All the Broadway shows that are reopening this year

The lights will soon go up on Broadway once again, as New York's theater industry has set its sights on restarting performances in the coming months. Many details still need to be worked out, of course, but with vaccination rates rising and COVID-19 infection numbers finally falling, there's hope that the light at the end of the tunnel will only get closer as the year goes on.

In the meantime, many shows have already announced their planned return dates for the fall. Here's when you can expect every production, from long-running classics to brand-new works, to raise their curtains, along with how and when you can get tickets.

Ain't Too Proud

Ain't Too Proud — The Life and Times of The Temptations, which follows the story of the iconic Motown group (as its title would suggest), will resume performances on Saturday, Oct. 16 at the Imperial Theatre. (Should that date hold, it will be the first Broadway show in a decade to open on a Saturday.) You can purchase tickets now via the musical's website, Telecharge, or by calling (800) 447-7400.

Aladdin

Disney's Aladdin will once again welcome audiences to a whole new world (different from the whole new world we've lived in for the last year, thankfully) at the New Amsterdam Theater starting Sept. 28. Tickets are on sale now through Ticketmaster.

The Book of Mormon

Doorbells will ring once more when The Book of Mormon returns to its home at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre on Nov. 5. (A production in London's West End is also due to reopen Nov. 15.) The Tony-winning musical, written by Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and Robert Lopez, has been running on Broadway since 2011. Tickets for the show will go on sale beginning June 28 via SeatGeek.

Caroline, or Change

The first Broadway revival of Caroline, or Change was set to begin previews at Studio 54 on March 13, 2020... and, well, you can guess how that turned out. The musical, which follows a Black maid's day-to-day life in 1963, will now begin previews on Oct. 8, with opening night scheduled for Oct. 27.

Chicago

Chicago will razzle-dazzle audiences once again starting Sept. 14, returning to its longtime home at the Ambassador Theatre just in time for the production's 25th anniversary (Nov. 14). Tickets are on sale now through Telecharge.

Clyde's

A new play from two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage (Ruined, Sweat), Clyde's will kick off Second Stage Theater's new season this fall at the Hayes Theater. The play takes place at a truck-stop sandwich shop that offers its formerly incarcerated kitchen staff a shot at redemption as they pursue their shared dream of creating the perfect sandwich. Come From Away

Come From Away will land back on Broadway Sept. 21, resuming its run at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. (You can buy tickets now via Telecharge.) A filmed version of the musical, which tells the true story of a diverted planeload of passengers landing in Canada on 9/11, is also set to be released by Apple later this year.

Company

Phone rings, door chimes, in comes Company... or at least it will, when the highly-anticipated revival of the Stephen Sondheim classic finally opens on Broadway, with previews beginning Nov. 15. (The official opening is set for Dec. 9.) Katrina Lenk leads the cast as gender-flipped protagonist Bobbie — and don't worry, Patti LuPone is also on board to deliver "The Ladies Who Lunch" once again as Joanne. David Byrne's American Utopia

David Byrne fans can, and have, filled the wait for American Utopia's Broadway return with Spike Lee's excellent filmed version (streaming on HBO and HBO Max). But everyone (well, everyone with tickets) can come to his house (or rather, a theater to be announced) to see this glorious theatrical concert once again starting Sept. 17. Dear Evan Hansen

Dear Evan Hansen — the 2017 Tony winner for Best Musical — will reopen at the Music Box Theatre on Dec. 11, 2021, five years after its original opening night. (Before that, a film adaptation of the musical, starring original cast member and Tony winner Ben Platt, hits theaters Sept 24.) Tickets for the Broadway production, as well as the West End staging and North American tour, can be found at DearEvanHansen.com.

Diana

Based on the life of the late Princess of Wales, Diana at least got to begin previews before the world shut down last year. They'll resume at the Longacre Theatre on Nov. 2, with opening night now set for Nov. 17. (Tickets are on sale via Telecharge.) But eager audiences can get a look at the musical sooner: Netflix will release a filmed version on Oct. 1.

Freestyle Love Supreme

Freestyle Love Supreme, the hip-hop improv group co-founded by Thomas Kail, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Anthony Veneziale, will return to the Booth Theatre for a limited run from Oct. 7 through Jan. 2. (In addition to the core FLS cast, unannounced special guests will include Miranda, Christopher Jackson, Wayne Brady, Utkarsh Ambudkar, James Monroe Iglehart, Daveed Diggs, and more.) The group previously performed on Broadway back in 2019, and were also the subject of the documentary We Are Freestyle Love Supreme, which premiered on Hulu last year. Flying Over Sunset

This new musical, with a book and direction by James Lapine, music by Tom Kitt, and lyrics by Michael Korie, is set in the 1950s and is based on the lives of three notable people — writer Aldous Huxley (Harry Hadden-Paton); playwright, diplomat, and congresswoman Clare Boothe Luce (Carmen Cusack) and film legend Cary Grant (Tony Yazbeck) — each of whom in real life experimented with LSD. Flying Over Sunset will begin performances at Lincoln Center Theater's Vivian Beaumont Theater on Nov. 4 ahead of an opening night on Dec. 6. Girl From the North Country

On May 24, Bob Dylan's birthday, the musical inspired by his songbook fittingly announced it would return to Broadway on Oct. 13, 2021. Girl From the North Country had initially opened back on March 5, 2020, but had to shut down a week later when all of Broadway went dark due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tickets for the musical are on sale now.

Hadestown

Hadestown, 2019's Tony winner for Best Musical, will return to its home at the Walter Kerr Theatre beginning Sept. 2. Tickets will go on sale to the general public beginning June 11. Producers also announced that a Hadestown North American tour will kick off in Greenville, S.C. on Oct. 5 and then enter a four-week engagement at the Kennedy Center in Washington. Hamilton

Fittingly, Broadway's biggest phenomenon of recent years will help it rise up once again. Hamilton will resume performances on day one of Broadway's reopening, Sept. 14, at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. You can get your seat in the room where it happens through Ticketmaster.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will go through a transformation when it comes back to Broadway this fall. Producers announced that the Tony-winning two-part play will be restaged as a single show, which will return to the Lyric Theatre on Nov. 12. The one-show version of the play also set dates for its return in San Francisco (Jan. 11) and Toronto (May 2022). Jagged Little Pill

You oughta know that Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill, inspired by her classic 1995 album, will reopen on Broadway Oct. 21 at the Broadhurst Theatre. "Jagged Little Pill is about the complicated and harrowing effects of what it means to be disconnected from one another — and the beautiful, exhilarating healing that can happen when we rally together in those tough moments, to become beacons of vision and empathy for one another," Morissette said in a statement. "That has never felt more real than during this tumultuous past year, and I could not be more thrilled to glimpse the light at the end of this long tunnel that the live arts community has endured." Lackawanna Blues

Manhattan Theatre Club's Broadway staging of Ruben Santiago Hudson's solo play — in which he embodies more than 20 different characters — will come to the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre beginning Sept. 14, with an opening night set for Sept. 28. The show, set in a 1950s boarding house outside Buffalo, N.Y. and celebrating the woman who raised him, will feature original music by Bill Sims Jr., performed on stage by Grammy-nominated blues guitarist Junior Mack. Tickets will go on sale to the general public beginning Aug. 10 via Telecharge.

The Lehman Trilogy

Directed by Academy Award and Tony Award winner Sam Mendes, the quintessential story of western capitalism, rendered through the lens of a single immigrant family will resume performances on Saturday, Sept. 25, with an opening night set for Thursday, Oct. 14 at the Nederlander Theatre. Starring Simon Russell Beale and Adam Godley as the Lehman brothers, their sons, and grandsons, the play is told in three parts presented as one evening and charts the humble beginnings, outrageous successes, and devastating failure of the financial institution that would ultimately bring the global economy to its knees. The Lion King

The circle of life will begin again Sept. 14, as The Lion King resumes performances at Broadway's Minskoff Theater. If you just can't wait to see King, you can purchase tickets right now through Ticketmaster.

MJ

MJ, a new musical inspired by the life of Michael Jackson, will begin performances on Dec. 6 at the (newly refurbished!) Neil Simon Theatre, with Ephraim Sykes (a Tony nominee for Ain't Too Proud) playing the King of Pop. Tickets go on sale May 18 via Ticketmaster.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical

Moulin Rouge! The Musical will return to The Al Hirschfeld Theater on Sept. 24, led by Tony-nominated actors Aaron Tveit as Christian and Danny Burstein as Harold Zidler, with a new Satine to be announced following Karen Olivo's departure. The show will host a special dress rehearsal performance on Sept. 23 to honor New York's Frontline Workers prior to opening night. Fans who can't wait to sing along to "Elephant Love Medley" again can score tickets in a fan-only pre-sale beginning May 17 by signing up for the show's newsletter at www.MoulinRougeMusical.com by May 19. Mrs. Doubtfire

Get ready to say "Helloooooo!" to a new take on Mrs. Doubtfire when the musical version of the beloved Robin Williams film resumes previews on Oct. 21. (Opening night is now set for Dec. 5 at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.) Rob McClure stars as the titular nanny, a.k.a. struggling actor Daniel Hillard, who adopts the persona as a way to stay in his kids' lives. "One of the most thrilling differences between the movie and the Broadway show is that we are doing this in real-time," McClure previously told EW. "When Daniel Hillard runs into the other room and emerges as everyone's favorite Scottish nanny 18 seconds later, our director can't yell cut and send me to a trailer for five hours. We've got 18 seconds. I can feel the audience sweating with me! 'IS HE GONNA MAKE IT?!?' The stakes are so high!" You, too, can sweat with him by buying tickets via Telecharge.

Pass Over

Antoinette Chinonye Nwandu's searing drama Pass Over will open Aug. 4 for a limited run through Oct. 10 at the August Wilson Theatre. The Danya Taymor-directed play, which follows two Black men hoping to rise up off a city street corner and the stranger who disrupts their plans, draws inspiration Waiting for Godot and the story of Exodus and had a critically acclaimed run Off Broadway at Lincoln Center Theater in 2018. (A 2017 Chicago production, filmed by Spike Lee, is also available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.) Tickets to the Broadway production go on sale June 4, and more details are available here.

The Phantom of the Opera

The longest-running show in Broadway history resumes performances Oct. 22 at the Majestic Theatre — a lucky break for Phantom fans, as COVID forced the London production to close after 34 years in the West End. You can purchase tickets through Telecharge.

Six

Six, the pop musical about the wives of Henry VIII, also had its opening night stolen by COVID (it had been set for March 12, 2020, the day the Broadway shutdown began). Fortunately, the wives will get their chance to shine when performances begin on Sept. 17, with opening night now set for Oct. 3. Tickets are on sale now via Ticketmaster.

Skeleton Crew

Tony winner Phylicia Rashad will return to Broadway this December with the Broadway premiere of Skeleton Crew, written by Dominique Morisseau and directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson. Performances are due to begin on Dec. 21, with opening night set for Jan. 12, 2022. Details on when and how to get tickets will be announced at a later date.

Springsteen on Broadway

The Boss will be part of Broadway's reopening. A limited return run of Springsteen on Broadway will take place this summer at the St. James Theatre, beginning June 26 and continuing through Sept. 4. Tickets will go on sale starting June 10 at 12 p.m. ET and audience members will be required to provide full proof of COVID-19 vaccination in order to attend.

Thoughts of a Colored Man

Keenan Scott II's new play will begin previews on Oct. 1, with an opening night set for Oct. 31. Tickets for the production, centering on seven Black men on a single day in Brooklyn, will go on sale beginning June 18 at Telecharge.

Tina

Get ready to roll on the river once more as Tina: The Tina Turner Musical resumes performances on Oct. 8 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. "I know the role my story serves; I hope the retelling of it is inspirational, a reminder of our capacity for resilience and a celebration of our ability to overcome adversity together," Turner said in a statement. To Kill a Mockingbird

Aaron Sorkin's stage adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird will resume performances on Oct. 5 at the Shubert Theatre, with two key members of the original Broadway cast reprising their roles. Jeff Daniels will return to play Atticus Finch, while Celia Keenan-Bolger will be back as Scout Finch (a performance that won her a Tony Award in 2019). Trouble in Mind

Alice Childress's 1955 play Trouble in Mind, a somewhat meta, satirical work about the production of a racially charged play, will make its Broadway debut this fall at the American Airlines Theatre. Previews begin Oct. 29, with opening night scheduled for Nov. 18.

Waitress

It's time for another shift at the diner. The musical Waitress, which previously ended its nearly four-year Broadway run in January 2020, will return to the stage for a limited engagement beginning Sept. 2 and continuing through Jan. 9, 2022. Waitress composer Sara Bareilles will also return to portray the lead role of Jenna from Sept. 2 through Oct. 17. Tickets are on sale now at WaitressTheMusical.com.

Wicked

We'll believe that Jon M. Chu Wicked movie is happening when we see it, but in the meantime, the blockbuster musical will also kick off Broadway's comeback on Sept. 14, returning to the Gershwin Theatre. You can buy tickets via Ticketmaster now; no ruby slippers required.
