Using a Browser Extension

Lean Library Access offers quick and easy access to licensed library resources by automatically detecting when you come across a resource, ebook, or article online that the library has a subscription for.

The browser extension is freely available for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, and Safari on desktops and laptops, as well as through an iOS app.

If you are using an unsupported browser or mobile device, try the Proxy Server Bookmarklet instead.

Download and install Lean Library Access

  1. Visit the Lean Library Access website to download and install the extension, or get the Academic Browser app for Apple mobile devices.
  2. Choose the University of Michigan from the list of institutions and select “save.”

Using the extension

If you are on a campus network, Lean Library Access should work automatically once installed. The extension icon in your browser toolbar will turn green if the library provides access

If you’re remote or not on a campus network, you may be prompted to log in with U-M credentials.

When content is not detected as available through the library, the extension will automatically check for open access versions or provide a link to interlibrary loan so you can request it.
