Calque of Latin Mare Mortuus, under influence from Byzantine Greek Νεκρά Θάλασσα (Nekrá Thálassa, “Nekrá Thálassa”) and Arabic اَلْبَحْر الْمَيِّت (al-baḥr al-mayyit).

- A lake in the Middle East in Israel, Palestine and Jordan, noted for high salinity and for its banks being the lowest land-based elevation on Earth.
