Description
English: This montage of spectra taken using the X-shooter instrument on ESO's Very Large Telescope shows the changing behaviour of the kilonova AT 2017gfo in the galaxy NGC 4993 over a period of 12 days after the explosion (GW170817) was detected on 17 August 2017. Each spectrum covers a range of wavelengths from the near-ultraviolet to the near-infrared and reveals how the object became dramatically redder as it faded.
Deutsch: Diese Montage von Spektren, die mit dem X-Shooter-Instrument am Very Large Telescope der ESO aufgenommen wurden, zeigt das sich ändernde Verhalten der Kilonova AT 2017gfo in der Galaxie NGC 4993 über einen Zeitraum von 12 Tagen nach der Explosion (GW170817) am 17. August 2017. Jedes Spektrum deckt einen Wellenlängenbereich vom nahen Ultraviolett bis hin zum nahen Infrarot ab und zeigt, wie das Objekt mit dem Verblassen dramatisch röter wurde.
