Cement: China Still Taking Over the Regional Market

During the first quarter of 2021, China was the largest supplier of hydraulic cement in the region with 35.92% of the market, followed by the United States of America with 19.83%, Russia 18.68% and Colombia 14.52%.

Imports by Country
During the first quarter of 2021 the main importer of hydraulic cements in Central America was El Salvador with $0.7 million, followed by Guatemala with $0.4 million, Costa Rica and Nicaragua with $0.1 million.

Change in Regional Imports
Between the first quarter of 2020 and 2021, the value imported into the region decreased by 98.9%, from $18.2 million to $0.2 million.

Origin of Imports
During the first quarter of 2021, 35.92% of the value purchased came from China, 19.83% from the United States of America, 18.68% from Russia, 14.52% from Colombia, 7.16% from El Salvador and 1.87% from Germany.

China is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most in the last nine years, given that in 2012 no significant purchases were reported and for the first quarter it accounted for the largest percentage of the total imported by the region.

In the first quarter of 2019, the countries of the region imported 31,943 tons of candies, chocolates and other cocoa-based preparations, a volume 6% higher than that reported during the same period in 2018.

More Chinese Cement in Central America
January 2019
During the first six months of 2018, Central American companies imported hydraulic cement for $77 million, and purchases from China increased 42% over the same period in 2017.

September 2018
In the first three months of 2018, countries in Central America imported $36 million worth of hydraulic cement, 9% more than was purchased in the same period in 2017.
