Library exhibits enhance the learning environment and seek to inform, engage and educate the university community and visitors to MacOdrum Library. We welcome proposals for exhibits from members of the university community and outside organizations provided that they are in keeping with the goals and criteria stated below.

Goals

  • Promote the library’s collections, resources and services and to recognize and celebrate literary, scholarly and cultural figures or events

  • Highlight the scholarly and creative accomplishments of the university community and promote Carleton's teaching and research activities

  • Compliment campus programs and events such as conferences and symposia

  • Engage in collaborative projects with members of the university community

  • Recognize library donors and supporters

Criteria

The library reserves the right to approve proposals or suggestions for exhibits, and to make all decisions about installation, publicity, duration and timing, lay-out and content of exhibits which comply with the criteria below.

  • Topics for exhibits should be related to the scholarly purpose or objectives of the university and should be educational in nature

  • Exhibits should be relevant to the library’s role in supporting the teaching and research activities of the university; research must be thorough and accurate

  • Exhibits should be installed with the minimum of effort and at no cost to the library

  • Exhibits must be appropriate for a wide audience which may include the general public and children

  • Exhibits primarily for promotional or commercial purposes are not acceptable

MacOdrum Library has a number of exhibit locations including display cases and wall spaces. Please contact one of the Exhibit co-chairs for details.

Exhibit Proposal Process

Introduce yourself, include a brief description of the contents, a suggested timeline and send to our exhibit co-chairs at right (George & Linnet)

Security and Insurance

The Library will ensure that materials on loan for exhibit purposes are provided with security and environmental conditions equivalent to those accorded our own collections. The library cannot accept responsibility for the security of exhibits or loss or damage to materials at any time including during transportation, installation and dismantling, no matter how caused. Any insurance coverage, if needed, is the responsibility of the sponsor of a proposed exhibit.

Complaints or Comments

Carleton University Library supports academic freedom and the freedom of expression. The library subscribes to the Canadian Library Association Position statement on Intellectual Freedom. The Library will not censor or remove an exhibit because some members of the community may disagree with its content.

Complaints related to an exhibit may be sent in writing to the Assistant University Librarian for Community Outreach and Academic Staff Relations.
