South Park, Houston article edit

At the South Park, Houston article, I put:

"Chuck Philips of the Los Angeles Times said in 1993 that South Park was "a tough Houston ghetto dominated by drug-dealing, prostitution and gang warfare-where automatic rifles can be..."" with the source: Philips, Chuck. But I cannot use Google News to find the rest of the sentence. I tried to get it to show the rest of the sentence, but I could not. Who is an LA Times subscriber or can access the LA Times from a library database? Mayors of San Francisco edit

I am writing List of mayors of San Francisco and require access to a book Biographical dictionary of American mayors, 1820-1980 by Melvin G. Holli, Peter d'Alroy Jones to verify party affiliations for each mayor as well as Maurice Carey Blake (one of the mayors) in particular on the year he served as California State Assemblyman. Hi all, I'm looking for the fulltext of "AFRICA-POLITICS: RWANDA'S REVENGE", IPS News Wire, A. Lama, Jul. 11, 1996 as previewed here: [2]. Highbeam offers a 7-day free trial, but a few screens in they casually ask for a credit card number "just in case" - that's usually where I click the X to make screen disappear now. I'm trying to straighten out just what the heck the neologism "Lima syndrome" actually means, so if anyone wants to research the term more generally, excluding the thousands of Wikipedia mirrors, that would be great too. I've downloaded that article, thank you very much, but it doesn't fully answer the question.

...chairperson Peace Mabe (ANC) first made the apt comparison between Saartjie Baartman, prodded at by white, male, European scientists almost exactly 200 years ago, and Semenya, who's been subjected to ostensibly "scientific" gender tests because she does not conform to a certain feminine identity construction.

Mabe indicated that while the media was saturated with this issue, the department's position was not being heard publicly. She also demanded to know whether it had provided any support to the "beautiful young lady". <snip> Afterwards, Mabe told Independent Newspapers political reporter Carien du Plessis that the department should have proactively prevented the tests by sending in lawyers.

Citations to and text of mammalian cryonics study from 1957 edit

Would someone with access to JSTOR please help me get a copy of Smith, A.U. (December 17, 1957) "Problems in the Resuscitation of Mammals from Body Temperatures Below 0°C" Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series B, Biological Sciences, 147(929):533-544 ("14 pages" -- there must be a three page fold out leaf)?

What I want even more than the full text of that article is the the list of citations made in 1990 through 2010 to it from the Science Citation Index/Web of Science. Please leave that list on my talk page if it's too long for you to feel comfortable about leaving here. I am also very interested in the CSI/WoS citations listed in 1990-2010 to Houlé, J.D. and Das, G.D. (September, 1980) "Freezing and transplantation of brain tissue in rats" Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences, 36(9):1114-5, but I don't really need the full text for that one, as the abstract is good enough for my purposes at present -- not that I would mind having the full text. Cystic fibrosis edit

Cystic fibrosis, a Featured article, is undergoing review of its featured status, but unfortunately copy editors are not working on prose and style issues before content and sourcing have been addressed. The entire October issue of Seminars in Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine was dedicated to reviews of cystic fibrosis; MEDRS don't get much better than this, and these articles could really be used to spruce up the article and perhaps save it at FAR. I couldn't find that article despite my database telling me it had access to The Dallas Morning News. Possibly the archive I have doesn't go back far enough. Fantastic! It turns out that one was enough because its refs. 38 and 39 are about the same topic by the same author: "38. Arav, A. (2003) 'Large tissue freezing.' J Assist Reprod Genet 20:351. 39. I also looked into this. The quote with the wording you give appears on page 102 of the 1949 edition of Albert Einstein, Philosopher-Scientist P.A. Schlipp (ed.). This is in an essay by Arnold Sommerfeld entitled "To Albert Einstein's Seventieth Birthday"; according to a footnote this was translated specifically for the book by Schilpp, from "Zum Siebzigsten Geburtstag Albert Einsteins" which appeared in Deutsche Beiträge (Eine Zweimonatsschrift) Vol III, No 2, 1949. Thus there are grounds for believing the English version of this quote can be traced to Schilpp's book. Also, given that Sommerfeld was one of the "invading mathematicians" (according to his Wikipedia article "His mathematical contributions to the theory [of special relativity] helped its acceptance by the skeptics."), I would be inclined to believe it is genuine Dr pda (talk) 20:34, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

An editor claims that it also appears on page 508 (and has used it as a source in Pleasuredrome) but this page isn't available for display on Google books. There's pretty much nothing online, so I was wondering if anybody had access to newspapers/magazines from the era (most likely either October to December 2002 or 2003, the periods of its release and reissue) that might contain such reviews? I ran a quick search on the ProQuest Newspapers database, which turned up about 60 articles for the search "Santa Claus Lane" AND Duff. I skimmed through these and cut out the ones which provided no useful information (e.g. only listed the name of the album), which left about 30. I am looking at the contributions of what seems to be an individual with copyright difficulties dating back some time. Several articles, created as recently as today, are verifiably pasted from previously published web pages, but this contributor has several times cited to the above book. For example: Assamese kinship. Originally published in 1972, this book has been frequently republished by the National Book Trust (a 2000 paperback carries the ISBN of 8123701454) I'm hoping to find somebody who can access to the book to compare the text in that specific article to see if it infringes. I'm searching for the text of a book The People of the Haven by Rev James Dodd Jackson (1861-1918) (son of the President of the UK Primitive Methodist Conference in 1897). This collection of stories was originally published (separately) in the Aldersgate Primitive Methodist Magazine (I don't have access to this) and was then published as a book in the late 1800s. I have borrowed a copy of another book "'Twixt Moor and Mead" by this author, and am intending to scan it and make it available (with notes) on the internet. (Where would be the best place?) TSX eReview edit

TSX eReview is a monthly statistical publication of the Toronto Stock Exchange. I use Chapter 3 out of each month's issue to keep a series of lists updated, but it seems that my reliable online source for accessing it is no longer reliable. It's still possible for me to get the information by visiting the main public reference library where I live, requesting their hard copy from the stacks, and transcribing/photocopying the relevant pages, but I'm hoping someone has an easier way of accessing it online. It's something to which most Canadian university libraries would subscribe and have available as a PDF through their online resource system.

I'm looking specifically for the January, February, and March issues of this year, but in a perfect world, I'd find someone who'd be able to provide it monthly going forward. Chapter 3 usually runs about 4-5 pages long out of each issue. Mlaffs (talk) 15:43, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Completion of bibliographic information edit

As identified on the talk page of NCAT Pavement Test Track, the bibliographic information for about ten sources is incomplete, namely lacking the title and author's name, which should be addressed. We do, however, have page numbers. The creator of the article seems to have left the project immediately after "completing" his educational assignment. Since at least some of the article was copy/pasted, it would also be good to check those sources (those without public web archives) against the original version of the article for copy/pasted text that may not already be out of the article by now. The article also needs a free photo and I am not sure who to ask. The public USGS imagery on MSR Maps (formerly known as TerraServer) is from around 1950, way too old to see the track. Hello, I looking for a citation to Assassinated Catholic priests in Guatemala concerning two people on the list. The first is Faustino Villanueva who gets a ghit at the following ArchivedURL. Unfortunately, it is a pay-for-view and I don't have the money to pay for it (truck problems). Next up is Tulio Maruzzo Rappo who gets ghits as Maruzzo Tulio Rappo and is supposedly a saint by different URLs found. None of the URLs are neutral cites but he is listed as a saint. Hm, that's strange. I looked up some other sources and they indeed point to chapter 11. Specifically, this got me thinking whether the source could be a different book, by citing it as

"[Eusebius'] account is in b. 11 of his Martyrs of Palestine, trans. and ed. H. J. Lawlor and J. E. L. Oulton (1929)"

However, this one again pointed to his Church History, with the citation in the following form:

"From Eusebius's relation of the martyrs of Palestine, at the end of the eighth book of his history, c. 11, 12. p.346. Ed. Vales"

Apparently the Martyrs of Palestine was originally a separate work. A longer version now exists only as a Syriac manuscript, but a shorter version in Greek was inserted into the Historia Ecclesiastica. Different manuscripts have it in different places, in some it is between Books VIII and IX, in some at the end of book X, and in one in the middle of Book VIII, ch 13. Some translators include it and some don't. One translation which does include it can be downloaded as a 40 MB pdf nicely converted to text from here, (p743). An earlier edition can be browsed online as a series of page images; the relevant passage starts here. The passage is indeed in chapter XI of the Martyrs of Palestine, which is inserted at the end of Book VIII in these editions. Dr pda (talk) 23:16, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

An article referred to in the second snippet here that should appear in an issue of The Sun (New York) from c.1936. The title is supposedly "Parable of the Isms".

I don't have access to The Sun either, however the parable (not under that name) was mentioned in a letter to the editor in the Los Angeles Times, Nov 25, 1938. In the Chicago Daily Tribune, December 3, 1938, p21 the parable is attributed to Silas Strawn in an address at the Economic Club Dinner, November 29 1935. Major newspapers are usually regarded as reliable sources, so I think it would be fine to cite this for the Chicago Daily Times asserting Shawn as the source. I would be inclined to add the information to the existing text as follows:

Bill Sherk mentions that such lists circulated throughout the country since around 1936 under the title "Parable of the Isms".[7] A column in The Chicago Daily Tribune in 1938 attributes a version involving socialism, communism, fascism and New Dealism to an address by Silas Strawn to the Economic Club of Chicago on November 29, 1935.<ref>"The Class in Political Isms". Chicago Daily Tribune. December 3, 1938. p.12, col.3.</ref>

If you wanted to make a stronger statement, e.g. Silas Strawn used a version involving socialism, communism, fascism and New Dealism in an address to the Economic Club of Chicago on November 29, 1935, then you would indeed have to confirm the details, eg by emailing the Economic Club of Chicago, as you suggest. They may well have a transcript, as their 75th anniversary book on their website has transcripts from many speakers. At the least it should be possible for them to verify the date of the address—pages 163–217 of the 75th anniversary book appear to have a list of Dinner Meetings of the Club (unfortunately this is not online). Scholarly articles and out of date print publications discussing Swan Song (novel) edit

I'm starting a major revamp of the article in question and have identified several possible sources discussing themes, style, etc. in google books and scholar searches. For most of these, I am able to find enough in the google books hits to form my text and citations. I have identified one specific source from a feminism related science publication that is only available via a paid reprint here. I'm hoping someone has access to the article in question and can provide the text that discusses the book and the info I would need to cite it.

Additionally, I would be happy for more detailed info if anyone has access to Science Fiction, Fantasy, or Horror annual reviews from that time period (book was published in 1987 and I've found references to it in these types of publications as late as 1990). I'm interested in anything notable that reviewed the book in general and/or discussed themes and the style of writing. As an example, one literary review I saw in a google search noted that this book shared a theme with several other novels of that time involving evil shapeshifters in horror fiction. The source in question discussed this as being a relatively new theme to the genre at the time. You can see this example here (scroll to reference on page 29).

I have come across reference to an intriguing paper:

Wenzel, M. (1988) Ferrocene, ruthenocene, and rhodocene analogs of haloperidol - Synthesis and organ distribution after marking with ¹⁰³Ru or ^103mRh. Applied Radiation and Isotopes, 39(12), 1237-1241.

I have not heard before of any medical / biological application of rhodocene, but this paper seems to indicate that there may be such applications. Unfortunately, I don't have access to the paper itself and looking at papers that have referenced it I find they were mostly looking at ferrocenes or ruthenocenes. However, I will need newspaper references to expand it further. Around the day the movie was released in cinemas, The Straits Times published an article about the differences between Children of Heaven and Homerun (I could write an entire section comparing the two movies, solely based on that reference). Furthermore, The Straits Times and Channel NewsAsia are likely to provide enough references to write a decent Production section (a neccesity if I ever push the article for GA status). I'm investigating Samuel R. Gerber. Gerber was a famous forensic scientist/pathologist and known for his work in the Sam Sheppard case. I found he's had an obituary in a 1987 Plain Dealer issue. Ányos Jedlik and the Dynamo edit

The dynamo article has a claim that it was invented by Anyos Jedlik. This has been labelled as dubious. This book,

Andrew L. Simon, Made in Hungary: Hungarian contributions to universal culture, p207, Simon Publications LLC, 1998 ISBN 0966573420

makes the same claim and contains in its bibliography the paper,

Oh I see, in that case you have misunderstood, I can already read Made in Hungary on google books preview. It does in fact have a source (although not inline in the text, it's on page 404) which I have quoted above. What we are trying to do is trace the source of Simon's claim since we doubt it is true. I am looking for the Hungarian paper he quotes, not the book itself. Even that is not the end of it since a 1971 paper author could not possibly have direct experience of an 1828 event, that paper itself must have had a source which is what I am ultimately trying to establish. His experimental machine made in 1861 had a special feature of technological importance; namely, the principle of self-excitation, in other words, the dynamo principle first appeared in the operating instructions Jedlik wrote for this machine. This machine was only used as a demonstration device, and Jedlik did not publish the new construction.[34]

citing Verebely (1931), "Ányos Jedlik A Hungarian Pioneer of Electricity", Elektrotechnika 24, pp. 213-26 and Singer, H., and Hall, W. (1958), A History of Technology, vol. V, part 2.10, p. 187. Apparently the operating instructions appeared in an inventory for the university. The "1828 event" you mention is i think one of 292 experiments listed in 1829 which concludes: "an electromagnetic wire can create continuous rotating movement around a similarly electromagnetic wire", a DC motor w/ commutator, not a dynamo.—eric 16:17, 9 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

One user has inserted claims in several articles tht Jedlik invented the electric motor, the electric motor with electromagnets for the stationary and rotating parts along with the commutator, the electric vehicle, and several other things. I have asked in the Electric motor talk page for a good reference showing what year he publicly demonstrated and published any such inventions, and have not gotten a satisfactory response. A photo of a museum model is shown in the article, which is claimed to be from 1828, with many modern features, but with uncertain provenance. There are many cases of museums having illustrative models constructed in modern times, but falsely claimed to be the device constructed many years earlier. The above sounds like there was an inventory at the university dating to 1861, which is the first documentation, if not publication. This is a pretty weak claim, given that others had published publicly demonstrated, been written up in the scientific and popular press and taken out patents for "electromagnetic wire rotating around electromagnetic wire" long before 1861. A college teacher could be expected to build demo devices to illustrate what was going on ion the field, and it is too easy to attribute decades of developments to the first year Jedlik did any demo of electromagnetism in his classes, back in 1828 or whenever. It sounds like a backdated claim. More translation of what he wrote, and clear statement of when he wrote it, is essential to understand Jedlik's role. Recent web pages or popular articles which simply assert, without references, that Jedlik "invented the electric motor in 1828" are not convincing when other claimants have lots of public presentation of their work at the actual time of their inventions. Well, those should be in most major university libraries, but I note that another edition of Hare is searchable on Hathitrust here. A search for "The Board" there finds four pages in that edition, 160, 172, 175 and 376. Searching it for Hollywood finds nothing.
