I am an Assistant Professor at the University of Washington Information School. I am also Adjunct in Computer Science & Engineering and a Visiting Scientist at the Allen Institute for AI (AI2). I am recruiting PhD students to start Fall 2023; prospective PhD students please refer to the iSchool admissions page for information on how to apply. Students at all levels (PhD, Masters, Undergraduate) who are starting or already at the UW and who are interested in conducting research during the 2022-23 school year, please contact me to discuss opportunities. Note: a lab website is in the works.
My research uses natural language processing and data science techniques to make sense of scientific and research output. Specifically, I investigate NLP methods for understanding biomedical text, systems to help us make better and more data-driven care decisions, as well as how text analysis techniques can be used to identify trends in research communication.
I was previously a Young Investigator at the Allen Institute for AI in the Semantic Scholar research group. I completed my PhD in the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education (BIME) at the University of Washington and also hold degrees in Biomedical Engineering and Physics from Johns Hopkins and MIT respectively.
I live in Seattle. In my spare time, I enjoy cycling and hiking, foraging for mushrooms, playing go (weiqi), and working on miscellaneous projects. See photos from my latest exploits.
