Category:Films directed by Wolfgang Becker edit

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: Rename Category:Films directed by Wolfgang Becker to Category:Films directed by Wolfgang Becker (director, born 1954), per nom, to match article title. - jc37 02:42, 3 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: rename, aligning with Wolfgang Becker (director, born 1954). An alternative rename was opposed at WP:CFDS. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:46, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Sprachraum, Armbrust, and Good Olfactory: pinging contributors to speedy discussion. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:49, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose this version and instead propose Category:Films directed by Wolfgang Becker (born 1954) – which was my original proposed name change at Speedy Rename. That is what should be discussed here, because no-one engaged on the actual merits of that name at the previous discussion. It was opposed solely because it doesn't meet the exact C2D speedy criteria.

To sum up: Wolfgang Becker (director, born 1954) used to be at Wolfgang Becker, which is now a DAB page, since there is another German film director of this name: Wolfgang Becker (director, born 1910) – who I had moved from his previous name page Wolfgang Becker (editor) – see (DAB-discussion here). Obviously a new category name is warranted; there were four films from WB (* 1954) in it, and one from WB (* 1910), before I came along.

My naming choice keeps it simpler, since "Films directed by" already makes the "director" part clear. Repeating that in the parentheses is redundant. I looked at over 500 existing category names of film directors to see how they deal with a "director" disambiguation, and the vast majority of similar cases don't include (director) in the category name, e.g.: Films directed by Mike Mitchell, Films directed by George Marshall, Films directed by Robert Stevenson, Films directed by Michael Anderson, Films directed by John Glen and Films directed by Zhang Yang – I could go on. There are a couple of examples for the redundant version, like Category:Films directed by Scott Sanders (director), but these are far less common. There doesn't seem to be a fixed rule on this, or at least no-one is combing through these categories and changing names in order to conform to one standard only. If such a standard were to be set up, I would also support the less redundant version. --Sprachraum (talk) 23:52, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • There are some exceptions and possibly they simply have been overlooked but the default is to align with the main article. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:27, 6 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename per Nom favor matching the main article per WP:C2D. (Alt Rename per Sprachraum is still better than the current name though.) - RevelationDirect (talk) 01:28, 6 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Agree that alt rename per Sprachraum is still better than the current name. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:27, 6 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Category:School districts in Australia edit

The result of the discussion was: delete (non-admin closure) Marcocapelle (talk) 13:00, 13 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: "School districts" don't exist in Australia in the sense that they exist in other countries like the US. In Australia, public schools are run by the state governments. The state governments do setup various regional administrative structures, but those are completely non-notable, few people outside of school staff and bureaucrats pay attention to them. Very different from the US, where school districts have elections and levy taxes and public meetings – these regional admin structures are essentially just a group of managerial and administrative staff who look after government-run schools in a given area. And then only thrown in here is an article about Catholic schools in a single diocese – are dioceses of the Catholic Church "school districts"? The Catholic Church runs a lot of schools worldwide, and many (but not all) of these schools are owned by the dioceses. Anyway, I get the impression this category is motivated by "America has X so every other country must too", which isn't true. I think this category makes no sense and should be deleted. That "crud" is an established category tree. Dimadick (talk) 19:45, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've gotten stuff like it deleted many times before, because it's not defining, and being defining is something that a category must be. You seeing many bad examples of categorization does not make it "an established category tree" that should continue to exist. Categories should either be "Films about foo" or "Foo films".★Trekker (talk) 19:50, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Neither of these formats helps with character filmographies. Dimadick (talk) 19:56, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
What part of "categories need to be defining" is it that you don't grasp? Something "featuring foo" does not imply defining, tons of works feature tons of random stuff, that doesn't make them about that thing.★Trekker (talk) 20:03, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: merge per WP:SMALLCAT, this concerns categorization by 3rd and 4th level administrative divisions of Greece, leading to a endless series of single-article or 2-article categories. The proposal is to merge to 2nd level administrative division, except cities and larger towns, in this case except Katerini (58,000 people). This is follow-up on this earlier nomination. Nominator's rationale: Per WP:NONDEFINING (WP:OVERLAPCAT, WP:PERFCAT and WP:OCAWARD)
The Order of Duke Branimir is a Croation award for international relations. There are definitely a wide range of people in this category: Sir Fitzroy Maclean had a close relationship with the country and might be defined by the award while US Senator Orrin Hatch seems to have received it because he was friends with a Croatian basketball player in college (official press release). In between those extremes, it's often given to foreign ambassadors of friendly nations who are already somewhere under Category:Ambassadors to Croatia.
The award was also given to the entire 2018 Croatian FIFA World Cup team while the reasons for other domestic recipients are obscure. The articles generally mention the award in passing with other honours. Nominator's rationale: WP:NONDEFINING (WP:OCAWARD, WP:PERFCAT)
When royalty and other officials visited Iran, the Order of the Crown (Iran) was given out as souvenir. Olav V of Norway, King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain, and Fuad I of Egypt are not remotely defined by the award. (There are also a few high ranking people from Iran like the Shah, Prime Minister Hossein Ala', and Imam Aga Khan IV but they tend to mention the award in passing with other honours.)
