Welcome to WikiProject Dogs/Dog photos task force, a task force for managing photos of dogs on Wikipedia.

Purpose edit

  1. Move all dog photos currently located on Wikipedia to Commons and categorize there.
  2. Keep track of such photos until they have been moved to Commons.

Scope edit

All photos of dogs or specifically related to dogs (doghouses, etc.)

Rationale and background edit

Wikipedia itself seems to discourage the categorization or gallerizing (turning into galleries) of photos, yet continues to allow people to upload photos here, which they have always done and continue to do prodigiously. Hence, we have no way at all of keeping track of dog-related photos.

The original dog-breeds project started doing this by creating galleries of all dog photos uploaded to Wikipedia and sorting them by breeds, whether or not the images were placed in articles:

  3. Wikipedia:List of images/Nature/Animals/Dogs/Breeds3

  5. Wikipedia:List of images/Nature/Animals/Dogs/Breeds5
  6. Wikipedia:List of images/Nature/Animals/Dogs/Misc1

but these pages were deleted in 2007.

This suggestion led me to believe that moving the album pages under the auspices of this project--which I have now done under differnt names (Feb 8 2008)--at least will enable us to keep track of such photos (especially if project members take a moment to add any newly uploaded photos to the list) and have an easy way of finding them to move them to Commons. (Which , as of Feb 2008, I believe is still a one-at-a-time manual process of downloading to your own system, uploading to commons, then copying and pasting all the info from the original photo to commons, then deleting the original photo...)

  • Make first pass through existing albums restored Feb 8 2008 and remove photos that are already in Commons.
  • Move photos in albums to Dog images on WikiMedia Commons if they haven't already been.
  • Remove photos from albums if/when they're moved to Commons
  • Add any Wikipedia-located photos to albums until moved to Commons.
