Whitespace
I just read through the diff at COVID-19 for the last couple of day, and your efforts to normalize the whitespace made it particularly long. I appreciate the other fixes, but I could have lived without the whitespace changes. Could I gently discourage you from doing that (in either direction) in the future, specifically on long and busy articles? WhatamIdoing (talk) 05:27, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
Normalizing the whitespace in citations makes the citations much easier to read for doing maintenance on them, and aside from muddying the diffs, it's quite harmless. I'm sorry that it made the diff harder to read this time around, but as a large change it's a one-off that makes the article more internally consistent. I'll keep your request in mind—I really appreciate the work you do and I don't want to be a bother—but I'd prefer to keep this tool in my toolbox. {{Nihiltres |talk |edits}} 16:30, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
I don't think it makes the wikitext any easier to read for myself, but obviously you do, and others might agree with you. In that particular article, I think that most of the refs will need to be replaced anyway, so I wouldn't have bothered re-formatting them.
Next month will be the six-month anniversary of Italy declaring its lockdown, and I'm hoping that we'll see some good secondary sources appear then. WhatamIdoing (talk) 20:18, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

Reply tool
The number of comments posted with the Reply Tool from March through June 2020. People used the Reply Tool to post over 7,400 comments with the tool.
The Reply tool has been available as a Beta Feature at the Arabic, Dutch, French and Hungarian Wikipedias since 31 March 2020. The first analysis showed positive results.
The Editing team released the Reply tool as a Beta Feature at eight other Wikipedias in early August. Those Wikipedias are in the Chinese, Czech, Georgian, Serbian, Sorani Kurdish, Swedish, Catalan, and Korean languages. If you would like to use the Reply tool at your wiki, please tell User talk:Whatamidoing (WMF).
The Reply tool is still in active development. Per request from the Dutch Wikipedia and other editors, you will be able to customize the edit summary. (The default edit summary is "Reply".) A "ping" feature is available in the Reply tool's visual editing mode. This feature searches for usernames. Per request from the Arabic Wikipedia, each wiki will be able to set its own preferred symbol for pinging editors. Per request from editors at the Japanese and Hungarian Wikipedias, each wiki can define a preferred signature prefix in the page MediaWiki:Discussiontools-signature-prefix. For example, some languages omit spaces before signatures. Other communities want to add a dash or a non-breaking space.
New requirements for user signatures
Next: New discussion tool
Next, the team will be working on a tool for quickly and easily starting a new discussion section to a talk page. To follow the development of this new tool, please put the New Discussion Tool project page on your watchlist.

Listings on category pages are sorted on each wiki for that language using a library. For a brief period on 16 November, changes to categories will not be sorted correctly for most languages. This is because the developers are upgrading to a new version of the library. They will then use a script to fix the existing categories. This will take a few hours or a few days depending on how big the wiki is. You can read more. [48][49]

ISBN determination
Hi Nihiltres, I was just wondering how you determined the ISBN for this edit? Is 9 a default? Thanks, CMD (talk) 03:15, 11 December 2020 (UTC)
I plugged it into the ISBN tool I built (yes, the SSL is broken at the moment) and found that the check digit, incorrect for an ISBN-13, was correct for the ISBN-10 formed by truncating the "978" prefix; the error was almost certainly the result of converting the ISBN from ISBN-10 to ISBN-13 without updating the check digit. While looking up the corrected ISBN in WorldCat, as I usually do, found no results, a web search found that the same source is cited with the valid check digit at Writ of Kalikasan, so it seems safe to assume that the error is solely in the check digit. {{Nihiltres |talk |edits}} 05:51, 11 December 2020 (UTC)

Editing news 2021 #1
Read this in another languageSubscription list for this newsletter
Reply tool
Completion rates for comments made with the Reply tool and full-page wikitext editing. Details and limitations are in this report.
The Reply tool is available at most other Wikipedias.
  • The Reply tool has been deployed as an opt-out preference to all editors at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.
  • It is also available as a Beta Feature at almost all Wikipedias except for the English, Russian, and German-language Wikipedias. If it is not available at your wiki, you can request it by following these simple instructions.
Research notes:
  • As of January 2021, more than 3,500 editors have used the Reply tool to post about 70,000 comments.
  • There is preliminary data from the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedia on the Reply tool. Junior Contributors who use the Reply tool are more likely to publish the comments that they start writing than those who use full-page wikitext editing.[73]
  • The Editing and Parsing teams have significantly reduced the number of edits that affect other parts of the page. About 0.3% of edits did this during the last month.[74] Some of the remaining changes are automatic corrections for Special:LintErrors.
  • A large A/B test will start soon.[75] This is part of the process to offer the Reply tool to everyone. During this test, half of all editors at 24 Wikipedias (not including the English Wikipedia) will have the Reply tool automatically enabled, and half will not. Editors at those Wikipeedias can still turn it on or off for their own accounts in Special:Preferences.
New discussion tool
Screenshot of version 1.0 of the New Discussion Tool prototype.
The new tool for starting new discussions (new sections) will join the Discussion tools in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures at the end of January. You can try the tool for yourself.[76] You can leave feedback in this thread or on the talk page.
Next: Notifications
During Talk pages consultation 2019, editors said that it should be easier to know about new activity in conversations they are interested in. The Notifications project is just beginning. What would help you become aware of new comments? What's working with the current system? Which pages at your wiki should the team look at? Please post your advice at mw:Talk:Talk pages project/Notifications.

Redirect template issue
Could you have a look at Wikipedia talk:Redirect#Redirect hatnote issue. Thanks. MB 20:52, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for fixing this. So far it has caught around 15 more hatnote errors, some going back 8 years. Since you seem to be quite technically adept, I have another question. I have been monitoring Category:Articles with redirect hatnotes needing review. Often, an article is in this category because the redirect is listed at WP:RFD. In that case, the hatnote really doesn't need review - there is nothing that can/should be done until the RFD is closed, which can take weeks. It would be much more convenient if the module could determine if the reason a redirect did not agree with the hatnote was because of an RFD. If this is possible, then these articles could be listed separately in the tracking category or put into a separate category (e.g. Category:Articles with redirect hatnotes impacted by RFD). That would save me a lot of time. MB 05:26, 26 March 2021 (UTC)
Hmm. It's possible, but it would be really ugly to do, because the only way I'm aware to do it involves reading the content of the redirect page. On the one hand, that's labelled an expensive operation and should be used with care, on the other, it's already used by the Module:Redirect functionality that gets the target of a redirect. This is a minor enough problem that I think we ought to wait and see if Extension:CategoryToolbox gets enabled on Wikimedia wikis, because that would be a far cleaner solution. {{Nihiltres |talk |edits}} 16:28, 26 March 2021 (UTC)
Just a thought, "expensiveness" really doesn't matter much since this check would only be necessary at the point of getting to addCategory('Articles with redirect hatnotes needing review') . At that point, is there a way to check if the target title is in Category:All redirects for discussion? I'm not sure if that what you meant by "needing to read the content of the redirect page" (or is doing that exactly what you want to use CategoryToolbox for)? MB 14:41, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
Yeah, I think you're right about the order of operations there now that I've thought about it. I've prototyped an update that would test for the presence of "#invoke:RfD" in the redirect page source. Testing for categories would be much harder, as it would require getting the parsed content of the page, which is why I want CategoryToolbox for a long-term solution. This solution is fragile (e.g. it could be maliciously defeated by <!-- #invoke:RfD --> or broken by comments) but it should be good enough to be worth implementing, and in the longer term we can perhaps substitute in better tests once available. I'll need to poke at the tests some more, but it's prototyped, at least. {{Nihiltres |talk |edits}} 18:55, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

When newcomers had the Reply tool and tried to post on a talk page, they were more successful at posting a comment. (Source)
Earlier this year, the Editing team ran a large study of the Reply Tool. The main goal was to find out whether the Reply Tool helped newer editors communicate on wiki. The second goal was to see whether the comments that newer editors made using the tool needed to be reverted more frequently than comments newer editors made with the existing wikitext page editor.
The key results were:
These results give the Editing team confidence that the tool is helpful.
Looking ahead
The team is planning to make the Reply tool available to everyone as an opt-out preference in the coming months. This has already happened at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.
The next step is to resolve a technical challenge. Then, they will deploy the Reply tool first to the Wikipedias that participated in the study. After that, they will deploy it, in stages, to the other Wikipedias and all WMF-hosted wikis.
You can turn on "Discussion Tools" in Beta Features now. After you get the Reply tool, you can change your preferences at any time in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion.

IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

InternetArchiveBot helps saving online sources on some wikis. It adds them to Wayback Machine and links to them there. This is so they don't disappear if the page that was linked to is removed. It currently has a problem with linking to the wrong date when it moves pages from archive.is to web.archive.org. [164]

Future changes
Some Wikimedia wikis use Flagged Revisions or pending changes. It hides edits from new and unregistered accounts for readers until they have been patrolled. The auto review action in Flagged Revisions will no longer be logged. All old logs of auto-review will be removed. This is because it creates a lot of logs that are not very useful. [167]

If you use the Monobook skin you can choose to switch off responsive design on mobile. This will now work for more skins. If Enable responsive MonoBook design is unticked you need to also untick the new preference Enable responsive mode. Otherwise it will stop working. Interface admins can automate this process on your wiki. You can read more.
