Description

New data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory has provided stringent constraints on the environment around one of the closest supernovas discovered in decades.

Source

The image appears on a website entitled, "M82 SN2014J: NASA's Chandra Observatory Searches for Trigger of Nearby Supernova" at url=http://chandra.harvard.edu/photo/2014/m82/.

Date

Rationale

No free licensed or public domain alternatives known to exist to show close-up views of the region around the supernova SN 2014J in the M82 galaxy in data taken prior to the explosion (lower center), data gathered on February 3, 2014, (main image), and after the supernova went off (lower right). The image also indicates where the supernova is in the M82 galaxy.

Permission

Fair Use, NASA images are usually Public Domain, but Raffaella Margutti, Jerod Parrent, Atish Kamble, Alicia Soderberg, Ryan Foley, Dan Milisavljevic, Maria Drout, and Robert Kirshner may not have agreed to this.
