Bio Information:
Rebbe Yosef Greenwald, author of Vayechi Yosef and Veyaan Yosef, achieved world recognition as a young man, prior to WW II, as the head of a large yeshiva in the city of Satmar. When his father, Rebbe Yaakov Yechezkiya Greenwald, (1882-1941) the author of Vayaged Yaakov, passed away, the Rebbe was?chosen to succeed him. Rebbe Yaakov Yechezkiya was a son of Rebbe Moshe Greenwald, (1853-1911), the Chuster Rav and author of Arugas Habosem. The Rebbe and his yeshiva relocated to the city of Pupa.
During the Holocaust, his wife and nine children were murdered and the Jewish community of Pupa was destroyed. After WW II, he remarried and began restoring the glory of Pupa.
In the post Holocaust years, the Rebbe provided lodging and meals for hundreds of young men and reestablished his yeshiva. As both father and mother, the Pupa Rebbe arranged sustenance and marriages for his orphaned students.
In 1950 the Rebbe settled in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn and began his congregation and yeshiva anew.

His father’s name was R’ Yaakov Yechezkiah (not Yechezkel).
Is he the brother of Rav Levi Yitzchak Greenwald ZT”L buried in Wellwood Cemetery?

Are you reading the text on these Matzirvos, how could he possibly be a brother when it is clear that he was a grandson of the Arugas Habosem?
I thought it said he was the son of the Arugas Habosem.
i remember the pupa ruv he was one of the bigest poskim and marbitz torah in the dor with an unbelievable masires nefesh to klal yisruel, people are being mispalel all year round in kiryas pupa its a big place for all yeshiyes
We came to America after WW II alone and the Pupa Ruv was like a father to us. He told us not to worry and that he was going to take care of me and my two sisters with everything, learning in hemisha schools, sidichim,est. I will never forget the ahaves yisroel he displayed. Since the Ruv’s passing my brother in law and I daven for the umid and say kadish on the day of his yarziet.
yhida, the story you write sound interesting. Can you please elaborate? The Rebbe indeed has a “beis yesomim” after WWII, but it was in Europe (mainly in Antwerp, Belgium) until 1951 when he came to the USA.
Also, your saying kaddish etc on the yarziet might leave an impression that he was childless. He was b”H not. His children and grandchildren lead nice chasidishe kehilos and mosdos to this day.

Rabbi Joseph Grunwald Dead at 81
NEW YORK, Aug. 13 (JTA) –
Thousands of disciples attended final rites yesterday for Rabbi Joseph Grunwald, a Holocaust survivor who died Saturday at a Westchester medical center at the age of 81, after suffering a stroke.
Grunwald was president of the Rabbinical Congress of the United States and Canada in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, a center of the Satmar Hasidic movement. But a source there told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that while Grunwald had served as president of the Congress, he was in fact founder and head of the Pupa Hasidic movement which he bult into a worldwide movement of some 100,000 members, and not a Satmar Hasid.
Some 2,000 mourners gathered outside the rabbi’s home in Brooklyn early yesterday. A spokesperson for the Yeshivath Kehilath Yakov sect, also called the Pupa Hasidim after a town in Hungary with which the Grunwalds had historically been associated, said thousand of mourners had paid their last respects to Grunwald.
He survived a death camp where his wife and 10 children perished. He emigrated from Pupa after World War II, coming to the United States where he created orphanages and schools for other refugees from Pupa. His son Jacob is expected, in the dynastic manner of Hasidic groups, to succeed him as Pupa Rebbe.

The Rebbes Kever (Tzion) is located at the site of the Pupa Yeshiva in Westchester County, New York that the Rebbe founded in the last year of his life. It should be noted to visitors planning to visit this holy kever that there is Minyan on site since there is a Yeshiva Gedola and Yeshiva Ketane there. There is always a Minyan 3 times daily while the Yeshiva is in session.
