Duke University Libraries are committed to providing a safe and secure learning environment for library users, who include: Duke University students, faculty and staff, Triangle Research Libraries Network affiliates, visiting researchers and members of the general public. The library uses high-tech security systems such as video surveillance and building alarm systems in cooperation with law enforcement and emergency services to protect library personnel, patrons and assets. Full-time security personnel and library staff are available to assist library users with issues related to safety, security and library policies.
Library users should not leave personal belongings unattended. This includes personal laptops and other electronic devices. Duke University Libraries cannot be responsible for lost, stolen or misplaced items.
Library users are expected to understand and comply with the Libraries’ policy for user rights and responsibilities. Anyone engaging in disruptive or inappropriate behavior or found in restricted areas may be referred to Duke University Police and may be denied further access to the Libraries.
This policy statement covers Perkins Library, Bostock Library, Rubenstein Library, Lilly Library, and the Music Library. These libraries are generally open to the public from 8 AM or the hour at which they open, whichever is later, until 7 PM or the hour at which they close, whichever is earlier. If a library remains open after 7 PM, the doors automatically lock and only authorized Duke Card holders are allowed to access the libraries via card swipe devices mounted at the entrance doors. Individuals accessing the Libraries during these times should do so with their own Duke ID card.
