Calque of Latin Mare Mortuus, under influence from Byzantine Greek Νεκρά Θάλασσα (Nekrá Thálassa, Nekrá Thálassa) and Arabic اَلْبَحْر الْمَيِّت (al-baḥr al-mayyit).
