Glass: Purchases in Q3 of 2021 on Rise

During the third quarter of 2021 there was a recovery in purchases of glass and its manufactures by the Central American region, reaching $269 million, with Guatemala being the main importer with $47 million.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
From January to September 2021 the main importer in Central America was Guatemala with $47 million, followed by Costa Rica with $46 million, El Salvador with $29 million, Honduras with $25 million, Panama with $23 million and Nicaragua with $12 million.

During the third quarter of the year, Central American countries increased their purchases, reporting a year-on-year increase as follows: Guatemala recorded a positive variation of 78%, Honduras 71%, Nicaragua 47%, El Salvador 39%, Panama 38% and Costa Rica 17%.

China, Main Supplier
For the third quarter of 2021, 32% of the value imported from Central America came from China, 13% from Guatemala, 12% from the USA, 11% from Costa Rica, Mexico with 9% and Malaysia with 3%.

China is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most for the period in question in recent years, since in 2012 it represented 17% of the total value imported by the region and in the third quarter of 2021 it reached 32%.

Variation in Regional Business
Between January to September 2020 and the same period of 2021 the imported volume of glass and its manufactures registered an increase of 32%, going from 220,315 tons to 291,435 tons.

Also for the periods in question the imported value recorded an increase of 53%, from $175 million to $269 million.
