The gay My Best Friend's Wedding sequel that almost happened

My Best Friend’s Wedding has one of the great endings ever for a romantic comedy. Instead of winding up with a suitor, Julianne (Julia Roberts) ends the film dancing the night away with her best gay pal, George (Rupert Everett).

When the film was released in June 1997, it became a massive hit, grossing $127 million at the domestic box office. So it’s no surprise that there was talk of a sequel — but what exactly would that movie be?

“We did have some discussion about a sequel,” director P.J. Hogan reveals to EW. “I remember talking to Julia about it. It was something about Rupert was going to get married and she was going to break up their wedding. I thought that would’ve been fun, but I don’t think we could find a way to bring all those characters back.”

There’s still time. When they reunited for EW’s latest cover, the cast members admitted that they discussed revisiting these characters again.

JULIA ROBERTS: It came up today.
DERMOT MULRONEY: It really did. I’ve been asked about it a lot, obviously, and I’ve always said yes. I think it’s a great idea, but I decided today I’m going to say no from now on.
RUPERT EVERETT: What?
DERMOT MULRONEY: What I’m going to suggest instead is that they release My Best Friend’s Wedding for the summer of 2019. I mean [release it] as is, same poster, and I bet you anything it would be the blockbuster romantic comedy of the year.
