MoMu team takes over our journal and gives us a sneak peek at the renovation the museum is undergoing for the grand reopening planned for 2021

MoMu is home to an internationally acclaimed archive of contemporary (Belgian) fashion, historical costume, textile and an extensive fashion library and archive. But MoMu wants to be more than a museum, carefully preserving and displaying objects and facts. MoMu will be a haven for everyone who wants to explore fashion in all its aspects: not just what it looks like, but also what it means, how it comes to life, how its past, present and future affects us all. MoMu will be a haven for everyone interested in fashion in the broadest sense.

MoMu, the fashion museum of Antwerp, has been undergoing an ambitious renovation and expansion since April 2018, and will be reopening its doors to the general public over the weekend of 4 and 5 September 2021. The museum in Antwerp will also present its new programme beginning of next year. Thanks to the renovation, MoMu will be open continuously for the first time and will be able to devote itself to a varied programme at all times.

Roughly 800m² of additional public exhibition space will be created, including a large, multi-purpose space and a permanent exhibition hall for the permanent collection. These will ensure that visitors can also visit MoMu while thematic exhibitions are being changed, and that during peak times we can simultaneously display three different fashion stories in the 2,000 m². There will be an auditorium with a retractable stage enabling us to put on more readings, conferences and Q&A sessions.

MoMu’s library will be expanded with infrastructure for the museum’s study collection, so that besides reading the books and magazines visitors can also study and handle the objects. The museum will get its own shop and café. Behind the scenes, the depots and restoration studios will be completely renewed, which will allow us to store our collections and archives for future generations in a high-quality infrastructure under the best possible conditions. In this we are aiming for the most climate-neutral approach possible.
