Vaccine Tourism Boosts Ticket Sales
Thursday, June 10, 2021
In order to have access to the vaccine against Covid-19, the number of people traveling abroad by air has increased in Guatemala in the last months, being the United States the main destination to which Guatemalans travel.
Data from the Guatemalan Institute of Migration (IGM) show that in the fifth month of the year there was an increase in the number of people who decided to travel abroad, most of them in search of access to the vaccine against the coronavirus.

Only in May 2021, 51,712 people left the country, 39% more than in the previous month. Of the total number of travelers registered in May, 40,100 went to the United States.

Motty Rodas, executive director of the Guatemalan Airline Association (Agla), told Prensalibre.com that "... the trend is expected to continue until the group of Guatemalans who have the purchasing power to travel abroad for vaccinations have done so."

Maria Casasola, manager of the travel agency Happy Travel, said that "... to the U.S. the routes with the greatest affluence or demand are the airports of Miami, Dallas, Houston and New York. There are several packages whose prices vary, depending on the number of travelers and the city they are going to. These packages include travel insurance, logistics, car rental and hotel-airport transfers."

The travel agency is not in charge of making the appointment at the vaccination center; it is the passenger's responsibility, the manager added.
