Problem you are trying to address with this feature

1. Allow users to change the colour of the highlight
2. Allow users to vary the opacity of the highlight
3. These settings are very private, and in groups, various users will see highlights in accordance with their settings

Your solution

There should be a provision conveniently located to change the colour and opacity of the highlight. When in groups, these settings are applicable to only the user who wants them that way. The other users will view the highlighted material in accordance with their own highlight settings.
