New Star Wars open-world video game in the works at Ubisoft

A new era for Star Wars gaming has begun.

Lucasfilm Games, previously branded as Star Wars Games, has struck a collaboration with the folks at Ubisoft, the game company behind titles like Assassin's Creed and Far Cry, to develop a new story-driven open-world video game set in the Star Wars galaxy. This is the first Star Wars game set up outside of Electronic Arts since it became the sole publisher of Star Wars games after Disney purchased Lucasfilm.

This title, which is in early development, is set up at Ubisoft's Massive Entertainment studio in Malmö, Sweden, which has been responsible for turning out Tom Clancy's The Division 2, Far Cry 3, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, and the upcoming Avatar Project. Further story details haven't been revealed just yet, but "story-driven" and "open-world" give off a Jedi: Fallen Order vibe — a game that proved to be a successful for EA.

Yves Guillemot, co-founder and CEO of Ubisoft, called this "the beginning of a long-term collaboration with Disney and Lucasfilm Games."

"This is a lore that we love, and we want to do it justice with a game and story that bring both lifelong and new fans on an immersive and outstanding journey that will stay with them for years," Julian Gerighty, the game's creative director, said.

But that doesn't mean EA's work with Lucasfilm Games is over. In a statement to EW, a spokesperson for the company said, "We are proud of our long-standing collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, which will continue for years to come. Our talented teams have created some of the most successful games in the history of the Star Wars franchise, including Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Star Wars: Battlefront, Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, and Star Wars: Squadrons. We love Star Wars and look forward to creating more exciting experiences for players to enjoy." Which is good, because we're still waiting for Jedi: Fallen Order 2, please!

Many of the titles EA listed in its statement were featured in a sizzle reel announcing the new rebranding of Star Wars Games as Lucasfilm Games.

After Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm from George Lucas, the company did away with LucasArts, the gaming division of Lucasfilm, and struck a multi-year deal for EA to develop and publish Star Wars video games exclusively. This week, Lucasfilm Games was announced, followed by the news of an Indiana Jones game from the makers of Wolfenstein over at Bethesda, proving the game division is now open to working on video games for some of its other non-Star Wars properties.
