Wellington Meetup 11 June 2022 edit

    Note this video conferencing software link will ask permission to use your computer camera and microphone. You will need to agree to get full functionality. Google Chrome or Chromium is recommended for the best experience (not all aspects work correctly with other browsers).
  • Bring (if meeting under Alert Level ORANGE or GREEN): a laptop if you have one. There are publicly available computers if you don't have a laptop.

Venue edit

Under COVID Alert Level Orange or Green the group meet at the He Matapihi Molesworth Library within the National Library. This is a Wellington City Council pop up public library. It was formerly The National Library net.work space. Drinks are permitted in the library. Under COVID Alert Level Red the group meet via video conference call.

Meetup Code of Conduct and Anonymity when Meeting Via Video Conference edit

All attendees are expected to understand and abide by the Draft Universal Code of Conduct for the Wikimedia Movement.

The video conferencing meetup is a replacement for the in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.

Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.

If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:

Welcome new attendee. This group respects your right to remain anonymous. This group has a policy of discouraging lurking as it makes some of us uncomfortable. If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you've been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.
If you're not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that's okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link in the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.
If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That's the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don't want to contribute during the video call.
If you're not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.

If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.

If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.

2. Round table for participants to say what you’re working on

  • Noracrentiss - Rosemary Seymour article is still progressing as well as a lot of administration for the Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand.
  • Marshelec has joined the Wikipedia Critter of the Week group and has been working on Pennantia baylisiana article. Mentioned a Youtube video documenting it. Encouraged others to join in. Has also been working on the Farewell spit article and has encouraged another lapsed editor to come back to do an article on the Farewell spit lighthouse.
  • Gertrude206 - Has been uploading photos to WikiCommons and creating new categories. Needs help and information on how to do this properly.
  • Ambrosia10 - attending the SPNHC2022 conference, advocated for Wikipedia and Wikidata including attending a workshop to support new editors to Wikidata who were adding specimen collectors. Had discussion about impact with Einebillion as she is wanting to attend conference next year in person, Einebillion to discuss impact model with her. Also moth work for #1Lib1Ref, mix'n'match work. Also been working with some American biodiversity folk planning a workshop for under graduate teachers with the aim to create teaching resources about "Revealing Hidden Figures within Natural History Collections through Data Sleuthing". See this page for more information.
  • Einebillion Discussed Te Papa workflow for releasing images as she was requested to work on the extinct bird article, improving it with Te Papa's image and updating the wikidata entry. Has also been working on new meeting pages for meetups. Majority of work has been on committee outputs including drafting the strategy document for Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand and getting it ready for community consultation. Also working to promote Wikipedia editing with Te Papa specialists. User:Stitchbird2 is working hard on Forget-me-nots. User:Ambrosia10 promised to help with interlinking via Wikidata and Wikicommons. User:Avocadobabygirl Te Papa's Digital Channels Outreach Manager is setting up a pilot project working to bulk upload images to Commons using Open Refine. 200 images of forgetmenots to tie in with User:Stitchbird2 work and working with the Open Refine update project team.


3. Progress on Action Points and future events

Don't forget to add your program to the Dashboard. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years. Participants had a discussion about the proposed Wellington WikiCon. The Australian WikiCon is being held in November. Funding timing is July to June for Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand. We need to think about whether we do Wellington conference. User:Ambrosia10 will reach out to Tim Park at Otari Wilton Bush about using the Leonard Cockayne Centre - 25 seat venue. Questions to ask Tim - how much for venue? The most important thing is the Wifi? We need to consider the aims of the WikiCon - new editors? Theme? Perhaps a natural environment themed Wikicon? Dates - Saturday/Sunday. Ada Lovelace Day editathon is on 14 - 15 October, November is the Australian Wikicon which will have Wellington attendees so perhaps 2023, maybe February as a proposed date?
Also a discussion on increasing impact and getting new editors, how to improve onboarding newbies, discussed strategy on what we as a user group do to encourage new attendees. How to contact and whether we can make automatic reachout.
  • 2022 October Ada Lovelace Editathon, Wellington Pakoire will work with AtticEdit organising. Tentatively scheduled for weekend of 14/15 October. Still to confirm date and times. Update?
