Palestinian killed by Israeli army in West Bank: Palestinian source

Israel also began a deadly campaign of air strikes on the Gaza Strip on Monday

A Palestinian was killed and another wounded Tuesday by Israeli army gunfire in the north of the occupied West Bank, a Palestinian security source told AFP.

Both were members of Palestinian intelligence services and were shot at an army checkpoint near Nablus, the source said without giving details.

The Israeli army earlier reported an "attempted drive-by shooting at Tapuah Junction" near Nablus.

"Two assailants were neutralized at the scene. No IDF injuries were reported," it said.

The incident followed an Israeli crackdown on Palestinians, with at least 26 Palestinians and two Israelis killed since Monday evening.

Hundreds of people, mostly Palestinians, were wounded in Friday in Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque compound and elsewhere in the city.

The Israeli crackdown in the final days of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan has been fuelled by a lawsuit between Palestinian refugee families and Jewish settlers seeking to take possession of houses in Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem.

Israel began a deadly campaign of air strikes on the Gaza Strip on Monday in response to volleys of rockets fired into Israel by Palestinian militants.
