Pin a participant's video and adjust video layout in a Zoom meeting

On this page:

Overview

You can control the way videos display in Zoom. For example, you can keep a certain meeting participant's video on the screen, change video sizes, and hide non-video participants. These options are useful for keeping an ASL interpreter's video visible and well positioned during a Zoom meeting.

Pin a video

By default, Zoom will attempt to switch the main video to the participant that last spoke. To keep a participant's video from disappearing, pin it:

  1. Right-click the participant's video, or hover your cursor over the participant's video and click the three dots (...) that appear.
  2. From the menu that appears, choose Pin Video.

Video display modes

Use the appropriate video display mode below to make more room for videos and maximize screen space.

Try the gallery view to maximize the size of both the pinned video and the other active participants. To optimize the space for the videos you want to see, remove your self-view and remove participants who are not sharing video.

Switch to gallery view

When the option is available, click Gallery View in the upper right to enter gallery view.

Hide non-video participants

  1. Right-click any participant that either has video turned off or is dialed in by telephone; alternatively, hover your cursor over a participant's video and click the three dots (...) that appear.
  2. From the menu that appears, choose Hide Non-Video Participants to hide all users with video turned off.

Hide self-view

  1. Right-click your video, or hover your cursor over a participant's video and click the three dots (...) that appear.
  2. From the menu that appears, choose Hide Myself.

Use side-by-side mode to make more room for videos during screen sharing

During screen sharing, the pinned video may become smaller than desired. You can adjust the relative size between shared video content and the gallery view by switching to side-by-side mode:

  1. When viewing a shared screen, at the top, click View Options.
  2. From the menu that appears, choose Side-by-side Mode.
  3. The shared video content will be on the left. The participants will appear on the right. If desired, move the separator left or right to set the relative size of each.

For more, see Side-by-Side Mode for Screen Sharing.

Use full screen mode

To maximize the screen space in Zoom, use full screen mode. Hover the cursor over the Zoom window, and then click the button with four arrows that appears at the top right.

To exit full screen mode, hover the cursor over the Zoom window, and then click Exit Full Screen, or press Esc.

Keyboard shortcuts for controlling the view

The following keyboard shortcuts quickly adjust the view in Zoom. For a full list of keyboard shortcuts available in Zoom, see Hot Keys and Keyboard Shortcuts for Zoom.

Windows

  • Alt-F1: Switch to active speaker view
  • Alt-F2: Switch to gallery view
  • Alt-F: Enter or exit full screen mode
  • Esc: Exit full screen mode

macOS

  • Command-Shift-W: Toggle between active speaker view or gallery view
  • Command-Shift-F: Enter or exit full screen mode
  • Esc: Exit full screen mode

Use a second device or screen

Consider using a second device or screen. You can then maximize the Zoom meeting on one screen or device and display other content on the second screen at the same time.
