Can you help with the request at MediaWiki talk:Autoblockedtext at all? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:44, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

I've had a look but don't think I can think of anything. -- WOSlinker (talk) 17:43, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

WikiProject Star Trek banner

Just a quick question. The Category:WikiProject Star Trek banners was set up because there are two templates out there: Template:StarTrekproject, which redirects to Template:WikiProject Star Trek. There are a bunch of articles using "Startrekproject", with your changes, will the WP:TREK article alerts still pick up changes to those pages? -- Aatrek / TALK 18:07, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

I'm not certain that it will but I think there's more chance that it will work than the way it was configured. If you look at the ArticleAlertbotSubscription template docs, you'll see that you can either use the banner or wgcat option. If you use the wgcat option, it should be a category in which the article's talk pages are placed, not a category that the banner templates belong to. So it would need to be a category that every star trek related talk page belonged to. This can be a useful option if there is more than one project banner, but in your case, there is only one banner with a redirected copy. The bot does something similar to what Special:WhatLinksHere does, so it can see through the redirect. -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:15, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
Ah, I see. If the main banner was a redirect to another page, it wouldn't work, but redirects to the main banner work just fine. -- Aatrek / TALK 18:18, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
You might as well, just remove the category from the templates and then add a {{db-catempty}} on the category. -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:23, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the help. -- Aatrek / TALK 18:24, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

WikiProject Check Wikipedia -- new update from toolserver?

Hi, fellow Wikipedia Checker. I noticed that this change of yours seemed to put back some sections I had deleted because they were done, and with the same articles listed. One example is error 17 -- category duplication. Am I missing something? --Auntof6 (talk) 08:39, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

I'm not really sure why that happens. I just copied over the toolserver output as it had a newer date than the version that was on the wiki. I've spotted similar issues myself after some updates as well. -- WOSlinker (talk) 08:42, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Template:WikiProject Metal and Template:WikiProject Rock music

Made the changes; please check and get back to me to confirm all is OK. --Stephen 23:58, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, yes, that's fine. -- WOSlinker (talk) 07:10, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

dyslexia template

Hi

I noticed that you made an adjustment to to the dyslexia template. Not being familiar with how these things work could you please explain the change you made. Sorry to be a newbie on this issue.

dolfrog (talk) 12:19, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi,

Nothing that fancy, [1], just changed tnavbar to navbar to avoid a redirect. Doesn't make any difference really. -- WOSlinker (talk) 17:25, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks forthe explanation

Unpleasant Editor UBX

Thanks for making this canonical. I'll try to understand better what I did wrong and you did right. I appreciate the help. --Nemonoman (talk) 21:14, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

substituted templates

Thank you for your efforts in removing substituted templates from articles. Please note when you do so that if what you are removing has an empty set of noinclude's, at some point in the article's history AWB probably pulled whatever was in the noinclude's out and moved it to the bottom. It would be appreciated if you would check the bottom of the article for categories and interwikis that belong to the template you are fixing and remove them at the same time. Thank you. --Pascal666 02:45, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

Category:The Knife singles

Please refrain from out of process category deletions as you appear to have done with Category:The Knife singles. Follow the directions in WP:CFD. Vegaswikian (talk) 07:35, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

How was I to know? The category was empty and didn't have any CFD notice on it, so I marked it as an empty category for deletion. -- WOSlinker (talk) 10:00, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

Edit wars?

The type of behavior you exhibited at Talk:Credit Foncier of America is disappointing. Please refrain from potential edit wars. • Freechild'sup? 16:43, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

The parameters 2, 3, ..., 10 are deprecated and support for them will shortly be stopped. Therefore, unless WOSlinker's edit is applied, the shell will not work properly soon. Having said that, I guess he was working from Category:WikiProject banner shells with deprecated parameters and didn't notice that you had reverted this one. By the way, claiming you have more authority because you are the "page founder" does seem to smack of ownership even though I'm sure you didn't intend it that way. Regards, — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:08, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
Yes, I was working from that category and hadn't noticed that I'd already done it once. That said, there was no need to revert my first edit either. -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:02, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
Can I ask why you are making these edits manually, given that AnomieBOT will shortly be tackling these? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 18:09, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
I hadn't been following the discussions on WPBS, and there was only a few with numbers > 6, so I thought I'd do a few. Wasn't planning on going any lower than that though. -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:15, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

WikiProject SFBA and WikiProject California

Hi again. Thanks for all your help with template tweaks. I was wondering if you could tweak {{SFBAProject}} to categorize pages at the project's article root page Category:WikiProject San Francisco Bay Area articles. Also would it be possible to replace the {{WikiProject California/sandbox}} University of California task force with an SFBA task force. I'm trying to see how big the overlap is, and if a project merge would be a good idea. -Optigan13 (talk) 08:28, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I've done the first part [2] and will look at the second part later on today. -- WOSlinker (talk) 14:55, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
I've added it to {{WikiProject California/sandbox}} as a 4th taskforce with |sfba= & |sfba-importance= parameters. -- WOSlinker (talk) 17:45, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Bug at Template:Articles by Importance

Hi- The AbI template is not displaying the count for "Unknown-importance" topic articles correctly, see: Category:WikiProject Schools articles by importance and Category:Unknown-importance school articles, where the AbI cat shows 274 articles, and the Unknown-impor cat shows 11,091 articles. For some reason, the 274 matches the AbQ category of Category:Unassessed school articles, which is the quality count, not the AbI count. Please take a look! --Funandtrvl (talk) 15:44, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

I've fixed it. It was counting Category:Unassessed school articles instead of Category:Unknown-importance school articles -- WOSlinker (talk) 15:53, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

{{Importance Class Summary}}

Hello, I have made a companion to the {{Assessment Class Summary}} for importance. I am having some issues getting it to work correctly, Would you like to take a look? --Jeremy (blah blah) 01:26, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Done. I've used the {{impor}} template rather than those other templates to get the list of the right. -- WOSlinker (talk) 07:50, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Incorrect data

Ok, this may be a bit of a stretch, as it is regarding edits you made in April 2008! I am currently going through all of the Worcestershire village articles, checking data, and I have noticed that you added hideously inaccurate data to Holy Cross, Worcestershire and Hopwood, Worcestershire. The problem looks like you have copied and pasted an infobox from a previous article, and forgotten to change/remove the appropriate fields (notably the postcode/post town fields). I'm not moaning at you, but I just want to ask if these are one off errors around that time, or is it worth me checking your contributions for that period, to check you haven't made the same mistake on other articles, which may have slipped unnoticed? The period in question is here in your contributions. Jeni (talk)(Jenuk1985) 22:43, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Hmmm, I did try to just add correct information and leave the fields blank if they were unknown but there may the odd mistake in there. I picked couple of them at random from the link above and have just checked those now and they looked ok. You could always do the same as well (if you want to). -- WOSlinker (talk) 23:23, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi- Would you be able to help us with setting up the "B" check-list and adding the map & image parameters to this template? I removed the "unref" parameter, since that category was empty, and I need help with the B-list stuff, etc. Thanks --Funandtrvl (talk) 16:47, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

I've made the changes in a sandbox version for you to review. -- WOSlinker (talk) 19:30, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject IRC/Assessment

Re this edit [7] to Wikipedia:WikiProject IRC/Assessment... Where did the Merge, Current, and Future classes go? ;) Merge in particular is going to be seeing even more use in this WikiProject as I begin to merge well over 100 articles (some of which are currently 'deleted') into Glossaries. --Tothwolf (talk) 19:32, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

They weren't in the template. I've now added them in. -- WOSlinker (talk) 20:05, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
Ah, that would explain it. It looks good now. Are you going to do something similar for the importance/priority section? --Tothwolf (talk) 08:56, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
Yes, there is a similar version for importance at {{Assessment Importance Summary}}. -- WOSlinker (talk) 17:50, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
We could just about create the entire /Assessment page from templates now ;) --Tothwolf (talk) 20:40, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
Just about, if you really wanted to. There seems to be only about two or three main styles for the Assessment pages, with most projects having copied from anothe project and then just changed things slightly. I've got a list of about 200 with I'm slowly working through to use the Assessment Class Summary template, but there's still a lot of other projects out there that are not on my list as they are using on of those other styles. -- WOSlinker (talk) 20:45, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
When I went to create the /Assessment subpage for the IRC WikiProject, mainly what I seemed to find were /Assessment pages with only {{Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/X articles by quality statistics}} and sometimes {{Grading scheme}}. I was trying to create something that would be more useful and ended up compiling information and notes from a number of /Assessment pages and rewriting some of it so it fit together better. --Tothwolf (talk) 20:55, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

I left you to fix up the template above. It's a mess of unsubstituted parser functions and includeonlys. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:14, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Code review

Hi there. If you have any spare time (e.g if the weather with you is as bad as it is here) and you feel able to review my code for the collapsed sections (see Template talk:WPBannerMeta#Notes with no text) then it would be much appreciated! Hope things are going well with you, — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:34, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

By the way I've checked the cricket template and the only thing I am concerned about is the B-class checklist which doesn't match the standard criteria at all. Converting it would effective render the assessments as useless, so unless they really want it, maybe it is better to implement without the checklist. What do you think? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:53, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
I've added in a custom checklist against HOOK_IMPORTANCE, so the checklist descriptions are now in the same order as the current version of the banner. I've also reviewed your code and replied on the WPBannerMeta talkpage. -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:57, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
That's looking pretty good, but there's a small error somewhere. See Template:WikiProject Cricket/testcases. I don't have time to work it out now though. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 23:14, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
I've fixed that ifeq issue, I'd missed out the #. There is still a small difference in functionality but that may be ok. The current live version assesses as B class even if the checklist is not fully filled out with yes values but also puts the page into Category:Cricket articles needing attention. -- WOSlinker (talk) 06:35, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Asbox name= paramater

I see you've been doing some conversion to asbox... Please ensure you include name={{subst:PAGENAME}} as a parameter. FWIW you should also always tempsort the page as " " (two spaces). –xenotalk 14:27, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

  • You neglected to include the tempsort paramater on a bunch of the templates that previously had them, i.e. [8]. I also see value in having the bot do all these, for consistency in the asbox code. Do you mind if I mass-rv? The ones you edited were already in the bot's worklist. –xenotalk 14:32, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

If you want to rv & redo by bot, that's fine with me. -- WOSlinker (talk) 17:54, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Cool. I'm not sure if it's neccessary with the changes to asbox to have it tempsort by default. But some of them were sorting based on something other than a "space". I also notice you didn't bring the pix parameter for some, so the stub icon size changed. –xenotalk 18:00, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
That was deliberate. In some case the stub picture was used on more than one stub but was not set to the same size. I did set the pix size on the occasional one but most looked ok without that set. -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:03, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
Compare
-- WOSlinker (talk) 18:07, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
Cool - No worries if this was intentional and stylistically motivated. I don't think I will mass-rv your changes in this case. Especially given that tempsorting is done by default now. –xenotalk 18:22, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Template:WPAVIATION/bchecklistcats

Is there a way to change this to place articles in Category:Aviation articles with incomplete B-Class checklists only in the case of there being an empty item, instead of every case when all five are not yes? Right now the category holds 11,000+ articles, many of which have complete checklists, just not all yes (i.e. B-class). - Trevor MacInnis contribs 21:52, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

I've put a version in Template:WPAVIATION/bchecklistcats/sandbox which will only put articles into Category:Aviation articles with incomplete B-Class checklists if at least one of the checklist items is blank. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:16, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Help please

Your attention would be appreciated at Template talk:WPBM#Auto=yes is a bit intrusive. Many thanks — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:02, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

With all due respect

... but you deprecate templates very sloppily.

  1. Please add the date=April 2024 parameter to {{Tdeprecated}}
  2. Please remove any outdated protection templates while you're at it
  3. if a template is not in use at all (at least in the namespace it is meant to be used in), don't use the <noinclude>...</noinclude> tags. Debresser (talk) 11:23, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks...

...for the note about my botched move, and for converting my userboxes to use the {{Userbox}} template! –xeno talk 16:26, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

 This user has been awarded a userbox barnstar for for converting xeno's boxen to use {{userbox}}.
I've done those for you. -- WOSlinker (talk) 17:28, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
Thanks very much. –xeno talk 17:46, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
Done. There's still a lot of other ones out there to convert. It's going to be a long job. -- WOSlinker (talk) 12:58, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Would it be good if Template:Userbox had a category parameter to categorise transclusions, with a proper opt-out? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:15, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

An excellent idea, the only contra would be that it may encourage further spurious user cats.. –xenotalk 17:17, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
Sometimes there are two categories, so may need two if you are going to do it. would need to support category=no, categories=no & nocat=yes (as there's already a mixture of all 3 out there). Also there are 3 userbox templates to do. {{userbox}}, {{userbox-r}} & {{userbox-2}}. -- WOSlinker (talk) 17:53, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
Are there enough with two categories to make it worthwhile supporting it? If not, the second one could be added in the messy way. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:49, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Probably the best way to add a single category option would be to add something like this:

{{#ifeq:{{NAMESPACE}}|{{ns:2}}|[[Category:{{{usercategory}}}|{{PAGENAME}}]]}}

So that the cateogry only gets added if the banner is on a userpage. There isn't any need to pass through category, categories or nocat parameters then. -- WOSlinker (talk) 17:33, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

You're right, a lot of them do have two categories. Seems excessive to me. But it might be worth an extra parameter. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:26, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Here's some code for two params:

{{#if:{{{usercategory|}}}|{{#ifeq:{{NAMESPACE}}|{{ns:2}}|[[Category:{{{usercategory}}}|{{PAGENAME}}]]}}}}
{{#if:{{{usercategory2|}}}|{{#ifeq:{{NAMESPACE}}|{{ns:2}}|[[Category:{{{usercategory2}}}|{{PAGENAME}}]]}}}}

-- WOSlinker (talk) 10:16, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Is my edit to Template:User en-3 satisfactory? Does it need the {{{categories}}} opt-out parameter? If so, should {{userbox}} have this as well or is the namespace detection sufficient? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:06, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
Namespace detection would probably be sufficient. The category/categories/nocat optouts are mainly there because of no namespace detection. You should add the usercategory option to {{userbox-r}} and {{userbox-2}} as well. -- WOSlinker (talk) 17:13, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
Okay, and can you tell me what you think about Template:Userbox-level/sandbox? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:14, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
There's no real standard for those categories. Sometimes the template just uses one category, so I don't think it would be worth doing. Just as easy to have two categories to fill in instead. -- WOSlinker (talk) 17:19, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
Okay, I was just trying to be too clever :) — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:25, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Help please

Hi, could you help me work out why Category:WikiProject assessment categories needing attention is so big? Thanks in advance, — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 22:55, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

Some of them are real mistakes, some of them are just case issues (e.g. list instead of List) and for some reason anything with punctuation marks is being added but one thing that should be easy to fix is the Unassessed ones (change -Class to {{#ifeq:{{{class|}}}|Unassessed||-Class}} -- WOSlinker (talk) 06:41, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. Should I put {{{class}}} through a mask before testing it? Any idea why punctuation should cause such problems? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:09, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
I think PAGENAME convers & to & so the compare doesn't work. However, you can use PAGENAME:xxxxx to comare both (I think).
Try changing
{{#if:{{{topic|}}}|{{#if:{{{class|}}}
  |{{#ifeq:{{PAGENAME}}|{{{class}}}-Class {{{topic}}} articles|
   |[[Category:WikiProject assessment categories needing attention]]
  }}
 }}}}
to
{{#if:{{{topic|}}}|{{#if:{{{class|}}}
  |{{#ifeq:{{PAGENAME}}|{{PAGENAME:{{{class}}}{{#ifeq:{{{class|}}}|Unassessed||-Class}} {{{topic}}} articles}}|
   |[[Category:WikiProject assessment categories needing attention]]
  }}
 }}}}
-- WOSlinker (talk) 10:03, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
That's working really well, thanks! — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:11, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
You could also add some simlar code to {{Cat importance}} -- WOSlinker (talk) 17:12, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
  Done — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:20, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
Just out of curiosity, what is the purpose of this category and how are pages added to it? PC78 (talk) 20:34, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
It's showing a list of the category pages using the {{cat class}} template but are not of the expected format for the name (XX-Class Topic articles). So of those that were in this category were where the class parameter had been specified incorrectly. e.g. [9] -- WOSlinker (talk) 21:02, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
Ah, OK. The two Hawaii categories listed there seem awfully redundant. PC78 (talk) 21:09, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
Yes, probably the individual cat & dab parameters should be removed from he {{WPHawaii}} banner as they are duplicating the class param. -- WOSlinker (talk) 21:12, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
They redundant, but only since my edit earlier today. Before that all those categories were NA-Class. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 22:29, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
That makes more sense if things are in transition. The WP:SHIPS category looks suspect too; despite there being two categories for NA-Class (pages & articles) the banner doesn't appear to support NA-Class. PC78 (talk) 23:12, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
The Ships banner was going to be converted over to WPBannerMeta but then it was opposed for some reason. This was a while ago though. -- WOSlinker (talk) 06:30, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

Well done

  What a Brilliant Idea Barnstar
I've no idea how you've done it but this award is for creating the stubtree template. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 18:31, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
+1... And me neither...What is it, in that soup of code, that actually chops up the phrase? –xenotalk 18:32, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. It looks slightly more complicated than it really is as I had remove some the carriage returns from stubtree/2 to make it work properly. -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:37, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
It's the {{Str index}} template that extracts a single character from the text. I then just call it quite a few times to get each individual letter and pass them all over to stubtree/3 as individual parameters. -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:40, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
Yes, I got there, and tried to follow the breadcrumbs to grandma's house but I guess I got lost along the way... –xenotalk 18:42, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

How about moving Template:Asbox/templatepage/XXX -> Template:Asbox/XXX ? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 18:46, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

To make it shorter? -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:48, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
Sure. But it's up to you. Just a suggestion. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:27, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
Ok, moved. -- WOSlinker (talk) 19:35, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm presuming that this was too complicated or impossible, otherwise you would have done it, but with a template such as {{Food-magazine-stub}}, it would also make sense to include {{Food-stub}} in the hierarchy. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:11, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

Silly question about odd edit...

Hi WOSlinker -probably a silly question, but is there any reason you decided that Kyrgysztan was in South America? :) Grutness...wha? 10:58, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

That would be a mistake on my part when changing over a set of poet stubs to use asbox. -- WOSlinker (talk) 12:24, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Would appreciate feedback

I'm discovering how the Chicago Project creates, uses, and maintaines category codes. I will be keeping my notes within an article I hope other experienced editors could expand and improve. The article is at Wikipedia:WikiProject Chicago/Categories. Please review it, especiall the section on PCSs. The similarity between the Illinois Project and the Chicago Project is evident there.

We, at one time used Category:Category-Class Chicago articles and the Illinois project may still be using Category:Category-Class WikiProject Illinois articles. As the last editor of Category:Category-Class WikiProject Illinois articles I'm hoping you can give me an idea of how your Project uses the category and if it is similar to what I have at Wikipedia:WikiProject Chicago/Categories#Project Scope Categories. Does a bot use Category:Category-Class WikiProject Illinois articles? If so, what does it do and where is its output? If you don't have time for this, would you please either forward this messge to someone who may be able to help me or simply give me the name of the person and I will contact them. Thank you in advance. Pknkly (talk) 15:51, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

I'm not actually a member of WikiProject Illinois, it's just that I edited the category due to my work on templates such as {{cat class}} and {{WPBannerMeta}}. Speaking more generally about Category-Class categories, I think it just depends of wether the project want to tag all the categories that they use or contain articles that they have an interest in. You could maybe try asking at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Illinois but the discussions don't look that active there. If you wanted to find more categories to add to your lists, you could use the toolserver search to find them. Sorry I can't really be that much of a help. -- WOSlinker (talk) 17:50, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

Can I copy the question and answer into the Talk for our our article at Wikipedia:WikiProject Chicago/Categories?

Yes, that's fine. -- WOSlinker (talk) 06:33, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for cleaning up my Userbox. If I decide to make another one, I'll put it where it's supposed to go. Thanks also for correcting my userpage. Cheers! Ollie Garkey (talk) 00:16, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

changes to the various food and drink project templates

What does the |QUALITY_SCALE=subpage change do? --Jeremy (blah blahI did it!) 18:30, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

At the moment, it just does the same as |QUALITY_SCALE=yes but we are planning to change WPBannerMeta so that only when banners have |QUALITY_SCALE=subpage will they use the custom class subpage which WikiProject Food and drink already does. So over all this doesn't mean any difference to the WikiProject Food and drink banner, but does tidy up the Quality scale usage in WPBannerMeta. -- WOSlinker (talk) 19:15, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

I didn't even know that page existed until know. What does that do? --Jeremy (blah blahI did it!) 19:44, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

It might be more understandable now. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:47, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
Normally if you select QUALITY_SCALE=yes, you can use FA,FL,GA,A,B,C,Start,Stub,List,NA & Unassessed classes. If you also add FULL_QUALITY_SCALE=yes, you also additionally get Image,Project,Portal,Category,Template & Disambig. If that is not enough then you need to add a /class subpage to support a custom scale. In Food and drinks case, it is so that you can also use Redirect. -- WOSlinker (talk) 19:51, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

Oh, I see now! That is where the custom mask resides, I always wondered how that worked. Thanks for the info. --Jeremy (blah blahI did it!) 19:58, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

Hello there!

hi, may you help me with a template please, i wanna change the color of the background of it, its the tunisian template. thanks 41.249.9.161 (talk) 19:34, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

Which tunisian template do you mean? -- WOSlinker (talk) 19:46, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

Template:WikiProject Rugby league

Hi, you've made some changes to Template:WikiProject Rugby league and I've noticed that all our templates, of which there are hundreds are now in the NA category rather than the template category. I didn't want to go straight in and undo because I can see you're attempting some kind of project but wasn't too sure what you were aiming to achieve. Could you set it so we have the full range of categories options for classification please? Thanks LunarLander // talk // 01:32, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi, sorry about that. I've undone my second edit. The warnings shown on the template page made it look like the extended classes weren't being used so I switched it to standard but I now see that those warning werre for the taskforce, not thr main scale. I'll try to make some change to the warnings to state that they are for the taskforce and not the main quality scale. Thanks for pointing out my mistake. -- WOSlinker (talk) 08:02, 19 September 2009 (UTC)
No problem, thanks for the quick response. LunarLander // talk // 00:52, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

Stub templates

I do not understand your request. I do understand you would rather I used your template than than part of what I am presently using. However, I don't know which part of my present template you want me to replace. If you could copy and paste that which you want replaced over on my talk page below your request, as am illustration, I will swap in your preferred stub statements in its stead.

Georgejdorner (talk) 23:55, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

Okay, done. I am a fan of "simpler is better". I will link you with a stub newly done with your template so you can check it for correctness.

Quality scale

So, do you think we're all set to go with the new code? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:20, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

The main code seems ok but the template page category warnings do not work properly with the new QUALITY_SCALE options. -- WOSlinker (talk) 21:45, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
Okay, I'll see to that. And I think the taskforce hook might need an adjustment. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 06:28, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
The hook could be done as a separate change afterwards though. -- WOSlinker (talk) 06:48, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
Shall I just pass QUALITY_SCALE=yes from the hooks and restore the previous code for "yes" for the moment. Otherwise subpages would not be used. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:28, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

Getting a bit tired with all this stuff. Any help would be appreciated. I don't suppose you use IRC or similar? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 16:36, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

I don't use IRC. What is left to do? -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:56, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
  1. Finishing off /templatepage category prompts.
  2. Working out how to handle to handle the /taskforces and /qualitycats hooks.
  3. Making sure that we don't switch on any quality scales unintentionally. (I've added a tracking category.)
  4. And probably some other stuff which I've forgotten about :)
— Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:05, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
Right, I'll start with looking at number 2. -- WOSlinker (talk) 20:00, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
There are 3 different hooks that will need changing.
  1. hooks/taskforces
  2. hooks/qualimpintersect
  3. hooks/qualitycats
Rather than try to syncronise all the hook changes & changing values in current banners, I'm thinking that just adding back in the QUALITY_SCALE=yes (might mean subpage) into the /class template is going to be simpler to start with. So that's what I've done. I'll still be looking at changing the code in the hook templates but there will be no need to wait for this now. -- WOSlinker (talk) 20:24, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

Outdent

All that needs doing for the moment to add |QUALITY_SCALE={{{QUALITY_SCALE|yes}}} to all 3 hooks.

  1. taskforces - [10]
  2. qualimpintersect - [11]
  3. qualitycats - [12]

This should be done before the other changes are made. -- WOSlinker (talk) 20:35, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

I've done a little bit of work on the template warnings now, and they seem better now. Just wondering though in /class/sandbox if |#default = Class mask should be changed to |standard = Class mask, |#default = padleft:¬ so that things like |QUALITY_SCALE=rubbish do not then allow the class to be shown. -- WOSlinker (talk) 21:12, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
I see you've been busy! I agree with your |QUALITY_SCALE={{{QUALITY_SCALE|yes}}} suggestion and putting back the "yes" code. I think it is logical if |QUALITY_SCALE=rubbish is treated the same as blank QUALITY_SCALE. (And I think we decided that it would be triggered by {{{class}}} in that case?) Back tomorrow — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 21:26, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
Okay, I'm going for it now. I've no idea how to make the transition clean, so I'm just going to load them all up in different tabs and try to save at the same time! — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:13, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
Seems to be working fine. I've put a tracking cat on the taskforce hook to find places where QUALITY_SCALE needs to be changed. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:14, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

Do you think we should employ a bot to get the syntax updated on these banner templates? If so, do you think you could write the program? Or shall we ask someone like Xeno to help us? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 16:04, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

Add the following to your global.js or monobook.js and you'll then have a qscale tab which would speed up the editing of those banners with FULL_QUALITY_SCALE = yes
function queryString(p) {
    var re = RegExp('[&?]' + p + '=([^&]*)');
    var matches;
    if (matches = re.exec(document.location)) {
        try {
            return decodeURI(matches[1]);
        } catch (e) { }
    }
    return null;
}

//Add a 'qscale edit' tab
if(wgNamespaceNumber != -1 && wgArticleId != 0) {
    addOnloadHook( function qscaleEditButton() {
        addPortletLink('p-cactions',
                       wgScript + '?title=' + encodeURIComponent(wgPageName) + '&action=edit&qscale=true',
                       'qscale',
                       'p-qscale',
                       'QUALITY_SCALE edit');
    }
)}

if(wgAction == 'edit' && queryString('qscale') == 'true') {
    addOnloadHook(function qscale() {
        var idx1 = 0;
        var idx2 = 0;
        var myContent = document.getElementById('wpTextbox1').value;

	var re = new RegExp("\\\n +\\\|FULL_QUALITY_SCALE \+\= \+yes\\\n", "")
        myContent = myContent.replace(re,'\n');

        if(document.getElementById('wpTextbox1').value != myContent) {
           idx1 = myContent.indexOf("\|QUALITY_SCALE");
           idx1 = myContent.indexOf("yes",idx1);
           myContent = myContent.substring(0,idx1)+"extended"+myContent.substring(idx1+3,+myContent.length);

           document.getElementById('wpTextbox1').value=myContent;
           document.getElementById('wpSummary').value='set QUALITY_SCALE = extended and remove FULL_QUALITY_SCALE parameter, as per new syntax';
        };
    }
)}

Only protected & sandbox versions left in Category:WikiProject banners with formatting errors now. -- WOSlinker (talk) 20:52, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
I'm getting the qscale tab, but pressing it doesn't seem to do anything :S — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 21:00, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
When you are viewing one of the banners, press the qscale tab and it will then edit the article and fill in the summary. You can then press Show changes if you want to see what's changed or just press Save page to save the changes. -- WOSlinker (talk) 21:43, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
Are you using IE? It works with Firefox but doesn't work with IE. -- WOSlinker (talk) 21:48, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
I've updated the code above to work with IE now, but it now leaves a blank line rather than removing the line. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:01, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
I must be doing something wrong. All the link does is to bring up the edit window. It doesn't make any edits or fill in the summary for me. I'm using FF3.5. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 23:37, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
I've spotted why. I'd missed out the querystring function which was further up in my monobook file. I've added it to the code about & change it back to the FF version. -- WOSlinker (talk) 08:07, 19 September 2009 (UTC)
Thanks! It's working now. I'll have to learn how to use these script things, they seem very useful. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:09, 19 September 2009 (UTC)
I'm no expert either, it sometimes takes a few attempt to get things working. -- WOSlinker (talk) 09:55, 19 September 2009 (UTC)
Well, if you want another challenge, a script to synchronise a sandbox template would be very useful :) — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:02, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

I noticed that you recently changed another QUALITY_PAGE=subpage (e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:WPBeatles&diff=prev&oldid=315143866). Is that because it only just turned up in the tracking category? Or did it escape the category somehow? I ask because I was planning to remove the code for "yes" shortly but don't want to mess anything up! — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 22:18, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

I did the following search to see what templates contained the word FULL_QUALITY_SCALE and then did a tidy up of some of them. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:34, 20 September 2009 (UTC)
You need to make sure that the three hooks: hooks/taskforces, hooks/qualimpintersect and hooks/qualitycats have all got tracking on them. Haven't checked myself. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:37, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

Sorry I just realised that I've messed up your recent edits to Template:WPBannerMeta/templatepage/checkcat. I'll try to fix them up soon. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 13:52, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi, can you help me to get this working? Thanks — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:55, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

CSD tagging

Template:Adminstats/Rjanag, which you tagged for speedy deletion, is in use (I use it for User:Rjanag/adminbars/Rjanag) and is not out of date (it's updated by SoxBot every few days, as are all of the Template:Adminstats subpages, of which there are hundreds...the last time this template of mine was updated was just 3 days ago). rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 21:08, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

Now that I look more closely, I see you've mass-tagged a whole bunch of adminstats templates. Some of these really are out of date (one hasn't been updated since October 2008, I assume becuase the user has been inactive), but a lot probably are not. Since these templates are practically userpages (they're in the template namespace, but are made by and for individual users) I would suggest you roll back all of those CSD taggings and let the templates be deleted individually (for example, only when a user requests it for his own template, or only when a user is known to be officially retired). rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 21:10, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
Sorry about that. I only tagged those listed on User:RussBot/Orphaned_templates/001 after checking the first 10. Didn't check the rest in as much detail. -- WOSlinker (talk) 21:12, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

WP:CHINA Banner Conversion

Hey, I noticed your efforts to convert WP:CHINA's talk page banner to the standardized format, and I wanted to thank you. I tried to do the conversion myself a while back, but I have no idea what I'm doing. Whatever you do, though, the new banner really needs to replicate all of the functions of the old. If functionality is lost, I suspect that it would be difficult for our project to accept.

Incidentally, I've seen some projects that have banners that can detect when they are in a non-article namespace and automatically assess accordingly. (For example, a banner placed on a category talk page is automatically assessed as Category) Do you know how to implement this? Thanks again for your help, and if you do need me to step in and work on the banner, just let me know.--Danaman5 (talk) 10:23, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

There still a little bit to do on the conversion as I haven't managed to add all the parameters yet. This new format already has the automatic assessment of non-article namespace banners built in to it. I can finish it off today and then it would be great if you could do a bit of testing with it to see if it all works properly. -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:17, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
Right, I think it's all done now & ready to test. -- WOSlinker (talk) 19:46, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

I've had a quick look and noticed a few things:

  • Current banner does not appear to support Project-Class, but does support Needed-Class.
  • Even though it is suppoorted in the current banner, per Wikipedia:WikiProject China/Assessment the project does not use A-Class. Last I checked they also didn't use C-Class, though that at least may have changed. Maybe seek clarification from the project here? PC78 (talk) 09:26, 24 September 2009 (UTC)
  • Project-class is indeed unused. I have switched it off for now.
  • Needed-class doesn't seem to be used. The empty category was deleted back in March.
  • It seems that A- and C-class are used ... anyway if the project decides they don't want them, it's easy enough to disable them later.
— Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:58, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

I've made a few tweaks. Just a couple of very minor points:

  • Why do we have two /hooks/notes of three. We can up to 10 with these.
  • As the main template included support for the Tibet subproject, perhaps the transclusion of {{WikiProject Tibet}} is redundant here? (No doubt there is some politics involved with this ...)

— Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:21, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

We do use C-Class, and although we don't really use A class, you might as well just leave it switched on, in case we decide to do something with it later. We don't really use project class or needed class. Project pages currently get classified as "NA".--Danaman5 (talk) 13:58, 24 September 2009 (UTC)
Template:WPBannerMeta/hooks/notes only supports 5 more notes which is why I added two hooks of 3 each. -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:00, 24 September 2009 (UTC)
Also, with Tibet, I'm just trying to match what is currently in the banner. Tibet is added as a separate banner above China there, so I've done the same in the sandbox. The only other tibet code is just to set the categories, so I've moved that up into the Tibet banner. -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:06, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

Danaman5, would you mind creating the necessary categories? They are shown on this and this version. Thanks — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:33, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

Done.--Danaman5 (talk) 09:28, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
Brilliant. So in that case, the sandbox version is ready to be moved over. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:42, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
  Done. I was waiting for you to move it over ... but as you didn't I've gone ahead. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:56, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, I was procrastinating because I was wondering if I should notify the project first. I think it'll be fine though. Thanks for all the help!--Danaman5 (talk) 14:31, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Want to delete?

Hello. You know, it would save a lot of time if you deleted these out-of-use pages yourself. Ah but you're not an admin you say? Have you ever thought about changing that state of things? wink wink nudge nudge... Pascal.Tesson (talk) 19:34, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

I've thought about it a little but haven't taken it any further yet. Editing protected templates would be something I'd use it more for though rather than doing lots of deletes. -- WOSlinker (talk) 20:21, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

Help?

Hey WOSlinker, haven't seen you for a while, hope you're okay. Would you be interested in helping to add some functionality to the India sandbox? See Template talk:WP India for what needs doing. Thanks! — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:37, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

I've just been busy with other things. Is it just the quality intersects for taskforces that need adding? -- WOSlinker (talk) 17:47, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
Yes, and the tfnested hooks I think. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 18:33, 11 October 2009 (UTC)
Ok, I've added the qualimpintersect to all the taskforces. The current banner deosn't show any taskfoces when nested, so is the tfnested hook needed? -- WOSlinker (talk) 19:32, 11 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. I just shuffled some around a bit, because the TF_HOOK thing only works from the taskforce hook currently. And I've asked on the talk page about the nested text. And, if you have any more free time, there's Category:WikiProject British Royalty articles needing banner conversion :) Once this is empty we can convert the biography banner. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:22, 11 October 2009 (UTC)
And thanks again. Umm, SUPPRESS_NA_CLASS doesn't seem to be working on India. Could you investigate? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:46, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
Seems to be working as expected when I looked at it. Have you got an example? -- WOSlinker (talk) 15:41, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
See Template talk:WP India/sandbox/testcases. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:48, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
All I can see there is a lot of NA-importance. No NA-Class. SUPPRESS_NA_CLASS only suppresses NA-Class. -- WOSlinker (talk) 16:10, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Okay, so I'm being a bit stupid. Would there be any point in having a SUPPRESS_NA_IMPORTANCE parameter? Or shall I just create all those categories? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 16:21, 12 October 2009 (UTC)

Done a version in Template:WPBannerMeta/hooks/qualimpintersect/core/sandbox with SUPPRESS_NA_IMPORTANCE. -- WOSlinker (talk) 16:15, 12 October 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for that. I was wondering if it was better to put it on /formats rather than passing through the importance mask twice? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 16:29, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
yes, that would be fine. -- WOSlinker (talk) 16:35, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
Still can't get it to work :( — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 22:56, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
Fixed. It was a missing bracket ([13]) -- WOSlinker (talk) 07:05, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
Arghhh! Thanks. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:51, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

I notice that has been going round adding what seems to be a simpler version of the substitution test, e.g. here. Would this work for WPBM? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:47, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

Hmmm, You could use that code as is instead of having a substcheck parameter in WPBannerMeta, or you could change the substcheck parameter to:

|substcheck={{#ifeq:{{NAMESPACE}}|{{<includeonly>subst:</includeonly>NAMESPACE}}|<includeonly>SUBST</includeonly>|}}

which is a bit longer than the current thing we use

|substcheck=<includeonly>{{subst:</includeonly><includeonly>substcheck}}</includeonly>

Edward German

Hi. I see you have added a TOC to the Edward German talk page, but I can't access the items in the TOC. Was there some kind of review of the Edward German article? If so, I'd like to see the comments. If not, what is this TOC linking to? Thanks! -- Ssilvers (talk) 21:08, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

You need to expand the banners and then expand the comments section within the banners to see the review. The review was done in February 2009. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:46, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
The review is actually at Talk:Edward German/Comments and is just transcluded by the banners into the main talk page. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:47, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Inkscape & svg files

Regarding the svg issue you helped me with the other week (if you recall), I was wondering how I could avoid such issues in the future. Presumably it's something I'm doing when I save a file in Inkscape? PC78 (talk) 22:44, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

I don't know as I've never used Inkscape but I'm guessing that there might be some option somewhere to show/hide the grid. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:46, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

Appreciate it

Thanks a lot for tidying the template and user box I made. I really have no clue about how to code them and kinda copied a base, still learning here. Could you please help me with tips on how to make sure the pages I edit are assessed automatically? Please do respond in my own talk page since it'll be easier for me to keep track of the conversation. In turn I'll post here. I really need someone to help me figure out all the small details of editing! Veritiel (talk) 00:56, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the help again. What would you recommend and what would the difference be? As I'm still not sure I understand how the rating works, I don't know if it's made by a bot or by voting of the project's member since I have seem to have found hints that could be either. I posted a request, but just want to check that I'm actually doing something that will help the articles. Veritiel (talk) 12:10, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

If the bot assigns the same class, B in this case, to all the articles with the paraguay Banner, how can I raise an article's class from B to A or GA? Does a bot do it or does it ahve to be done manually after a voting? Veritiel (talk) 18:58, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the help! But then the method of deciding which article gets a higher class, as I had said, goes from being a B article to an A article, is not done by a bot ro by wikipedia, but the users in the WikiProject have to vote on it, a bit like when nomitating and deciding if an article becomes featured or not right? Veritiel (talk) 19:11, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for all your help! I won't change the class, I deem it a bit unethical for me to change the class of an article I edited, so I will elave that to other users. Bad thing is, not many people out there interested in Paraguay or Paraguayan history and the Project seems to be a ghost one. Veritiel (talk) 19:21, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Modification of my Talk page.

WOSlinker:

It is a violation of Wikipedia policy (constitutes vandalism) for you to remove material from my Talk page. Please refrain from this act. William R. Buckley (talk) 02:39, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

The proper tack was to inform me of some User Page content inconsistent with other Wikipedia rules. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. The templates were create long ago, and the corresponding categories were deleted long ago. In the corresponding discussion, no mention was made of such rules. I do understand that the category was deleted. That does not mean that I cannot have a template on my User Page which describes the history of my association with educational institutions. Now, if those templates bring problems elsewhere in Wikipedia, then I am happy to adjust them so as to alleviate those problems. Is this the purpose of your edits? William R. Buckley (talk) 17:56, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
There is no problem using templates on your user page. It's just that your userpage shouldn't be in Category:School user templates as your userpage is not a school user template, it's just using templates. I didn't inform you first before making the change as there are quite a few userpages with similar issues and it would be too much to keep track of them all. Also, can you point me in the direction of the Wikipedia policy you mention so that I can read a bit more about it. Thanks. -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:14, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
I think the relevant issue is expressed here; vandalism is perhaps too strong a word. Cheers. William R. Buckley (talk) 19:46, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

Where do I edit WikiProject banner, revised w/ WPBannerMeta?

Thanks for updating the {{ArabEntrep banner}}, using {{WPBannerMeta}}. Quick question: how or where do I go to make a minor revision to the banner text? (I just want to wiki-link entrepreneurship.) Thanks!

Done. :) PC78 (talk) 13:30, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

Scandalous omission

Martin and PC78 are both quite right. By scandalous omission, I failed to give you due credit for being the Third HalfTM of the unstoppable WPBM team. WPIndia is an awesome achievement, as is WPBiography. I wish I could have been a bigger part of them.

WPCHINA

Hi- would it be possible, when you have a chance, to fix the {{WPCHINA}} template so it will use the upper case "Unknown-importance" in the quality-intersect categories? Thanks --Funandtrvl (talk) 21:59, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

I've made the change in the sandbox (details here). MSGJ or another admin can change the template. I've put an editprotected request on the template talk page. -- WOSlinker (talk) 23:05, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

Deletion of Category:Category suppression-supporting templates without notice

Hi. It sure would have been nice if you had left me a note on my talk page about this discussion. I was the person who created the category years ago (back when category suppression was still in its infancy). Upon deletion of the category, it caused a ripple effect that messed up quite a bit of documentation (WP:CATSUP, which is the unofficial official guidelines for the practice, for one). Because of the category deletion, a bot went through and mangled the page--a page which is referenced on more than just the English Wikipedia by the way.

I'm not sure if I agree with the reasons for the deletion. I do agree that including some of the most commonly used meta templates that support the feature would flood the category. And, in practicality, all templates that auto-categorize probably should use one of the category suppression methods currently in use. Thus, IF all the templates were using the feature properly, the category would become useless. That isn't the case, and the category did have the use of helping novice templaters locate the how-to and why-do instructions so that new non-standard forms of category suppression don't grow out of control (as nearly happened prior to the category, the instructions, and finally the standardized meta templates were developed). Sadly, since I didn't know about the discussion until after I saw the deletion log entry for the category, I didn't get to chime in on the discussion and bring up the truly pertinent points before it was deleted after only 3 people weighed in--none of whom, I think, were involved with the project in the beginning.

Your thoughts after hearing mine? Please respond on my page or leave me a talkback notice there. Thanks! —Willscrlt “Talk” ) 12:53, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

I'm sorry you missed the discussion. I put it up for discussion with a choice of delete or populate with most of the templates using {{WPBannerMeta}}, {{Asbox}} and some of {{Userbox}}, {{Userbox-2}} and {{Userbox-r}}. There was less than 200 templates in that category and if it is to be used properly then it should probably contain over 15,000, but I don't know how useful it would have been. You should consider adding a request at Wikipedia:Deletion review and add your points about the reasons for the category if you want to resurrect it. -- WOSlinker (talk) 19:23, 12 November 2009 (UTC)
I don't frequent XfDs on en.wiki unless they are related to something I've worked on... there are just too many to keep track of! (I do a bit better on Commons, but only a little.) I have been considering a Deletion Review, but before I do that, I am working with another person to revamp the Category Supression process (templating it to make it easier and more standardized) and the documentation for it. If we figure out a really compelling reason for needing the categories again, then I will initiate the DR; otherwise, it's probably an idea that has outgrown its original usefulness from back when they were oddities instead of fairly common. It sounds like you would be open to consideration of reimplementing the cats (or something like them) if we have need for doing so in the future? Line break

I'm wondering where the extra line space is coming from on Talk:Megatokyo. Can you help? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 03:10, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

This fixed it. Also, removing the talkspace detect warning from the banner works, see Template:Comicsproj/sandbox3, so the real problem is in there somewhere. I'll take a look later on. -- WOSlinker (talk) 07:50, 12 November 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. I was thinking it would be nice if Template:Inactive WikiProject banner could populate Category:Inactive WikiProject banners but without Category:WikiProject banners without quality assessment. I can't think of any easy way to do that though ... — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 21:18, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
I think this should do it. -- WOSlinker (talk) 23:17, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
Thanks again. That looks like the easiest way to do that. Even better might be to only set category=no when FULLPAGENAME=BANNER_NAME; I might look into that. I've got a nice coding problem for you on Template talk:Class mask. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 18:03, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

RIT userbox

Hi, WOSlinker. Re: this edit, the "R·I·T" text on the left-hand side of the userbox should not be bolded. Is there a way to prevent it from being bolded using the userbox template? The syntax is a bit on the convoluted side. Powers T 13:47, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

I've removed the bold. Thanks for pointing out the issue. -- WOSlinker (talk) 13:50, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

Class mask/templatepage‎

Hi, if you get a chance could you look at Template:Class mask/templatepage‎? I've been trying to code it so that the current system (with {{{file-image}}}) works but so it will also work with separate {{{file}}} and {{{image}}} parameters. I admit that the logic has defeated me and it's not quite right yet. Thanks! — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:16, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

Template:User Featured articles

Hello. Earlier today you added a "nocat" feature to Template:User Featured articles. How does it work? I tried both {{User Featured articles|2|nocat}} and {{User Featured articles|2|nocat=yes}} and neither seemed to remove the page from Category:Wikipedia Featured Article contributors. The page in question is User:Malik Shabazz/Articles. Thanks for your help. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 23:02, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

It only works with |nocat=true -- WOSlinker (talk) 23:30, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
Thank you very much. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 23:34, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Template:User BRUIN ALUM

In an edit from September 2009, you inadvertently removed the "nocat" functionality of this template (diff) but you restored that functionality in January 2010 without even being asked (diff). Thank you for that repair.  –Newportm (talkcontribs) 07:02, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

WOSlinker removing template parameters set to 0?

See this diff. If the bot is set to do this, I'd suggest disabling that feature, because sometimes parameters have a default non-zero setting and explicitly setting them to zero has its uses. Just FYI. Thanks. Equazcion (talk) 19:30, 12 Jan 2010 (UTC)

It's not a bot that did that, it was a manual edit. It didn't look that much different without those parameters. I've re-done the edit and left in the id-h=0 and id-w=0. I've removed id-op=0 as that is invalid as id-op only works with CSS settings. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:14, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
If you look at your original revision there was a tiny sliver of whitespace on the left between the image and the border. I'm anal I know :) At any rate I understand what happened and thanks for the response. Equazcion (talk) 22:29, 12 Jan 2010 (UTC)

{{Lexortest}}

I declined the speedy for a single reason: this obviously began as a test, but it seems like it would be a useful template if we renamed it. What would you think of renaming it and listing it on a subpage of Wikipedia:Template messages? By the way, I'm curious — how did you find such an obscure template? Please reply at my talk. Nyttend (talk) 21:49, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

It's not my template; I'm not Lexor. Thanks for the explanation; I've posted a question at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Templates. Nyttend (talk) 22:22, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Templates on Merge

A template you have worked on Template:WikiProject Unreferenced Article Cleanup is part of a merge under discussion at Wikipedia talk:Unreferenced articles. Current discussion favors the merge of the project with the templates Wikipedia:WikiProject Unreferenced Article Cleanup into Wikipedia:Unreferenced articles and bringing the two templates over. If the merge is accepted (seems likely) it would seem some changes to the two templates Template:WikiProject Unreferenced Article Cleanup & Template:WUAC Invite would be required. Do you have any thoughts on what would be most appropriate? Jeepday (talk) 14:50, 17 January 2010 (UTC)

My main reason for editing that template was in relation to work with {{WPBannerMeta}}. As to changes for Template:WikiProject Unreferenced Article Cleanup, that should be quite easy to do as most things can be accomodated by {{WPBannerMeta}}. The template isn't used that much at the moment though with only 415 occurences. -- WOSlinker (talk) 16:18, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
Thank you Jeepday (talk) 11:51, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

UBX category cleanup

I reverted [14] and [15] because they changed the behavior of the template. This specific UBX is supposed to replace migrated UBXes and classify the templates themselves in Category:Wikipedia_GUS_userboxesTheDJ (talkcontribs) 01:35, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

Ok, thanks for letting me know. -- WOSlinker (talk) 19:22, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

Friendly complaint

I'm not here to complaint because you are more than likely using a script or bot, which becomes a rod for edit count, but if this is how your editing behavior is going to work, I ask you to please assess these changes manually. I have noticed various errors in your process of editing, such as this edit that changed the link from Commons:FP to Wikipedia:FP, along with other edits from you in the Portal space. For this reason I have reverted all your edits relevant to these. If I see more of this, I will be potentially inclined to send this to the admin's noticeboard. You do a good job, but these type of errors could go unnoticed and you would be doing the exact opposite of what you are intended to do here. Good luck and cheers, --ZooFari 22:14, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

I was using Special:ExpandTemplates and I think I must have copied and pasted to the wrong page as I had a few tabs open. Sorry for that. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:18, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

No big deal, just expect more of this being a WikiGnome :-). If you wish to fix those errors, they are conveniently grouped in my contribs. Cheers, --ZooFari 22:22, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

Hopewellian peoples

I'm wondering about the purpose of this edit [16] and this edit [17]. The no cat qualifier is one I haven't run across and I'm wondering about the purpose of these additions. Heironymous Rowe (talk) 19:00, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

The reason was due to Category:Hopewellian peoples being on the Wikipedia:Database reports/Self-categorized categories report. Generally categories should not be categorised into themselves. -- WOSlinker (talk) 19:36, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
I believe this is confusion caused by the template:Hopewellian peoples which is in the category:Hopewellian peoples. Is there code I can add to the template that puts it in this category but doesnt add the cat in itself problem? Heironymous Rowe (talk) 19:42, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
The two edits I did do that. -- WOSlinker (talk) 19:45, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
Ok, sorry, was just something I hadn't encountered before and was confused. Thanks for the explanation and catching my fubar. Heironymous Rowe (talk) 19:54, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Amazon compacting

I noticed the bot compacting amazon.com links on Doctor Who DVD releases and I'm just wondering about the amazon.co.uk links. Couldn't the bot companct those as well? -- WOSlinker (talk) 19:49, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi WOS. Absolutely, the amazon regular expression does in fact match any of the Amazon country URLs, but the script I'm using got confused by some nesting of templates or tags or quoting or something else on the page, and conservatively decided not to touch things it didn't understand in case it broke them. I'll have a look at it and see if I can figure out what's going on.
Cheers, CmdrObot (talk) 19:55, 7 March 2010 (UTC)
It seems as though if it's just a URL in a <ref> tag then the bot doesn't compact it. -- WOSlinker (talk) 19:58, 7 March 2010 (UTC)
Actually, it's more to do with the fact that the amazon URLs inside <refs> aren't in [[links]]. I've added a special case to handle that now though. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Cheers, CmdrObot (talk) 20:47, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Template:Substituted

Hi, long time no see. I was a bit curious about this template.

  • What is its purpose, actually?
  • Would it be neater to put on a /doc page rather than having two noinclude sections on a template?

Regards — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:26, 14 March 2010 (UTC)

I think it's main use is for when someone comes along and checks the "What links here" option and sees that a template has no transclusions and then decides to put the page up for deletion at WP:TFD. It just helps them to see that there is a reason for no transclusions.
While some of those templates I tagged do have transclusions, those with documentation tend to state that the template should be substituted, so I decided to tag them all, even if some transclusions existed.
Yes, It would be neater to put on a /doc page where those exist. -- WOSlinker (talk) 17:33, 14 March 2010 (UTC)

As you had already setup all the categories, it was just a case of waiting for a bot to collate the data. It's now available at User:WP 1.0 bot/Tables/Project/Curling and also at [18]. -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:41, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

Listing userboxes

Hi, per Wikipedia:Templates for discussion#What not to propose for discussion here, I have moved your nominations from WP:TFD to WP:MFD. Userbox category

Hi, WOSlinker. I was wondering why you have made a number of edits recently removing Category:Userboxes from userboxes? I would understand if you were moving them to other categories, but it appears that you are just removing, sometimes leaving the page uncategorized. --RL0919 (talk) 16:27, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Idally, yes it would be better to put them into a more sitable category., and I have been doing that in some cases, but also leaving them in Category:Userboxes doesn't serve much of a purpose either. The ones in the template space may eventually show up in Wikipedia:Database reports/Uncategorized templates but it's limited to 1000 records, so only goes as far a Ct the moment. -- WOSlinker (talk) 16:32, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
At least being in the userbox category is a start. They should be diffused from there, but making them uncategorized is a step backwards. --RL0919 (talk) 16:39, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

I can understand why you tagged it for speedy, but...

... see Template talk:Todoedit2. I checked, and it's still in use. Peter 21:39, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Help required, if you have any time

Hi WOS, do you think the current versions of Template:WPBannerMeta/class/sandbox and Template:Class mask/sandbox would work well together? Do you agree that it be neater and less confusing to do all the work with B-class checklist parameters on the latter template, rather than partially on each as happens now? I think the only loss would be to custom masks which are using a B-class checklist but not {{class mask}} and I don't think there are many of them, if any. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:15, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Seems ok, although I haven't really tested it. Before implementing it, would need to check those banners using B-class checklists and custom classes to pass though the parameters correctly. A new tracking category, Category:WPBannerMeta templates with B-class checklists might be useful. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:41, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
Yes indeed, I'll start looking through those shortly. I think [19] works well for finding the uses of checklists. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:24, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
  Done, for all banners using B-class checklists and {{class mask}} on a /class subpage. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:50, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your help debugging my code. It would be even more helpful if you were an admin. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:57, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
