SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) – Colorado State Patrol said a driver that alluded to having explosives in the car was suffering a mental episode and it was all a “misunderstanding.”

Authorities shut down traffic on Interstate 70 at the Eisenhower Tunnel around 1:30 p.m. after receiving an emergency call about possible explosives in a car off the interstate just west of the tunnel. CSP said the 911 caller has a connection to the driver.

The incident was investigated on the westbound side of the highway outside the far end of the tunnel by troopers and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad.

CSP diverted traffic to Highway 6 over Loveland Pass as the alternate route.

After hours of investigation, JCSO bomb squad deemed the area as safe and the interstate was reopened around 5:20 p.m.

This is a developing story. Details will be reported as they are received.
