Adam Sandler's Murder Mystery tops Netflix's most-viewed titles of 2019 list

Stranger Things, You, 6 Underground, The Irishman also among Netflix's most-viewed projects.

Adam Sandler is currently the king of streaming and the box office.

While his potential Oscar contender Uncut Gems sets the holiday charts ablaze (with north of $20 million in ticket sales, the film is already en route to potentially becoming distributor A24’s highest grossing theatrical release ever), the 53-year-old comedy icon is sitting pretty atop Netflix’s list of most-streamed titles released in 2019.

Sandler’s feature comedy Murder Mystery — which he produced and stars in opposite Jennifer Aniston as a couple caught up in a high-stakes homicide investigation aboard a billionaire’s yacht — finished the year as the streaming giant’s most-watched overall release in the United States, beating out season 3 of Stranger Things, Ryan Reynolds‘ Michael Bay-directed action flick 6 Underground, and Martin Scorsese’s awards player The Irishman.

Other Netflix original films that cracked the top 10 include Ben Affleck’s ensemble adventure film Triple Frontier, Zac Efron’s Ted Bundy drama Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile, Brenda Song’s stalker thriller Secret Obsession, and The Highwaymen, starring Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson. Non-Netflix titles that appear on the list are all animation titles hailing from major series: Incredibles 2 lands at No. 3, followed by Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse at No. 8 and Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 at No. 9.

On the television side, Stranger Things season 3 was Netflix’s most-watched series of the year, followed by The Witcher at No. 2, The Umbrella Academy at No. 3, Dead to Me at No. 4, and, after only four days in release, You season 2 at No. 5.

Netflix compiled this year’s list by measuring data from accounts choosing to watch at least two minutes of a series, movie, or special during its first 28 days of streaming availability on Netflix in 2019. The compilation breaks from Netflix’s past metric of measuring popularity by gauging which accounts finished at least 70 percent of a given title, which the company has indicated “discriminates against longer form content.”
