Air Conditioning Equipment: Imports Fall 15%

From January to June 2020, companies in the region bought air conditioning equipment abroad for $78 million, 15% less than in the same period in 2019, a decrease that can be explained by the behavior of purchases in Panama, Guatemala and Honduras.

Costa Rica and Honduras, Main Importers
During the first six months of the year the main buyers of air conditioning equipment in Central America were Costa Rica and Honduras, with $21 million and $17 million respectively, followed by Panama with $16 million, El Salvador with $10 million, Guatemala with $9 million and Nicaragua with $6 million.

In the case of the year-on-year variation in purchases, for the period in question El Salvador registered a 40% increase, followed by Nicaragua with 20% and Costa Rica with 3%. Honduras reported an 11% drop in its imports, Guatemala reported a 21% drop, and in Panama purchases fell by 46%.

Variation in Regional Imports
Between January and June 2019 and the same period in 2020, the value imported registered a drop of 15%, from $92 million to $78 million.

In contrast to the general behavior of imports, for the periods in question purchases from China went from $36 million to $40 million.

Origin of Imports
During the first six months of 2020, 52% of the value imported from Central America came from China, 23% from the US, 3% from South Korea, 3% from Mexico and 2% from Thailand.

China is the country of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most for the period analyzed in the last eight years, since in 2012 it represented 21% of the total value purchased and in 2020 it rose to 52%.

This analysis was carried out considering machines and air conditioning equipment suitable for modifying temperatures and humidity that can be adjusted to walls, windows, floors or ceilings, vehicles, and the respective parts of the equipment.
