Wikipedia and copyright edit

Hello JamesMatthews01, and welcome to Wikipedia. Your additions to Patrick Kingsley (journalist) have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are PD or compatibly licensed) it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions, the help desk or the Teahouse before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps in Wikipedia:Translation#How to translate. See also Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 15:56, 17 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

I also found violations in the following articles:

Thanks for the note. Some of these articles were some of my earliest attempts at writing. Point noted and we've discussed the background on your talk page. The sloppiness won't persist. JamesMatthews01 (talk) 11:48, 20 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Michael Scherer (Journalist) edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Michael Scherer (Journalist) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. FunkyCanute (talk) 18:27, 19 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

I've since responded on the Talk page. Incompleteness was because Wikipedia saved the original edition when my browser unexpectedly refreshed. JamesMatthews01 (talk) 11:46, 20 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

A page you started (Michael D. Shear) has been reviewed! edit

Thanks for creating Michael D. Shear.

I have just reviewed the page, as a part of our page curation process and note that:

Hi! I've reviewed this article. There are a few claims which require a citation, please ensure these are added (especially the Pulitzer one as that is where the key claim of notability sits). Many thanks!

To reply, leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|StraussInTheHouse}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ .

Message delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.

@StraussInTheHouse: Shear authored article that starts “Kaine orders independent investigation” in Pulitzer Prize winners announcement page (https://www.pulitzer.org/winners/staff-66). JamesMatthews01 (talk) 21:24, 4 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
JamesMatthews01, apologies, I couldn't discern who the main contributor was due to revdel so I defaulted to the article creator. SITH (talk) 10:08, 5 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

A page you started (Damian Paletta) has been reviewed! edit

Thanks for creating Damian Paletta.

I have just reviewed the page, as a part of our page curation process and note that:

Thank you for your new article on Damian Paletta. Note that other editors have questioned whether he is notable enough for his own article. This matter must be addressed or future editors could call for the article to be deleted.

To reply, leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Doomsdayer520}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ .

Message delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.

ArbCom 2019 election voter message edit

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:24, 19 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Ways to improve Alayna Treene edit

Hello, JamesMatthews01,

Thank you for creating Alayna Treene.

I have tagged the page as having some issues to fix, as a part of our page curation process and note that:

Thank you for your new article on Alayna Treene. More evidence is needed of her notability, which in turn requires reliable sources in which her work has been noticed by others. (As opposed to simply using her own works as sources.) For pointers, follow the blue links in the notice at the top of the article.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Doomsdayer520}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~. For broader editing help, please visit the Teahouse.

Delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.

---DOOMSDAYER520 (Talk|Contribs) 22:48, 1 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Doomsdayer520: Thanks for the note. Have made changes: link from additional sources (Politico Playbook, Fox News appearance), ensuring page is no longer orphaned by linking to some of her work covering coronavirus (and will continue this). JamesMatthews01 (talk) 02:37, 17 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
