Overview

The CFO’s role within the organization has never been more important than it is in this moment.

Fallout from the pandemic, and the acceleration of digital transformation across industries, are producing both incredible opportunity and significant risk for businesses and their leadership teams. To help CFOs navigate this challenging landscape, Fortune is building a community for finance chiefs keen to engage with and learn from colleagues across industries.

In partnership with Workday, our CFO Collaborative series will mine insights from some of the world’s top business leaders, including former CFOs-turned-CEOs, about the evolving CFO role. We’ll focus on the quantum shifts CFOs are tackling, including how to interpret and leverage the massive explosion of data, and how to balance short-term financial targets with long-term stakeholder capitalism and ESG goals.

Our sessions will be interactive and peer driven, facilitated by Fortune senior journalists. Attendees will be able to participate in intimate working group discussions and share their solutions to current challenges that can make a lasting impact within their enterprises.

Past Conversations:

CFO COLLABORATIVE: FINANCE AS A DRIVER OF TRANSFORMATION

Nearly two years into the pandemic, finance leaders continue to grapple with macroeconomic shifts—from digital transformation and record M&As to the war over talent and increased focus on ESG demands from stakeholders. Yet, it turns out that finance might just be a key function to support your organization’s transformation across the board. In this session in partnership with Workday, we will explore the role of finance as a strategic partner in the future of the corporation, rather than just being the holder of the purse strings. How can finance transformation affect all parts of the business— from vision and strategy to organization and talent? And, how can the right finance strategy help your organization achieve both short-term gains along with long-term growth?

The session will feature interviews with Jeff Jones, President and CEO, H&R Block and Amy Feirn, Deputy CEO, Partnerships & Offerings, Deloitte Consulting LLP

CFO COLLABORATIVE: THE CFO’S ROLE IN REDEFINING THE FUTURE OF WORK

With more employees back to the office this fall, CFOs are increasingly focused on post-pandemic concerns of inflation, labor wage pressures and the war for talent. In this CFO Collaborative session in partnership with Workday, we will explore how leaders are differentiating their organizations when it comes to upskilling, digital capabilities, training and creating talent pipelines. How are C-suite executives—including the CFOs—collaborating to support employee wellbeing and ensure a smooth remote, hybrid, or full return to work experience? Join some of the smartest minds in finance who are helping to redefine work and future-proof their companies.

The program will feature an interview with Julie Sweet, Chief Executive Officer, Accenture; and KC McClure, Chief Financial Officer, Accenture, and be followed by a panel with CFOs including Tracey Doi of Toyota North America, Scott Herren of Cisco and Robynne Sisco of Workday.

The Critical Role of the CFO in the Post-pandemic World

At a pivot point like few others in our history, CFOs have played a critical role in leading their organizations through the immediate crisis posed by the global COVID-19 pandemic. But what comes next? In this interactive and engaging session we explored the opportunities and challenges facing CFOs in this unique moment for business: the oversight of accelerated digital transformations, risk assessment forecasting, managing stakeholder and ESG metrics, and the balance of short-term results with long-term growth. We also discussed the increasingly important partnership between CEOs and CFOs through conversation with former CFOs that now sit in the CEO chair.

The program featured:

  • Aneel Bhusri, Co-founder and Co-CEO, Workday
  • Adena Friedman, President and CEO, Nasdaq
  • Allen Parker, CFO, Zillow
  • Christina Spade, Executive Vice President and CFO, AMC Networks

The Promise and the Pressure of ESG Measures

Long-term success for any organization is increasingly tied to the company’s ability to prioritize environmental, social and governance (ESG) metrics. From climate change, pollution and water scarcity to #blacklivesmatter and the COVID-19 pandemic, the list of these issues that can present a challenge to a company is sizable. And many CFOs are finding that embracing ESG measures not only helps make their companies more sustainable, but also proves to be an avenue to attract new investors, and cut both borrowing costs and operating expenses. In this CFO Collaborative we'll explore the benefits of investing in ESG along with the new pressures that stakeholder capitalism places on the shoulders of CFOs.

The program featured Brian Moynihan, Chairman and CEO, Bank of America; and Robert R. Jackson Jr., Professor of Law, NYU School of Law; and  additional speakers to be announced.
