Waddell, D.D.; b. 1854; educ: at Glasgow; joined I.M.S., 1880; was for 6 years Professor of Chemistry and Pathology, Medical College, Calcutta; served in Burma Campaign, 1886-87; Chitral Relief Force, 1895; China Expedition, 1901-02; raised to the rank of Lieut.-Colonel, 1900; attached to Tibet Mission, 1903-04; Professor of Tibetan, University College, London; President, University Medical Society and Resident Surgeon, Western Infirmary, 1879; discovered many important classic sites in the ancient “Holy Land” of Buddhism; travelled in Tibet, the Himalayas, Burma, China, Japan, North America, etc. Publications: The Buddhism of Tibet; The Birds of Sikkim; Discovery of the Birth place of Buddha; Tribes of the Brahmaputra Valley; Lhassa and its Mysteries; joint author of Medical Jurisprudence for India; papers of Archaeology and Anthropology. m.
