Nastaliq

@SpinnerLaserzthe2nd: Hey. Honestly, "lang-fa" suffices in every circumstance. Nastaliq, to my knowledge, has always been limited to writing Persian poetry. It is one of such calligraphic scripts for Persian; there are others too (such as Shekasteh, Thuluth, and Naskh). Okay, I just left a comment on your own talk page. There is no point in using Nastaliq on any occasion on Wikipedia, really. Except if Nastaliq itself is being talked about (or maybe, if we are to force it somewhere, when a piece of poem is getting quoted…?). Assuming you need to use Nastaliq for pre-20th century topics would probably give the impression that we are using a different writing system now for Persian, which is of course false.

Finished with chemo, at least for a while. Doing NHS prehabilitation for liver surgery, probably that will take place in a couple of weeks. Prehab is done in a small gym with only about 2 people taking part. 45 minutes of really hard work! It's building up my strength. Doug Weller talk 14:22, 13 September 2022 (UTC)

Thanks. Going into hospital Wednesday at 7 am. The only other problem is that there was a spot on my lung, I don't know if the chemo fixed that but I was told I might need more chemo after the op. @Doug Weller: Great to hear Doug, including the fitness part. Chemo and cancer treatment in general usually severely weakens the body, and with lower energy levels its usually super hard to work out. Polo: Pakistan sub-section

Hi @LouisAragon: Thanks for the change you made to my change on Polo. I did not originate that material. I toned it down[4] from the inserting editor's promotional style:

Polo was invented in ancient Iran, which spanned the modern day regions of Iran, Afghanistan, and Northern Pakistan. The word 'Polo' is derived from the Balti language's word for a 'ball', polo.

(already present when you were editing the article on 15 Nov}, to the slightly more justifiable: "Polo was extensively developed in Ancient Iran, a region which encompasses current Northern Pakistan, as well as modern-day Iran and Afghanistan.".

Like you, I think this material is better out than in. It's basically a recap of the main points in the "History" and "Origin" sections. Problem is though, there's now a non sequitur left stranded, that seems even more like unsourced semi-boasting: "The traditional or 'free style' Polo or Pulu of Northern Pakistan is still played avidly in its native region." [my emphasis] This makes no sense without context, as well looking even more like a sort of "boosterism" on its own.

The "which spanned the modern day regions of Iran, Afghanistan, and Northern Pakistan" sounded ludicrous to me; not only was it unsourced (amongst others), but ancient Iran, as we know spanned a far wider area than that. Whoever chose to add that stuff clearly did some cherry-picking. As for the "The traditional or 'free style' Polo or Pulu of Northern Pakistan is still played avidly in its native region, I will remove that per failed WP:VER and WP:NPOV. Ishaq al Mawsili

It seems like I made a mistake while reading the article and thought it said "Arab of Persian origin" in the leading paragraph but as I was scrolling through the edit history I realized that it never said that, it said "Arab musician of Persian origin." so no edit in the lead is necessary. However, in the early life section when speaking about Ishaqs father (Ibrahim), he is called an "Arab of Persian origin." I am going to change that to "also a musician of Persian origin." or maybe not include the Persian part since that would be obvious, and it's included in his page. What do you think? Another Cyber.Eyes.2005 sock detected

I've noticed that you have helped point out and investigate sock alts of blocked user, Cyber.Eyes.2005. I personally have found another user which I tried to add to the investigations page [5] but couldn't and would like for you to do it.

User Uzek removed the mention of Hinduism from the lead of the Kalash people page here [6] and here [7], something another blocked sock, i.e., User Hassan Janhal had removed here [8], giving very similar reasons in edit-descriptions, of "per source" and "misinfo".

Also, edit-warring the same thing via IP edits here [9] and here [10], a classic of this user, which has been done multiple times in the past.

One more case I'd like to point out is that another previously block sock Indo Heritage made an edit [11] here in which he removed Delhi and added Western Uttar Pradesh in the lead of the Kauravi dialect page, which the user Uzek reinstated here [12] and here [13].

There also seems to be a third sock here, user Sensai7 who also reinstated the above sock edit on the Kauravi dialect page here [14].

I'd like to point out two more cases of user Uzek reinstating content that they previously added by another Cyber.Eyes.2005 sock.

User Insha22, another sock of this account who was discussed in June of 2022 on the investigations page here [15] and was decided as a sock but not indeffed by the admins because they haven't been active since 2021 [16].

One of the first 10 edits of Insha22 was to remove Pakistan and add Afghanistan in the lead of the Bacha Bazi article: [17] and [18]. Without a coincidence, the oldest edits of Uzek also reinstates the same [19] and [20]. Similarly, one other vandalism of Insha22 was to remove Ancient India from the lead of the Gandhara article and add Pakistan: [21], without a doubt Uzek reinstates the edit: [22]. — Preceding unsigned comment added by RemovePork (talk • contribs) 18:17, 21 March 2023 (UTC)

Also the anti-India and pro-Pak nationalistic pov edit warring, removing India from articles unnecessarily and adding Pakistan in all the accounts is dubious in all previous blocked socks.

Copy Editing Abdallah Khan Confusion

Hiya,

I have been working on some minor copy editing in Abdallah Khan, as you requested, and the Negarestan Palace mural section refers to subjects attending the Shah and then states that some subject is wielding the royal shield, it is unclear to me which subject is holding the royal shield, and I was hoping you may be able to clarify that for me. The same sentence also ends in "amongst others," and I have no a clue to what that is referring to, and if you could also possibly clarify that for me too it would be ever so helpful. I will probably poke you about other things in the article later that prove confusing for me, and I hope that I prove to be more of a help than a hindrance.

As for the Negarestan Palace Mural, this is what the cited source states: "The painting comprises a total of 118 life-size figures; on the end wall was Fatḥ-ʿAlī Shah enthroned and attended by twelve of his sons and six ḡolāms carrying the royal shield, etc., and on the side walls a double row of courtiers above and foreign envoys and guards below.""

I believe they mean that those six gholams carried the royal shield, "amongst other items". Unfortunately, the source does not tell what the names of the individual gholams were, nor which one of them was carrying what item. Hope this helps. Removal of GAMAAN claims.

Hello sir, I did not intended my editing to be disruptive. In the case of vague GAMAAN, its claims is contradicted by multiple other reliable and verified sources International Crisis Group, Pew Research Center, CIA World Factbook, Gallup Poll, World Value Survey, which report that the majority of Iran's population is Muslim, with Shia Muslims being the dominant group and Sunni Muslims making up a smaller minority.

There are several reasons why GAMAAN's claim should be disregarded. First, GAMAAN is not a well-known or established source of information, particularly when it comes to issues related to demographics or religion. In contrast, the CIA World Factbook and Pew Research Center are respected and widely cited sources of information on these topics. Second, GAMAAN's claim is not supported by any clear evidence or methodology.

Finally, GAMAAN's claim is not consistent with what we know about Iran's history and culture. Islam has been the dominant religion in Iran for centuries, and Shia Islam has been the dominant branch of Islam in Iran for even longer. Iran's religious and cultural traditions are deeply rooted in Islam, and it's unlikely that such a large percentage of the population would suddenly abandon this religion.

And when you look at their website, its transparent that there are political or ideological motivations behind GAMAAN's claim. In conclusion, the lack of transparency and credibility of GAMAAN's claims, combined with potential biases and inconsistencies with other reliable sources, suggest that it may be part of a disinformation campaign or have other motivations behind its assertion. This has been discussed to death on the talk page of Religion in Iran. The GAMAAN survey (which is attributed to the source, and is not regarded as a fact) has many reliable sources (The Conversation, Iran International, Manoto, Kayhan Life, etc). When a story is covered by many reliable sources, then it indeed belongs to Wikipedia. Of equal importance, since there's no legal way to leave Islam in Iran, the census figures are also not a RS in terms of what people actually believe and practice (only how the government identifies people).[23] The challenge about researching a totalitarian state is that it's very difficult to get reliable information about what is going on inside. Even reputable sources can make mistakes and have biases, and we must recognize that the aforementioned sources have a track record of skewing against Iran. However, it is essential to note that the protests are not against the religion of Islam, but rather against the violence and brutality that the regime inflicts upon women. This can be seen in other contexts as well. For instance, Pakistan has a 95% Muslim population but if the Pakistani government were to enforce a draconian law on mandatory cover for women, it would likely spark thousands of protests. However, this would not be an indicator that the people protesting are non-Muslims.

Regarding the previous discussions that have reached an erroneous consensus, GAMAAN so-called survey widely distorts reality. It's like giving too much weight to a fringe notion. Wikipedia is not written saying "this source comes from a hostile nation" (WP:SOAPBOX). It is written using reliable sources. Nothing else. Iran (like many other countries) has close to zero freedom of press. See Censorship in Iran. Thus Iranian sources are not reliable for topics related to politics, amongst others. Keep in mind that obviously not every publication from let's say the US or Germany is RS. Otherwise we wouldn't have stuff such as The Armenian Massacres in Ottoman Turkey. But its more of a case-to-case problem over there, rather than systematic and on a massive scale, such as in Iran. This isn't the subject, the UN as well as other states condemned it as a terror attack, there is no source on the article describing it as a "mass shooting", it should be changed to "terror attack" and reliable sources (FM statements of non-Iran countries and the United Nations). Other than that I've never heard of ISIS doing "mass shooting", all their attacks are described as a terrorist attack, ISIS is a terrorist group.

Wikipedia is written using reliable sources. Every edit has to be verifiable and backed up by sources. You can't merely add such categories if a political party or individual is not "fascist" according to WP:RS. The same applies to all the other categories you attempted to introduce into articles in the past that I or others reverted. We've been through this on several occassions in the past and you know it. I will give you one final chance even though I fear we have already reached the domain of WP:CIR. Next time, I will have to report you to WP:ANI. We can't keep cleaning up the mess you leave behind with all due respect (i.e. a good chunk of your edits are wasting the community's times and are therefore unfortunately detrimental) - LouisAragon (talk) 00:52, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

Regarding your inquiries, kindly see WP:RS (which I already linked above). It has all the information you require. You can bring particular sources to WP:RSN if you are unsure about their reliability, but generally speaking, when in (strong) doubt, you should just stay away from them. That's what I do too. Yes, it would be beneficial to the project if you undid any adjustments you felt were done without supporting evidence. Hope this helps. I suppose I fell for it again because I saw pages such as Boko haram categorized as far right without citation, and that made me go down into a bit of a slippery slope. But I will be more vigilant from now on and look for proper sources before editing. However, I’m not too sure which sources would be allowed to use on Wikipedia. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Too similar?

Hi. I just looked at Central Asia revision history, and it seems Special:Contributions/WikiAmerican1 is just the new account of Special:Contributions/Ricemaster12. Very similar edits/comments on very same articles/talk pages. It is not a sockpuppetry case because the original account is stale, but it is better to review and verify their edits. --Mann Mann (talk) 07:33, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

@Mann Mann: Yeah, I recall that account. I concur that they exhibit a significant overlap in promoting the same peculiar POV ("South Asianizing" Iran, while integrating Central Asia and Afghanistan with areas to the West and North), in violation of WP:RS, WP:UNDUE and WP:OR. (amongst others). Overal WP:TENDENTIOUS at its core. - LouisAragon (talk) 19:49, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

I reverted their edit.[26] However, the article seems have some more issues; e.g. citing unreliable sources like this[27] (which I removed it and tagged the part). --Mann Mann (talk) 06:04, 26 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi, regarding sockpuppetry, I thought you may both be interested in knowing that they have recently began using their original account again. As you can see here, the account was used to make very minor edits to the addition of their own map concerning the definitions of South Asia (which has repeatedly been reverted before).
