Tractors: Purchases Recovered at the End of 2020

After in May of last year in the context of the pandemic, regional purchases of tractors fell to a historic low at $4 million, in the following months imports showed a recovery and in December amounted to $20 million.

Imports by Market
During 2020 the main buyer of tractors in Central America was Guatemala, with $42 million, followed by Costa Rica and Honduras, with $16 million each, Panama and El Salvador, with $13 million each, and Nicaragua, with $9 million.

Last year, Nicaragua and Guatemala were the only countries in the region that reported increases in their foreign purchases, registering 39% and 7% year-on-year variations.

Costa Rican companies reduced their imports by 17%, Salvadoran companies by 19%, Panamanian companies by 42% and Honduran companies by 47%.

U.S. and Mexico, Main Suppliers to the Regional Market
Last year, 45% of the value of imports from Central America came from the USA, 22% from Mexico, 14% from Brazil, 3% from China, 2% from India, 2% from Canada and 2% from Italy.

In terms of imported value, tractors from Italy have lost share in regional purchases, as in 2013 they accounted for 9% of the total traded and in 2020 the proportion fell to 2%.

Change in Regional Imports
Between 2019 and 2020 the value imported in the region decreased 18%, going from $133 million to $109 million.

For the years in question purchases from the U.S. fell from $62 million to $49 million, and in the case of business with companies in Mexico decreased from $31 million to $24 million.
