Please reconsider your AfD opinion of the Deputy Director for Blood Policy and Programs, US DHHS

This position is a result of 10 years of very hard work by the blood and plasma users (cancer patients and others) groups. I've edited it so it doesn't appear as a resume for Mr. Henry. If other editing needs to happen, I'm happy to work on it. Many thanks MS 00:49, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Welcome

Welcome from me too. I noticed you fixed my "pony plub"! I hope you take the time to give yourself a user page soon, with a brief mention of where you live (I'm guessing it's Oz) and as much as you like in the way of quick links and ToDo lists. Enjoy your time here anyway! Robin Patterson 15:09, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Thanks! I've slapped together a nice simple user page, I never know what to write about myself in these things! Lankiveil 07:16, Sep 4, 2004 (UTC)

The Gap, Queensland

Thank you for leaving me to fix all of the links so that the pages would link to The Gap, Queensland instead of to The Gap, Brisbane, Queensland when you moved the article. I have just completed this task.

As the mover of the page, it was your responsibility to fix the links to the new title.

The reason why the title was given as 'The Gap, Brisbane, Queensland', was to distinguish the Brisbane suburb from the Mount Isa location which is also called 'The Gap', and which has been designated by the title of 'The Gap, Mount Isa, Queensland'. Did you even bother to check why 'The Gap' had the name 'Brisbane' in the title, or did you consider this to be too much an effort on your part to embark upon, or too much of a waste of your time.

Because of all the work involved in having to change the links from the pages which link with 'The Gap, Queensland', for the Brisbane suburb page, the article will continue to keep that title. Another reason is because the title is now uniform in keeping with other suburbs of Brisbane.

A final word. Next time you 'move' pages to a new title, please fix up all relevant links, instead of leaving the task for other people to do. Figaro 14:19 October 5, 2005 (UTC)

Your response does not answer my comment that it was your responsibility to have changed the links from going to "The Gap, Brisbane, Queensland", so that they would go to "The Gap, Queensland". In your response, you chose to completely ignore the fact that it was your responsibility to do this. Any time that I have moved a page, I have always all the links to the page so that they would go to the new page. Figaro 09:12 October 6, 2005 (UTC)

When you move a page, the instruction is given to check links to make sure that they link properly to the new title. For instance, when you click on the word 'check', you are given a list of pages which link to the old title, so that you can change the links on those pages for the links to properly access the new title. Did you choose to ignore the instruction? Furthermore, it is vital to make sure that there are no double redirects, and Wikipedia makes it explicit that these should be dealt with. When you move a page, do you even bother to check about double redirects?

As far as blanking the discussion page is concerned, none of the messages that I have ever received have been deleted - not even yours - and all messages that have been written to me are still publicly accessible. I discovered that Wikipedian talk pages are accessible at other non-Wikipedian websites, and the move was because I did not want non-Wikipedians being able to read my messages. If you want to check out my messages, all you need to do is to click on the link to 'personal pages' at the bottom of my user page. This will take you to an index page for three further pages - one of which is called 'personal notes', where messages I have received are available to be read. Figaro 11:57 October 6, 2005 (UTC)

CorbinSimpson's Request for Adminship

Thanks for voting in my request for administrator rights, even though it failed (13/30/4). Sadly, work has forced me to respond to you all using a substituted message rather than a personalized response. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that administrators, to me, should be chosen and approved by the community, and I will continue working to become a better editor and Wikipedian. No matter what the alignment of your vote was, I will take your comments seriously and use them to improve myself. If you wish to discuss your comments personally with me, I would be more than glad to talk about things since the RfA is now over; just leave your concern on my talk page and we will sort things out. Thanks again for voting, and happy editing! - Corbin Be excellent

Location Maps

On the WikiProject Countries talk page, you had either explictly declared a general interest in the project, or had participated at a discussion that appears related to Location Maps for European countries.
New maps had been created by David Liuzzo, and are available for the countries of the European continent, and for countries of the European Union exist in two versions. From November 16, 2006 till January 31, 2007, a poll had tried to find a consensus for usage of 'old' or of which and where 'new' version maps. At its closing, 25 people had spoken in favor of either of the two presented usages of new versions but neither version had reached a consensus (12 and 13), and 18 had preferred old maps.
As this outcome cannot justify reverting of new maps that had become used for some countries, seconds before February 5, 2007 a survey started that will be closed at February 20, 2007 23:59:59. It should establish whether the new style maps may be applied as soon as some might become available for countries outside the European continent (or such to depend on future discussions), and also which new version should be applied for which countries.
Please note that since January 1, 2007 all new maps became updated by David Liuzzo (including a world locator, enlarged cut-out for small countries) and as of February 4, 2007 the restricted licence that had jeopardized their availability on Wikimedia Commons, became more free. The subsections on the talk page that had shown David Liuzzo's original maps, now show his most recent design.
Please read the discussion (also in other sections α, β, γ, δ, ε, ζ, η, θ) and in particular the arguments offered by the forementioned poll, while realizing some comments to have been made prior to updating the maps, and all prior to modifying the licences, before carefully reading the presentation of the currently open survey. You are invited to only then finally make up your mind and vote for only one option.
There mustnot be 'oppose' votes; if none of the options would be appreciated, you could vote for the option you might with some effort find least difficult to live with - rather like elections only allowing to vote for one of several candidates. Obviously, you are most welcome to leave a brief argumentation with your vote. Kind regards. — SomeHuman 7 Feb2007 20:21 (UTC)

Ye Art Cordially Invited to the Annex

Hello, My good Fellow, listen and I shalt telleth Ye a Tale of a Wiki that well comes All Manner of Articles relating to Fiction. What is This wonderful Place of Fantasy, You ask? It is the Annex, Haven to All fiction-related Refugee Articles from Wikipedia.

Before nominating or proposing a fiction-related Article for Deletion, It is My sincerest Hope that Ye import It to the Annex. Why do This, You wonder? Individuals have dedicated an enormous Amount of Time to writing These Articles, and ’twould be a Pity for the Information to Vanish unto the Oblivion where only Administrators could see Them.

Here is a Step-by-Step Process of how to Bringeth Articles into the Annex:

  1. Ye shall need at least three Browser Tabs or Windows open. For the first Tab or Window, go to Special:Export. For the second, go here. (If Ye have not an Account at Wikia, then create One.) Do whatever Ye want for the third.
  2. Next, open the Program known as Notepad. If Ye haveth It not, then open WordPad. Go to “Save as,” and for “Encoding,” select either “Unicode” or “UTF-8.” For “Save as type,” select “All Files.” For “File name,” input “export.xml” and save It. Leave the Window open.
  3. Next, go to the Special:Export Window at Wikipedia, and un-check the two small Boxes near the “Export” Button. Input the Name of the Wikipedia Article which Ye wish to import to the Annex into the large Field, and click “Export.”
  4. Right-click on the Page full of Code which appears, and clicketh on “View Source” or “View Page Source” or any Option with similar Wording. A new Notepad Window called “index[1]” or Something similar should appear. Press Ctrl+A to highlight All the Text then Ctrl+C to copy It. Close yon “index[1]” Window, and go to the Notepad “export.xml” Window. Press Ctrl+V to pasteth the Text There, and then save It by pressing Ctrl+S.
  5. Now go to the Special:Import Window over at the Annex. Clicketh on “Browse…” and select the “export.xml” File. At last, click on “Upload file,” and Thou art done, My Friend! However, if It says 100 Revisions be imported, Ye be not quite finished just yet. Go back to Wikipedia’s Special:Export, and leave only the “Include only the current revision, not the full history” Box checked. Export That, copy the Page Source, close the “index[1]” Window, and go to the “export.xml” Window. Press Ctrl+A to highlight the Code all ready There, press “backspace” to erase It, and press Ctrl+V to pasteth the new Code There. Press Ctrl+S to save It, then upload once more to the Annex. Paste {{Wikipedia|{{PAGENAME}}}} at the Bottom of the imported Article at the Annex, and Ye art now finally done! Keepeth the “export.xml” File for future Use.

Thank Ye for using the Annex, My Friend — the Annex Hath Spoken 01:42, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

Heh, if you get 18 GAs I'll nominate you for...adminship (<insert joke there>). I just looked at Toronto's bid and I agree that ours won't beat it at the moment. That said, I see no reason not to put the bid in just for the heck of it (unless that's frowned upon) if you're OK to do all the stuff the person leading the bid does (I saw some mention of interviews or something). Brisbane Suburb Box

Hi Lankiveil, I think you created the suburb box for Brisbane suburbs, which I think is a damned good idea. I'm happy to start putting it in other suburbs' entries, but I don't seem to be able to get rid of the top line that says "suburbs NEAR SANDGATE" - how do I get it to refer to the suburb the box relates to ? ANZ

Hi. I was looking over the Australian bank articles, and saw that you said in ANZ that it is the largest bank in Australia. Where did you get this information? Their own website simply says "ANZ is one of the largest companies in Australia and New Zealand". I always thought National, Westpac or Commonwealth would be the largest bank in Australia. ANZ doesn't have a huge presence here. - Mark 09:14, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I thought that it was common knowledge that ANZ are the biggest. I did some research though, and it appears that NAB is the biggest bank in Australia, although the Commonwealth are fast catching up. NAB has next to no presence hereabouts though (southeast Queensland), so I guess it's subjective.
Nevertheless, I'll fix up the error.

Deletion of Chastity, Truth and Kinopanorama

On your Wiki profile you claim that you are pro-Australian.

I beg to differ. If that were so you would not have voted for the deletion of Chastity, Truth and Kinopanorama, as you did.

You failed to note the special importance of the film, including the fact that it was the first Kinopanorama film shot in the former USSR by a foreign company -- in this case an AUSTRALIAN company.

Secondly, the fact that the film was exhibited commercially and 1997, and is presently being restored for a 10th anniversary screening at the Hollywood Cinerama Dome in mid-2007, alone warrents inclusion.

What I will find really useful is to see what other people change on the article, because that will give me a good idea of where I'm getting it wrong. And so I'll be able to change what I'm doing to suit.

Re: Archiving of "Troll Bait"

Just a comment on your archiving of the "Troll Bait". While you, I, and the person accused all know that the original comment was nothing but a bad-faith accusation by an editor bitter that their particular POV was not being allowed to be pushed, I disagree with "archiving" the whole affair. Surely, it's better to air such accusations and look at them in an impartial light, rather than doing what may be construed as "sweeping them under the rug". Personally, I'm quite willing to accept the reasoning that it was a stupid mistake made by a very young editor, but should we not at least be open about such things?

Respectfully,

Lankiveil 05:38, 8 November 2006 (UTC).

There is a difficult balance to be struck here. On the one hand, we want to create an environment where people can feel confident airing concerns about even the most respected contributors, and where such concerns can be discussed openly without censorship or fear of reprisals. On the other hand, it is important that trolls who deliberately set out to harm other editors not be fed.
Blowing the whistle on someone certainly doesn't make you a troll, but she was already a troll before she blew the whistle on Longhair. This is a long-term nuisance editor who was banned by the ArbCom, and was violating her ban in order to publicly post the results of her trawling through Longhair's contributions looking for dirt.
In this situation, bearing in mind the spirit in which the accusation was made, and Longhair's adequate response to it, I was of the opinion that the best course was to archive the discussion. But such an action must always be subject to there being no objections. If you wish, I will restore the discussion.
Hesperian 06:00, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

I am not sure if it was the same user but see Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Gundagai editors and associated pages. If she is the same user she is not young (claiming to be 55 and having 2 uni degrees and working on a 3rd and she is no novice to wikipedia either having edited here since May. If she is not the same user her very few edits are very surprising and otherwise seemingly inexplicable in their targets. Regards Golden Wattle talk 09:39, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your response, sorry about the confusion. I never think of Longhair as that young but perhaps I am doing him a disservice and of course he was a new user once. The edit was two years ago, early in his wikipedia career, he has admitted it was not a good idea and he has since learned a lot. Gretaw's edits (Gretaw (talk · contribs))are somewhat surprising, definitely on the attack to discredit people involved in the arbcom case. Her postings about Sarah Ewart on the Gundagai page reference another article were difficult and I certainly read her post about Longhair in that light. Longhair has a very great number of edits and she would have had to search for a long time to find something to discredit him. I can't believe it was random chance. Why go back that far in the history of the article, why raise it at AWNB rather than the article page or with the user, and why were the previous comments made by Gretaw concerning another admin made on the Gundagai page but in fact related to a minor edits about Point Nepean, Victoria. [2] I have no issue with the post being there, it is so patently bad faith, but I don't hold with scolding someone for edits made two years ago when he has obviously moved on and so have we all. The edit history is there and we are all accountable for all our edits, but comment by the community to such a provactive post should be made in the light of elapsed time and contribution history. I am waiting my turn! Those of us who have signed in are accountable and we are well aware that the software supports history facilitating the transparency.--Golden Wattle talk 00:02, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

She basically wrote humorously against tampering with reality in Wikipedia, which led me to take note of her and find she was sufficiently notable for an article of her own. Regards. Notice Concerning an AfD on 123 Pleasant Street

I am providing this notice because you recently (Closed January 1, 2007) provided an opinion concerning keep/delete or other comments relating to the AfD for the article 123 Pleasant Street. This AfD had an announced result of a consensus to "Keep." A User or Users dissatisfied with this outcome have intitated a process other than the public AfD to overturn this result. The article is presently once again listed on a AfD discussion. To assure that your original comments and opinions are considered you should immediately again expression them in the Current AfD

I am providing this notice after consulting with the Admin closing the AfD. Edivorce 14:51, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

election campaign article precedents

Re: your comment at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/2006 Victorian election campaign, you mentioned that there are precendents for election campaign articles. Could you please point me towards some, it was my impression that there weren't any from a quick search. Grumpyyoungman01 03:52, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

Effects of global warming on Australia page completely rewritten - 40 references

Effects of global warming on Australia page completely rewritten - 40 references The article now has over 40 referenced statements and is based largely on a report prepared by Australia's premier scientific research organisation the CSIRO. The referencing of the article now compares very favourably with most other articles I have looked at. The article has no POV. The report on which it is based was prepared for the Business Round Table. It ought not be deleted now, even if it should have been before. Could each person who has recommended deletion please review and reconsider your view. Thanks dinghy 07:05, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Mathomats and getting old

If you're getting old, I'd be surprised. I'm only two years younger than you and I remember Mathomats quite well. Perhaps it was a difference in schools (I went to a private high school, where we used it). BigHaz - Schreit mich an 21:31, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

qld counties

Hi, I noticed that you started the articles in Category:Queensland counties. I am trying to find info about counties currently in Queensland for Cadastral divisions of Australia. Did these articles you started refer to the "old" 109 counties of Queensland mentioned at [3], or to the 322 counties it says are presently there? --Astrokey44 08:53, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

thanks for your reply, this is interesting.. perhaps the 322 new counties never really 'caught on'. If they were only subdivisions, not changes in the borders than I guess you could use either system. It is difficult to find much about them on the internet, except for nineteenth century information. --Astrokey44 11:22, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
me neither :/ oh well.. maybe some other time. Thanks for trying though --Astrokey44 12:51, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
I found it! a map showing the new counties.. it appears that some of the old counties remained such as Ward, Canning and Stanley, while most of the subdividing took place in the north and west --Astrokey44 13:24, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi, seeing you have been involved in previous Afd debates on the subject I invite you to contribute to this discussion to clarify certain issues about football player notability. I think clearer guidelines are needed to avoid repeated inappropriate nominations for deletion and time consuming discussions. Cheers! StephP 20:39, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

DEFAULTSORT

Hi! I fixed the ones you did today, but in future please use {{DEFAULTSORT:Puett, J. Morgan}} rather than {{DEFAULTSORT|Puett, J. Morgan}} It's a magic word, not a template, so it's supposed to have a colon rather than a pipe. Thanks! Flatterworld 15:26, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

My problem with your afd noms

  1. Notability is a guideline not a policy, and merely quoting WP:N should never be enough in itself to delete an article. Of course, not all editors can staunchly defend their work, but I'm here today.
  2. Notability is highly subjective. Not all topics can be measured by the same standard of notability, thus we have specific guidelines for books, movies, music, and yes TV episodes. WP:EPISODE overrides WP:N in this matter, and it specifically says merge rather than delete, but if merging is not possible then improve the article or leave it alone. I'll chalk this one up to your ignorance on the matter.
  3. I take offense to your user page saying that TV episodes survive afd only because fans show up and daftly vote "keep." As active as you are with afd, you should know that arguments matter more than vote counts. Many Naruto episodes have survived deletion many times before, not because fans vote en masse but because strong arguments have been shown on both sides, and when consensus cannot be reached, it is best to keep the episode. The editors made this rule because mass deletions are more harmful for Wikipedia.
  4. My main problem with your nominations is that the two articles you nominated seem to be victims of your russian roulette game of find-a-random-article-then-nominate-for-{{AFD}}. While we probably share the same goal to clean up fancruft on wikipedia, I don't agree with your methods. There are many good editors here working to improve TV related articles, and your nomination is a spit on the face by not taking into account the work-in-progress of all these editors. In fact, the article is gone now (it has been merged). Your AFD nom is just disruptive; it's the equivalent of complaining when everyone else is cooperating.
  5. And yes, the Will&Grace episode, another innocent fawn that was grazed by your bullet. There are no active editors, there have been no edits for 2 years. Does this make it less notable than a South Park or Family Guy episode? Of course not, it just reflects wikipedia's systemic bias. On any other day this one would get deleted with no debate, but with no one to stand up for it I just had to argue this to prove my point. Articles shouldn't be deleted because you don't like them or you care about them, nor should they should be deleted just because they are stubs. I believe that any contribution is potentially valuable to wikipedia. The articles were created in good faith (they're clearly not vandalisms), and if there was an active editor the article can definitely improve. In fact, just recently a citation was added that the episode won an award from the Writer's Guild of America. One can argue that this already qualifies it for notability.

Hope this changes your views and I hope we can work in the same direction in the future.— Sandtiger 06:49, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

AfD, continued

But I do like your statement that you're willing to change your expressed opinion at AfD, and that people should try to find sources first. You might want to revisit Denis Smyth.DGG 02:17, 20 May 2007 (UTC)

As you say yourself, he's published a lot. Publishing more than avg. is enough for WP:PROF. Personally, I don;t trust my evaluations of his scholarship one way or another, so I trust instead the ones made by the History Dept. at Toronto when they appointed and promoted him on the basis of much more expert peer reviews than I can give. But I'll expand on this at the AfD. DGG 02:37, 20 May 2007 (UTC)

AfD Asylum Seeker Welcome Centre

I note your statement that you think people unfamiliar with topic areas should exercise caution and do checks before jumping in ... well I'd say you seem to be violating your own advice here, mate! How's about a fair go, eh? I've replied to each one of your 'points' - you either have no knowledge of the community services sector in Australia or you're prejudiced against this kind of organisation. Your comments on the references attempt to deny the facts with rather glib dismissiveness. Size or wordcount isn't everything, its content that's the issue. Please read the content of the references and what I've said about them in my rejoinder to yours. Thanks. Eyedubya 12:56, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Jacqueline Cochran

The article Jacqueline Cochran you nominated as a good article has failed  , see Talk:Jacqueline Cochran for reasons why the nomination failed. If or when these points have been taken care of, you may apply for a new nomination of said article. If you oppose this decision, you may ask for a review. It's a nice article, however it needs further work for GA status. Greetings, --Victor12 16:27, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

RFA thanks

  Dear Lankiveil,

Thank you for supporting in my recent RfA. I do plan to go very slowly with AFD's and only after gaining moe experience. Words nor pictures can express my heartfelt appreciation at the confidence the community has shown me. I am both heartened and humbled by this confidence. I will carry the lessons learned from the constructive criticism I have received with me as I edit Wikipedia, and heed those lessons. Special thanks to Pedro and Henrik as nominators. Special thanks to Rudget who wanted to. A very special thanks to Moonriddengirl for her eloquence.

Cheers, Dlohcierekim 20:09, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

As you see your second ill-advised blanking was reverted by an administrator. If you are not in fact a mathematician, you might possibly not be ideally placed to judge the balance of the article on your own.
