Egypt reported 531 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, a spike in the daily tally since the fourth wave of the outbreak started in the country in early August.

Since the outbreak began in February 2020, the total infection tally has reached 294 482, the health ministry said in its daily coronavirus update statement.

Since August, Egypt has been seeing a steady increase in detected cases. The surge started a month after the more contagious delta variant was detected in the country.

The ministry also reported 13 new deaths over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths from the virus to 16,908.

Egyptian health officials expect the fourth wave to hit its peak late in September and early October.

As many as 498 patients have been discharged after recovering from the virus, raising the total number of recoveries to 247,948, as per the country's health ministry count for Wednesday.

Egypt – where 13 million citizens have been jabbed with WHO-approved vaccines – has been recently intensifying its vaccination campaign to have 40 million inoculated citizens by the end of 2021 in parallel with a low-prioritised plan for booster shots targeting those who were inoculated at least 6-8 months ago.

The state has urged citizens to register for vaccine shots that are administered at 777 centres nationwide, including 60 at universities and 180 dedicated for travellers.

This is in addition to the 1,300 mobile vaccination teams nationwide, according to the health ministry.

Six vaccines have been administered in Egypt since the beginning of the vaccination campaign earlier this year: Sinopharm, Sinovac, Sputnik, AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson, which is currently reserved for travellers, in addition to the locally-made VACSERA Sinovac.

Doses of the Pfizer vaccine are scheduled to arrive in Egypt on Thursday evening. The country has distributed and installed a number of large-capacity and eight medium-capacity special refrigerators to store the vaccine, which needs ultra-cold temperatures, around -90°C to -60°C (-130°F and -76°F).
