Summary Practitioners, researchers, academics and the general population have developed a common understanding that sports medicine is not exclusive to a single profession. The field of sports medicine has been defined in the literature as a variety of professions contributing to the prevention and care of sports enthusiasts - from recreational participants to elite athletes. Sports medicine in Australia and internationally evolved as health sciences and medicine professionals contribute to defining the broad field of sports medicine. The literature investigating change in the sport environment has focused primarily on sports organisations in Canada and Europe. Although these studies have added to our understanding of change in sports organisations, they are limited in investigations of multidisciplinary organisations and organisations in the sports medicine environment. The purpose of this study is two-fold. First this study explores historical activities, characteristics, and processes of change in health sciences professionals, as members of the Australian Sports Medicine Federation (ASMF), as they evolve through constructing disciplines of sports medicine. Secondly, this study explores the historical activities, characteristics and processes of change in the ASMF constructing a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach to their organisational context. A case study approach incorporating qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection was adopted for this study. The analysis of the qualitative data was through the identification of themes in relation to the research question, while the quantitative method of a survey questionnaire was constructed from the themes generated in the qualitative data, and analysed through descriptive statistics. The qualitative data was obtained from interviews and from the ASMF documents, and presented under the case perspectives, crafting disciplines in sports medicine and changes in the ASMF.
The results indicate that health sciences members of the ASMF illustrated historical activities and characteristics that lead to defining disciplines and professional fields of sports medicine. The processes of change of health sciences professionals into disciplines of sports medicine were influenced by forces driving the need for change, and responded to by implementation of change activities. The findings of this study also indicate that the ASMF evolved through historical activities and characteristics defining multidisciplinary, inter-disciplinary and organisational field constructs. The ASMF was influenced by forces driving change to construct a multidisciplinary approach to their membership, and responded through implementing change in their organisational activities. The ASMF was also faced with forces driving change in terms of expanding the multidisciplinary approach through inter-disciplinary activities and organisational structures. This study contributes to the change management literature by describing historical activities and characteristics of health sciences members of the ASMF. It adds to the literature of forces driving change, transformation, shift, strategic change, planned change and emergent change. It also contributes to the literature defining disciplines, multidisciplinary and inter-disciplinary. The findings also provide contributions to the literature describing characteristics of a professional field and an organisational field.
