Borrowed from French autocrate, itself from Ancient Greek αὐτοκρατής (autokratḗs, sovereign), from αὐτο- (auto-, self) (combinatory form of αὐτός (autós)) + κρατία (kratía, rule) (from κράτος (krátos, strength, power)).
