for the contest too. I think the best thing would be to keep all the entries for the Destubathon for six weeks, compile a big list of all entries improved from tomorrow to 27th of November, and then tip the big list into the challenge oneat the end (like I did with the UK one from the Dragon contest). Those editors who opt out though we won't include their articles. Obviously if you do any of work in the meantime which can't count for the contest that can count towards the challenge. That OK? I will create a new list at the bottom of the main contest page, and then we can resume directly with the challenge at the end of November.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:55, 14 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Africa Finance Corporation – some updates edit

Hi Fsmatovu, I hope you're well. We worked together in April on Africa Finance Corporation, which you had started. There have been a few more developments since including a number of new projects, an energy joint venture with Harith General Partners, and its credit rating being reaffirmed by Moody's for the second year running. I've updated my userspace draft with updates along these lines – these are marked up in blue with some strikethroughs where necessary. Note that one of these is that Jibril Aku is no longer on the board. I've also included a list of current projects – I've included secondary sources for most of these but some are only listed on the AFC website. If you're happy with these proposed changes, on the talk page of the same draft is a clean version without the mark ups. Let me know what you think. As I mentioned last time, I have a COI in that AFC is my client. Best regards. HOgilvy (talk) 21:24, 14 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Tool to use edit

importScript('User:Dr_pda/prosesize.js'); // User:Dr pda/prosesize

Instructions:

  1. Go into your preferences
  2. Where it says "Shared CSS/JavaScript for all skins:", click "custom javascript
  3. Paste the command given above into that and save.
  4. Now approach an article and look in the tools section on the left. You should see "Page size". Click that for each article and you'll quickly get a reading on readable prose without having to paste text all of the time and look externally.♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:03, 15 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

On the contest vs challenge you mentioned, see the bottom of Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon now, that'll function as the challenge-type list for the next six weeks, though if you do any work which can't count for the contest that of course can go on the challenge page. If you could add the destubbing entries you do for the contest and add your articles you do yourself to that list, aside from the entries page I would be grateful as it will save me time gathering up the entries if I know you've taken care of adding your own! At the end of the six weeks we'll add that list to the Challenge page, but respect those who want to opt out of having their entries count towards that.♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:58, 15 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

You can add new articles on anything to the main list on the Destubathon page, as long as they're not stubs. But obviously can't count on the entries page!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:18, 19 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your work to date on some important topics :-)♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:34, 19 October 2016 (UTC) Quality start class articles like Isinya–Singida High Voltage Power Line also welcome on main list of Destubathon but not worth contest credits. Only thing not accepted is stubs!♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:03, 19 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Need help with an article edit

I want to create the page; Political organization of the Ashanti Empire . My only question is that can I use sources from SHS text books such as [this one] ?. The book link I just sent contains footnotes or references to history books on the Ashanti Empire such as famous works by Davidson Basile and Shillington. My main question is that will it be okay if my sources are approved SHS text books? Kwesi Yema (talk) 14:16, 15 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Introducing myself edit

Hello Fsmatovu,

Nice to e-meet you. As you will see from my personal page, I am the Executive Assistant to the CEO at Lekela, a renewable power generation company operating in Africa. I’ve been appointed the in-house Wikipedian in residence to help ensure that information about Lekela is factual, fair, and balanced, in line with Wikipedia standards and guidelines.

I have noticed that you appear to be interested in Africa and renewable energy and that you have edited/created the Taiba N'Diaye Wind Power Station page (a project of Lekela’s).

With that in mind, I wondered whether it would be possible to work with you to help improve the Taiba N'Diaye Wind Power Station page, specifically?

Best, Jas

Bio style edit

In referring to people in an article, please use their last name, unless they are a popular entertainer or similar figure. For example, in Mary Wangari Wamae, the individual should be referred to as Wamae, not Mary--and, when possible, it's better to use "she" instead of repeating the name it all. If you use the first name alone, it doesn't look professional. (its also a gooddidea to try to avoid one-sentence paragraphs.) I'll check in a few days to check that you made the changes, and you might look at some of you other bios also. DGG ( talk ) 05:55, 5 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Lekela Power edit

Hi there,

My name is Maddy, and I work for Headland Consultancy. We are a UK PR firm that represents a number of clients, including Lekela Power.

I’m getting in touch with you today because I can see that you have contributed quite a bit to Lekela’s Wikipedia presence, having created and edited much of the article linked above.

I was wondering if you would be interested in making a further edit to Lekela’s page, as the information on its wind farms is not fully up to date. Lekela has recently opened a new wind farm, Perdekraal East, in South Africa. It has a capacity of 112.6MW.

I hope that you will consider contributing this information to Lekela’s page. Do let me know if you have any questions or require any further information on the above.

Thanks,

Proposed deletion of Chandesi edit

The article Chandesi has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The town is not notable, doesn't use proper citations & has a dispute about the actual name of the town, which online search results have failed to verify adequately.

Speedy deletion nomination of UNRA (disambiguation) edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on UNRA (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.
