Ana Kutnow

Ana Kutnow was no stranger to libraries growing up, so her position as a student employee in circulation seems to be a natural fit. Kutnow was recently selected as a recipient of the 2021 University Libraries Student Employee Scholarship, which recognizes exceptional work by student employees. We interviewed her to learn more about why she excels in her position and how the scholarship will shape her time as a student at The Ohio State University.

Tell us a bit about yourself!

I'm Ana Kutnow. I'm a first-year student majoring in environment, economy, development and sustainability (EEDS) and am planning to minor in sustainable agriculture.

What initially drew you to working with University Libraries as a student employee?

Growing up I was always at a library; I enjoy reading and always have. I also grew up in Columbus and my dad has worked near Ohio State’s campus. We had visited Thompson Library before I even thought about attending Ohio State. The library position felt like a low-key environment and somewhere I would find enjoyable to work, and I have found that to be the case.

What is something you’ve learned by working for University Libraries?

Something I've learned working here is that I enjoy answering people's questions and helping them solve problems. I work at the circulation desk, so I get to interact with students and professors of all ages, as well as visiting families and individuals. I really enjoy helping people solve their issues, whether it's finding a book, printing-related or something else.

How will this scholarship impact your time as a student at Ohio State?

This scholarship is going to be extremely helpful to me during my time here. It not only alleviates the heavy weight of student loan debt, but it will also allow me to focus more of my time on things such as research and other opportunities my major offers me.

What would you say to other students who are considering working for University Libraries?

If you are someone considering working for University Libraries, I say do it! The environment is very laid-back and quieter than a lot of jobs, and the people that work here have all been fantastic in my experience. You get to interact with lots of different types of people. I've had a fantastic experience so far and will likely keep working here for quite a while.
