From Aramaic עַרֲפֵּלָא (ˁarăpellā), from Proto-Semitic *ʿ-r-p (cloud) + a suffixed -l; cognate to Hebrew עֲרָפֶל ('arafél) and Ugaritic 𐎓𐎗𐎔𐎚 (ʿrpt /⁠ʿurpatu⁠/).
