Emily Ramshaw is the cofounder and CEO of The 19th, a nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization founded “to empower women—particularly those underserved by and underrepresented in American media—with the information, community, and tools they need to be equal participants in our democracy.” Ramshaw said she got the idea for the site four years ago while on maternity leave, and the election of Donald Trump, the Women’s March, and the #MeToo movement only catalyzed its creation. Prior to The 19th, Ramshaw served as editor-in-chief of the Austin-based nonprofit The Texas Tribune along with cofounder Amanda Zamora, who was the Tribune’s chief audience officer. As of August 2020, The 19th had raised $8.5 million for its mission including $500,000 from Craigslist founder Craig Newmark and $1 million from Kathryn Murdoch, the wife of Rupert Murdoch’s youngest son James.
