An Iranian borrowing, ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tr̥Hás.[1][2] Attested also as an adjective տար (tar, distant).

Used post-classically to calque Ancient Greek words prefixed with δια- (dia-) and παρά (pará), e.g. տարբերեմ (tarberem) = διαφέρω (diaphérō), տարօրինակ (tarōrinak) = παράνομος (paránomos).[1]
