Corn: Purchases up 5% in 2020

During 2020, companies in the region bought corn abroad for $998 million, 5% more than what was reported in 2019, a variation that is explained by the increase in imports from Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and Costa Rica.

Central American Companies Buy More
Between 2019 and 2020 the total imported value of corn in Central America registered a 5% increase by rising from $952 million to $998 million.

As for the volume imported, this also reported a rise, in this case from 4.54 million tons to 4.79 million tons, equivalent to a variation of 6%.

Import Prices
In recent years, the price has shown a downward trend, with a decrease of 37% for the period from October 2012 to December 2020, falling from $0.35 per kilo to $0.22 per kilo.

Imports by Country
Last year, the main buyer of corn imports in Central America continued to be Guatemala with $307 million, followed by Costa Rica with $194 million, El Salvador with $159 million, Honduras with $158 million, Panama with $107 million and Nicaragua with $84 million.

In 2020, imports in Nicaragua increased 44% year-on-year, in Guatemala 9%, in Honduras 9%, in Panama 2% and in Costa Rica 1%. In the case of El Salvador, foreign purchases decreased 6%.

USA, Main Corn Supplier
Last year, 87% of foreign purchases by Central American companies were made from the USA, 6% from Mexico, 5% from Brazil, 1% from Argentina and 1% from Thailand.

For the months under analysis in recent years, purchases from Mexican companies have gained ground, as in 2012 they represented 3% of total regional imports and in 2020 that proportion rose to 6%.

Corn imports from the countries of the region reached $168 million between January and March of this year, 6% more than what was reported in the same period of 2017.

Price of Imported Corn Drops 56%
April 2018
Between February 2013 and December 2017, the average price of a kilo of corn imported into Guatemala has been on a downward path, falling from $0.43 to $0.19.
