From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Hadal (talk | contribs) at 02:53, 31 May 2004 (Reverted edits by 218.2.171.105 to last version by VeryVerily). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

This is a list of messages created after the installation of the MediaWiki namespace. Original messages can be found at MediaWiki interface messages. Other includable elements are listed on MediaWiki custom elements. Read more about the MediaWiki namespace. See also Wikipedia:Topics

Instructions

In order to create a new custom message, simply create a page in the MediaWiki namespace, named "MediaWiki:", followed by a name for the message, that contains the text of the message. Names cannot contain spaces and initial case is irrelevant. To create such a page, like any other page, create a link something like [[MediaWiki:mymessage]] and then click on it. You may want to consider protecting the messages you create (if you have administrator privileges), but see the talk page for a discussion of this. Please list any custom messages you create on this page.

There are two major ways to include custom messages, subst and msg. subst makes a copy of the message text and places it where you put the tag after you save an article (substitution), msg loads the message and puts it on the page every time you load it (transclusion).

In other words, when the message is updated, you do not need to update a page that uses it if you use msg. As a guideline, short, temporal messages that will be removed soon should be copied using subst (which has the advantage of showing the message in the wiki source), and standard notices that might remain on a page for months or forever should be transcluded for easy updating. (You should not use msg for a message which contain any links which may change in the future. This method doesn't refresh "What links here" unless every article containing the msg get changed after the modification of the link in the message.)

For convenient editing of the custom message from a page on which it is used you can include in the custom message a link to edit itself, see e.g. the navigational box at Train.

When you add new MediaWiki custom messages, please help keep the table in alphabetical order.

Redirect pages

One or several to be placed at the bottom of a redirect page. This doesn't prevent the redirect from working.

Name Current text
{{msg:R from abbreviation}}
Talk
  • From an abbreviation: This is a redirect from an abbreviation to a related topic, such as the expansion of the abbreviation.
    • Instead of this template, use {{R from acronym}} for acronyms pronounced as words, such as NATO and RADAR; or
    • Use {{R from initialism}} for those pronounced as letters, such as CIA and HIV; or
    • Use {{R from short name}}, instead, for the initials of a person's name, and other shortenings not typically classed as abbreviations.
{{msg:R_from_misspelling}}
Talk
{{msg:R_for_alternate_capitalisation}}
Talk
  • From other capitalisation: This is a redirect from a title with another method of capitalisation. It leads to the title in accordance with the Wikipedia naming conventions for capitalisation, or it leads to a title that is associated in some way with the conventional capitalisation of this redirect title. This may help writing, searching and international language issues.
    • If this redirect is an incorrect capitalisation, then {{R from miscapitalisation}} should be used instead, and pages that use this link should be updated to link directly to the target. Miscapitalisations can be tagged in any namespace.
    • Use this rcat to tag only mainspace redirects; when other capitalisations are in other namespaces, use {{R from modification}} instead.
{{msg:R_with_possibilities}}
Talk
  • With possibilities: This is a redirect from a title that potentially could be expanded into a new article or other type of associated page such as a new template. The topic described by this title may be more detailed than is currently provided on the target page or in a section of that page.
    • When the target page becomes too large, or for any reason a new page would be an improvement, this redirect may be replaced with an article, template or other project page that is carved out of the target page. See also {{R to section}} and use together with this rcat when appropriate.
    • If the topic of the redirect is not susceptible to expansion, then use other rcats such as {{R to section}} or {{R to list entry}} when appropriate.
    • Since a new page may be created, links to this redirect should not be replaced with a direct link to the target page. To make redirects to this page, use {{R avoided double redirect}}.
    • {{R printworthy}} should be used together with this template when applied to a redirect in mainspace.
    • When used on a template redirect, it will automatically populate Category:Template redirects with possibilities.
{{msg:R_to_sort_name}}
Talk
Template:R to sort name
{{msg:R_from_CamelCase}}
Talk
  • From a camel case title: This is a redirect from a camel case page name. In the initial versions of Wikipedia, all links had to be "CamelCase", i.e., words that used medial capitals; they are "two-humped" like a Bactrian camel. These are kept as redirects to maintain edit history and to avoid breaking links that may have been made externally.

Bistorta officinalis
Bistorta officinalis, also known as he common bistort, is a species of flowering plant in the dock family Polygonaceae. It is native to Europe and northern and western Asia, but has also been cultivated and become naturalized in other parts of the world such as in the United States. It is typically found growing in moist meadows, nutrient-rich wooded swamps, forest edges, wetlands, parks, gardens and disturbed ground. A herbaceous perennial, it grows to a height of 20 to 80 centimetres (8 to 31 inches). It blooms from late spring into autumn, producing tall, erect, unbranched and hairless stems ending in single terminal racemes that are club-like spikes, 5 to 7 centimetres (2 to 3 inches) long, of rose-pink flowers. This B. officinalis inflorescence was photographed in the Austrian Alps.Photograph credit: Uoaei1

  • Optimism should have a separate page that focuses on the philosophical idea of optimism and distinguishes the philosophical view from "positive thinking" and other everyday uses of the word.
  • Philosophy of social science, has some okay points but requires elaboration on Wittgenstein and Winch, perhaps other linguistic critiques, whether logical positivist or postmodernist.
  • Exchange value needs to be redone, it shouldn't be under 'Marxist theory'- although it's an important component of Marxist theory it's also vital for all economics. That said the article's weight on Marx is also absurd.
  • German Idealism and the articles related to it may need to be rewritten or expanded to avoid undue weight on Arthur Schopenhauer.
  • Protected values first section confuses right action and values and needs a copy edit, moving and wikifying
  • Quality (philosophy) needs a more clear explanation.
  • Socratic dialogues could do with some tidying and clarification. See the talk page for one suggested change.
  • Problem of universals: The introductory definition is (perhaps) fixed. But, the article is poor. Check out the German version.
  • Teleology: the article is shallow and inconsistent.
  • Existentialism: the quality of this article varies wildly and is in desperate need of expert attention.
  • Analytic philosophy This is a very major topic, but still has several sections which are stubs, and several topics which are not covered.
  • Lifeworld A philosophical concept that seems to have fallen exclusively into the hands of the sociologists. Could use some attention; it's a major and complex issue in phenomenology.
  • Perception Needs the attention of philosophically minded Wikipedians. This is only the start of an overhaul of perception and related articles.
