Remote Services
Online collection
To access our extensive online collections start at our home page, or, if you are used to going to your favorite licensed resources directly, use Passkey to get through the paywalls.
Virtual browsing
If you want to browse items that are shelved together because they share a topic, you can use the new 'virtual browse' feature of the library catalog on the vast majority of our holdings. When displaying an item of interest, scroll down to browse similar volumes across our libraries, as well as most similar digital items. Or, for a text-based alternative, you can try the call number browse feature.
When you find promising titles that do not have table of content information in the catalog yet, you can request scans of tables of contents or of specific sections to help you determine which are most likely to be relevant before making a contactless pickup request. More information.
Scans via email
Scanning is available from the circulating collections of all of our libraries as well as Olin Library's map collection, and the rare and distinctive collections held at the Kheel Center, Mann Library, and the Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections. Articles and chapters can be requested for electronic delivery.
Course reserves
The Library’s course reserves service is in an online, accessible environment to the fullest degree possible, while remaining responsive to instructor needs. See information on physical course reserves under on-site services.
Print purchase and delivery
In case of urgent teaching needs, Cornell instructors can use our emergency print purchase and delivery service. If there is no electronic version available of a requested book and you are unable to come to campus to retrieve a print copy, we will attempt to purchase it in print and have it shipped directly from the vendor to the home address of the instructor.
Virtual research help
We continue to offer research help via e-mail or chat and in-depth consultations via Zoom.
Virtual instruction
Librarians are available to teach online. We can work with instructors to integrate library research into your online class and help you think through redesigning your research assignments in the online environment. Contact your instruction coordinator or library liaison and consult our guide about the Library’s Support for Remote Teaching.
Rare and distinctive collections
Scanning requests are being filled in the Kheel Center, Mann Library, and the Rare and Manuscript Collections (RMC), for students, faculty, and staff. View your item in the library catalog and click “Request Item for Scanning.” Email questions to the Kheel Center, Mann Library, and RMC. Or contact us with RMC reproduction requests.
Remote access to specialized software
We provide remote access to select applications such as ArcGIS and Rhino as well as facilitate remote access to Bloomberg. More information at Apps on Demand.

Returning Library Materials
Returning Cornell University Library, Borrow Direct, or Interlibrary Loan materials
The Library has eliminated late fees (except for items that have been recalled by another patron.) Billing for lost item replacement fees has resumed.
If at all possible, return library materials in person. The book return slot to the left of Olin Library's entrance is open and so are the drop boxes at the Africana Library, the Library Annex, Catherwood Library, Fine Arts Library, Law Library, Mathematics Library, Mann Library, Music Library, Uris Library, and the Veterinary Library. Email the Library Public Services office for special arrangements if you need to keep the items longer or have a large number of items to return. If you are not returning to campus, please contact the Library Public Services office to discuss options for mailing the items back to us.
