- From Balinese natar (ᬦᬢᬃ, “house-complex”).
Both are inherited from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *natad (“cleared area around house, cleared ground in village”), from Proto-Austronesian *NataD (“outside”). Related to Indonesian latar (“background”). Cognate of Tetum natar (“rice paddy, paddy field”).
