Actress Emily Meade sparked a conversation in Hollywood when she requested an “intimacy coordinator” be brought onto the set of HBO drama The Deuce. With a show so heavily sexualized—it’s about the sex-trade industry in 1970s New York—Meade felt it important that an advocate be present on set who negotiates sex scenes between the director and actor so that both parties are comfortable. Meade said she was inspired to speak up about the need for oversight regarding sex scenes by the Time’s Up movement.
