Jennifer Aniston gives surprise shout-out to Adam Sandler in first SAG Awards win since Friends

The Morning Show star last won a SAG Award 24 years ago.

Jennifer Aniston nabbed her first major trophy for The Morning Show at the 2020 SAG Awards on Sunday night, and it also marked her first time collecting the honor since Friends.

Nearly 25 years ago in 1996, Aniston and her Friends costars won the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

In her acceptance speech for Best Actress in a TV Drama, Aniston gave a surprise shout-out to her Murder Mystery costar Adam Sandler for his performance in Uncut Gems, which was snubbed by the Oscars.

“Adam Sandler. Your performance is extraordinary and your magic is real, buddy. I love you,” she said.

Aniston also thanked her Morning Show crew, including costar Reese Witherspoon, for bringing to life the “complicated and messy and beautifully human” characters on the show.

“I love you girl. It took 20 years, but we finally did it,” she told Witherspoon, whom she dubbed her “partner in crime.”

On the AppleTV+ series, Aniston plays Alex Levy, a veteran news host who is blindsided when she discovers that her cohost of 15 years, Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell) has been fired following allegations of sexual assault. Levy then must deliver the news to the country while also grappling with what her friend has done and renegotiating her contract with the network.

“This role never could’ve come to me any sooner than now,” Aniston told EW in October. “It’s one of the hardest jobs I’ve had. I knew I was up to the task, but then there was the excavation of all the emotions in order to create this world for this woman. All of her lifelines are falling away. I would walk out of some of those scenes feeling like a manhole cover just came off my back.”

This is Aniston’s first major award for the show, beating out Helena Bonham Carter (The Crown), Olivia Colman (The Crown), Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), and Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale). She was also nominated for a Golden Globe, along with Witherspoon.
